Mefarshim Exploration and Presentation Activity by Alyssa Greenberg
FOR WHOM: Enrichment for students who benefit from independent work that leaves room for personal choice and creativity. Typically these students need to be challenged to feel accomplished and productive and want the challenging work.
WHAT: Students are given a particular Pasuk/topic, and students search for mefarshim that deepen their understanding of the topic. The teacher then approves their choices before the student proceeds.
Students then create a presentation (Slides, Prezi) that explains the Mefarshim to the class, connecting to what the class as a whole is learning, and how it strengthens their understanding of the text. The class has the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion.
STRUCTURAL OPTIONS:
Teacher monitors which mefarshim (English/Hebrew, length, prior familiarity) the students choose and encourage them to go outside their comfort zone.
Students do research on the new Parshan they are learning and present a short bio on his life and works.
Students create a diagram or poster with the different opinions and ideas that stem from the Pasuk.
WHEN: Either alongside the class’s on-level work or as an anchor project during the times when the student feels unchallenged.
