Bereshit Haftarah text study
Questions to consider:
  • How is the prophet reinterpreting the original Torah stories? To what end?
  • What are we bringing to the text as a modern reader? How does this change our understanding of the text?
  • What does the prophet have to say to us today?

(5) Thus said the ETERNAL God,

Who created the heavens and stretched them out,

Who spread out the earth and what it brings forth,

Who gave breath to the people upon it

And life to those who walk thereon:

At the beginning of God’s creating
of the heavens and the earth —now the earth was Confusion and Chaos,
darkness over the face of Ocean,
rushing-spirit of God soaring over the waters— God said: Let there be light! And there was light.

“The task is not to create the world, but to complete it.”
- Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch
  • What does it mean to create? When is creation completed?

(6) I GOD, in My grace, have summoned you,

And I have grasped you by the hand.

I created you, and appointed you

A covenant people, a light of nations—

(7) Opening eyes deprived of light,

Rescuing prisoners from confinement,

From the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

(ד) וַיַּ֧רְא אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־הָא֖וֹר כִּי־ט֑וֹב וַיַּבְדֵּ֣ל אֱלֹהִ֔ים בֵּ֥ין הָא֖וֹר וּבֵ֥ין הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ (ה) וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ לָאוֹר֙ י֔וֹם וְלַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ קָ֣רָא לָ֑יְלָה וַֽיְהִי־עֶ֥רֶב וַֽיְהִי־בֹ֖קֶר י֥וֹם אֶחָֽד׃ {פ}

(4) God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. (5) God called the light Day and called the darkness Night. And there was evening and there was morning, a first day.

“Hope is like light: it does not eliminate darkness, but it shows us where to step.”
- Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
  • Is light good or bad? Why or why not?

(24)Who was it gave Jacob over to despoilment

And Israel to plunderers?

Surely, GOD—against whom they sinned,

In whose ways they would not walk,

And whose Teaching they would not obey—

(25)Who poured out wrath,

Anger, and the fury of war upon them.

It blazed upon them all about, but they heeded not;

It burned among them, but they gave it no thought.

(1)But now thus said GOD

Who created you, O Jacob,

Who formed you, O Israel:

Fear not, for I will redeem you...

וּלְאָדָ֣ם אָמַ֗ר כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֘עְתָּ֮ לְק֣וֹל אִשְׁתֶּ֒ךָ֒ וַתֹּ֙אכַל֙ מִן־הָעֵ֔ץ אֲשֶׁ֤ר צִוִּיתִ֙יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹ֥א תֹאכַ֖ל מִמֶּ֑נּוּ אֲרוּרָ֤ה הָֽאֲדָמָה֙ בַּֽעֲבוּרֶ֔ךָ בְּעִצָּבוֹן֙ תֹּֽאכְלֶ֔נָּה כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֥י חַיֶּֽיךָ׃ וְק֥וֹץ וְדַרְדַּ֖ר תַּצְמִ֣יחַֽ לָ֑ךְ וְאָכַלְתָּ֖ אֶת־עֵ֥שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ בְּזֵעַ֤ת אַפֶּ֙יךָ֙ תֹּ֣אכַל לֶ֔חֶם עַ֤ד שֽׁוּבְךָ֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה כִּ֥י מִמֶּ֖נָּה לֻקָּ֑חְתָּ כִּֽי־עָפָ֣ר אַ֔תָּה וְאֶל־עָפָ֖ר תָּשֽׁוּב׃... וַיַּ֩עַשׂ֩ יהוה אֱלֹהִ֜ים לְאָדָ֧ם וּלְאִשְׁתּ֛וֹ כׇּתְנ֥וֹת ע֖וֹר וַיַּלְבִּשֵֽׁם׃ {פ}

To Adam he said:
Because you hearkened to the voice of your wife
and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, saying:
You are not to eat from it!
Cursed be the ground on your account;
with painstaking-labor shall you eat from it, all the days of your life. Thorn and stink-shrub let it spring up for you,
when you [wish to] eat the plants of the field! By the sweat of your nostrils shall you eat bread,
until you return to the ground,
for from it you were taken.
For you are dust, and to dust shall you return...

YHWH God made Adam and his wife coats of skins, and he clothed them.

"Every fall is a chance to rise higher."
- Rebbe Nachman of Breslov
  • What is the relationship between transgression and forgiveness? Is forgiveness inevitable?

(1)... I have singled you out by name,

You are Mine.

So YHWH God formed from the ground all the wildlife of the field and all the birds of the heavens and brought [each] to the human, to see what he would call it; and whatever the human called it as a living being, that became its name. The human called out names for all the herd-animals and for the birds of the heavens and for all the wildlife of the field...

(20) The Human named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.

"To be called by name is to be seen, to be known, to belong."
- Brené Brown
What is the connection between naming and relationship/ responsibility?
