Moshe Cordovero on the difference between עלה (“cause”) and סבה (“reason”)

See, I always imagined that if [these] words are equivalent, why do I have עלת העלות and why do I have [also] סבת הסבות? And see, this repetitive expression shows me that there is a difference between עלה and סבה, as עלה teaches proximity to what is acted by Him, and סבה, its meaning is remoteness, that that which is being surrounded happens by way of surrounding, not by way of proximity. And the subject [is] that the word עלה is derived from the expression “and deal/עולל with them as You have dealt/עוללת with me” [Lamentations 1:22], which is an expression of action, [but] in truth סבה is from the expression “I have surrounded/סבותי all life of the house of your father” [I Samuel 22:22; commentators have found it difficult to establish the exact meaning of סבותי in this verse], and [that it is] as the subject of surrounding, of which we see that this subject does not occur except on multiple surrounding,
and truly this will say that [Heit is] not only עלת העלות, which are the near ones [= causes], but also סבת הסבות, which teaches that also the remote ones [= causes] which have come from the aspect of surrounding, many subjects, they also are connected with Him, as if to say: entities that are worked ánd entities that are surrounded, near entities ánd far entities, they or what is extended from them.
