... אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא כל העוסק בתורה ובגמילות חסדים ומתפלל עם הצבור מעלה אני עליו כאילו פדאני לי ולבני מבין אומות העולם
...The Holy One, Blessed be He, says: Anyone who engages in Torah study and in acts of kindness, and prays with the congregation, I ascribe to him credit as if he redeemed Me and My children from among the nations of the world.
(א) כי האמנם. הה"א פתוחה כי היא לתימה כלומר באמת היא שישב אלקים עם האדם בארץ זה לא יתכן להאמין כי אתה תתברך ותתעלה על הכל אין לך מקום שיכילך כי אתה מקום העולם ואין העולם מקומך אם כן מה שבניתי הבית לך אינו אלא על דרך משל שיהיה רצונך וכבודך נמצא בבית הזה לשמוע אל התפלה אשר יתפללו במקום הזה ואע"פ שבכל המקומות היא רצונו אל הצועק אליו בלב שלם לשמוע אל תפלתו בקש שלמה מהא-ל שיהיה המקום הזה הנבחר מסייע המתפלל בתפלתו כאילו הבית הזה היה מלאך מליץ ותשמע תפלת כל המתפלל בבית הזה בקרוב יותר משיתפלל במקום אחר:
...For surely how could it be...The grammar expresses confusion as if to say, "Is it true that God might settle with humans on this earth? This couldn't be believed, for You who are blessed and elevated above all - there is no place that can contain You, for You are the place of the world and the world is not a place for You. If so, my building up this house for You is just by way of parable, that Your will and glory will be found in this house to listen to the prayer that will be prayed in this place." And even though God's will is in all places for one who cried out to Him with a whole heart to listen to his prayer, Shlomo sought from God that this place might be chosen to assist the person praying in his prayer, as if this house were an angelic advocate and the prayer of all who prayed in this house would be closer than if one prayed elsewhere.
(ח) יכול יתפלל כל היום כולו כבר פירש דניאל (דנייאל ו) וזמנין תלתא ביומא הוה ברך על ברכוהי יכול יתפלל לכל רוח שירצה ת"ל (שם) וכוין פתיחן ליה בעיליתיה נגד ירושלם יכול משבא לגולה הוחל ת"ל (שם) כל קבל דהוה עביד מן קדמת דנא.
(8) One might have thought that a person can pray [Shemoneh Esreh] all day long. [However] it already explained in Daniel, “… and three times a day he prayed on his knees …” (Daniel 6:11) One might have thought that [a person] can pray facing any direction. [However] the verse teaches us, “… where in the attic he had windows facing Yerushalayim …” (ibid.) One might have thought that [Daniel] only began to pray after he was exiled. [However] the verse teaches us, “… just as he had always done before then.” (ibid.)
(יחזקאל יא, טז) ואהי להם למקדש מעט אמר רבי יצחק אלו בתי כנסיות ובתי מדרשות שבבבל ור"א אמר זה בית רבינו שבבבל...דרש רבא מאי דכתיב (תהלים צ, א) ה' מעון אתה היית לנו אלו בתי כנסיות ובתי מדרשות אמר אביי מריש הואי גריסנא בביתא ומצלינא בבי כנשתא כיון דשמעית להא דקאמר דוד (תהלים כו, ח) ה' אהבתי מעון ביתך הואי גריסנא בבי כנישתא
“Yet I have been to them as a little sanctuary [in the countries where they have come]” (Ezekiel 11:16). Rabbi Yitzḥak said: This is referring to the synagogues and study halls in Babylonia. And Rabbi Elazar said: This is referring to the house of our master, [i.e., Rav,] in Babylonia...Rava expounded: What is the meaning of the verse: “God, You have been our dwelling place [in all generations]” (Psalms 90:1)? This is the synagogues and study halls. Abaye said: At first, I used to study at home and pray in the synagogue. Once I listened to that which David says: “Lord, I love the habitation of Your house” (Psalms 26:8), I would study Torah in the synagogue...
(ה) - את בתי התפלות שלנו נקרא בלשון אשכנז בשם "שולען" (בתי ספר) ובאמת עליהם להיות בתי ־ספר בעד אנשים מגודלים אשר הליכות עולם למו בחיים.
(5) "Shools," that is, schools, we call our houses of worship in the Ashkenazi language, and that is what they should be, schools for the grown-up, for those who have long since exchanged the tasks of the schoolmaster for the problems of life.

Haftarah = finishing part - A section of the prophets read to complement the torah reading on sabbaths and holidays

Hazan = cantor - A formally trained singer and prayer leader
Heder = room - A school for children
Kipah = skullcap - Traditional headcovering for Jews
Maftir = finishing - The last aliyah of the Torah readings on sabbaths or holidays
Mahzor = review - A siddur containing the complete set of materials relating to a particular holiday
Mehitzah = divider - A partition dividing the women's area from the men's area in traditional shuls
Menorah = candelabra - A decorative element in imitation of the menorah in the Beit ha-Miqdash
Minyan = numbering - Minimum number of participants necessary for public prayer
Mizrakh = east - Eastern wall of synagogue, usually where the aron is located and where the participants are oriented when they stand in prayer
Ner tamid = permanent light - A light constantly burning in the synagogue
Parochet = curtain - A decorative curtain covering the aron
Parshat ha-shavu'a = section of the week - Section of the torah designated for the week, read in part on Mondays and Thursdays, and completely on sabbaths
Qriyah = reading - Act of reading from the Torah
Sedrah = order - Section of the torah designated for the week
Shliah Tzibur = Agent of the congregation - Leader of the prayers in public prayer, may or may not be a hazan
Shtender = podium (Yiddish) - A small stand used by the rabbi
