(1) These are the laws and rules that you must carefully observe in the land that Adonai, God of your ancestors, is giving you to possess, as long as you live on earth. (2) You must destroy all the sites at which the nations you are to dispossess worshiped their gods, whether on lofty mountains and on hills or under any luxuriant tree. (3) Tear down their altars, smash their pillars, put their sacred posts to the fire, and cut down the images of their gods, obliterating their name from that site. (4) Do not worship your God Adonai in like manner, (5) but look only to the site that your God Adonai will choose amidst all your tribes as God’s habitation, to establish the divine name there. There you are to go, (6) and there you are to bring your burnt offerings and other sacrifices, your tithes and contributions, your votive and freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and flocks.

AFTER GOD'S RESIDENCE SHALL YE INQUIRE — This refers to the Tabernacle at Shiloh. (Sifrei Devarim 62:3)

TO PUT GOD'S NAME THERE. Compare, Where I cause My name to be mentioned (Ex. 20:21).

(21) Make for Me an altar of earth and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your sacrifices of well-being, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be mentioned I will come to you and bless you.

כי אם אל המקום אשר יבחר, “except at a place of God's choosing.” Moses did not spell out the name of that place, seeing that at different times God’s Presence decides to accept homage at different locations. [but never at more than one place at a given time. Ed.]

And it is taught in anotherbaraita: “So you shall bless the children of Israel” means the blessing should be recited with the ineffable name. Do you say that the Priestly Benediction must be recited with the ineffable name, or perhaps it is recited with only the substitute name, Adonai? The verse states: “So shall they put My name” (Numbers 6:27), which means My name that is unique to Me. One might have thought that even in the outlying areas, outside the Temple, this ineffable name is used. It is stated here, with regard to the Priestly Benediction: “So shall they put My name,” and it is stated there, with regard to the place one must sacrifice offerings: “The place that Adonai your God has chosen out of all your tribes to put God's name there” (Deuteronomy 12:5). The verbal analogy teaches that just as there, the expression “to put God's name there” is referring to the Temple, so too here, the mitzva of “so shall they put My name” applies in the Temple and not anywhere else.

This refers to the Tabernacle at Shiloh. I.e., do not seek God's Presence anywhere [you wish], because private altars are forbidden. It seems that Rashi’s inference is based on the apparently extra word לשכנו (God's Presence). For it would suffice to say, “Rather at the place ... to set God's Presence there.” Rather, the verse is referring to two places — Jerusalem and Shiloh. Re”m’s explanation is difficult to understand (Nachalas Yaakov).

לשכנו, the place where His Name will have a permanent residence, during the early period at Shiloh, later on in Jerusalem, Solomon’s Temple, better known as בית עולמים, the permanent Temple.

(1) When Solomon had finished building the House of GOD and the royal palace and everything that Solomon had set his heart on constructing, (2) GOD appeared to Solomon a second time, as before, at Gibeon. (3) GOD said to him, “I have heard the prayer and the supplication that you have offered to Me. I consecrate this House that you have built and I set My name there forever. My eyes and My heart shall ever be there.
