Cancerian Themes 🦀

Parashat Balak is read during the month of Tammuz, which corresponds to the mazal/zodiac sign of Sartan/Cancer.
Sartan marks the beginning of Winter in the Southern Hemisphere and Summer in the North, making it a cardinal sign. Cardinal signs are all motivated toward action; as a water sign ruled by Levanah/the Moon, the initiatory energy of Cancer is directed toward sharing emotion, the creation of literal and figurative families, and building containers for nurturing and care. Accordingly Sartan is concerned with matters of the home, one's people, roots, and everything that protects and sustains them.
The symbol of Cancer is the crab, one of only two armored animals in the tropical zodiac. This is fitting, because the deep vulnerability and tenderness of Cancer needs the protection and care it wants to offer others — and because it hints at the defensive and reactionary elements of the archetype. The most malefic elements of Cancer manifest in phenomena like racism and xenophobia, and an obsession with borders and other imaginary boundaries. For example: within a week after malefic, combative planet Mars' ingress into Sartan in September 2024, baseless racist accusations against an immigrant community in Ohio were raised during a US presidential debate.
It's therefore appropriate that Balak contains the blessing and glorification of a people and their dwelling place, the description of the divine wrath due their enemies, and the bloody demonization of interactions with people outside the in-group.

(5) How fair are your tents, O Jacob, Your dwellings, O Israel! (6) Like palm-groves that stretch out, Like gardens beside a river, Like aloes planted by יהוה, Like cedars beside the water; (7) Their boughs drip with moisture, Their roots have abundant water. Their ruler shall rise above Agag, Their sovereignty shall be exalted. (8) God who freed them from Egypt Is for them like the horns of the wild ox. They shall devour enemy nations, Crush their bones, And smash their arrows. (9) They crouch, they lie down like a lion, Like a lioness; who dares rouse them? Blessed are they who bless you, Accursed they who curse you!

(1) While Israel was staying at Shittim, the menfolk profaned themselves by whoring with the Moabite women, (2) who invited the menfolk to the sacrifices for their god. The menfolk partook of them and worshiped that god. (3) Thus Israel attached itself to Baal-peor, and יהוה was incensed with Israel. (4)יהוה said to Moses, “Take all the ringleaders and have them publicly impaled before יהוה, so that יהוה’s wrath may turn away from Israel.” (5) So Moses said to Israel’s officials, “Each of you slay those of his men who attached themselves to Baal-peor.” (6) Just then a certain Israelite man came and brought a Midianite woman over to his companions, in the sight of Moses and of the whole Israelite community who were weeping at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. (7) When Phinehas, son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he left the assembly and, taking a spear in his hand, (8) he followed the Israelite man into the chamber and stabbed both of them, the Israelite man and the woman, through the belly. Then the plague against the Israelites was checked. (9) Those who died of the plague numbered twenty-four thousand.

The Number 7

In the Sefer Yetzirah we learn 7 is a number of completion, which Hashem favors above the others:
(12) Seven Pairs, Begad-Kafrat—How did He exchange them? Two stones build two houses; three build six houses; four build twenty-four houses; five build one hundred and twenty houses; six build seven hundred and twenty houses; seven build five thousand and forty houses. From here on out, go and contemplate what the mouth cannot speak and the ear cannot hear. These are the Seven Stars in the world: the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars. These are the 7 Days in the Year: the Days of Creation. And the Seven Gates in the person: two eyes, two ears, two punctures of the nose, and the mouth. With them He carved the Seven Firmaments and the Seven Earths and the Seven Hours; for this reason, He loved the Seventh Day more than any object under the heavens.
[This verse contains one of the oldest recorded descriptions of the factorial function in mathematics.]
The later Kabbalistic tradition also notes that of the 10 sfirot or Emanations of the Divine, 7 acan be experienced within tangible reality. It is presumably because of the special status of the number 7 in Jewish cosmology that Balaam and Balak offer fourteen sacrifices on seven altars: the repetition of seven offerings meeting seven offerings on seven altars is a powerful magical act, a successful attempt at alignment with the seven lower Emanations of Hashem in an act of invocation:
שבעה מזבחות. יש סודות עמוקים לא יבינום כי אם מתי מספר ושביעי בימים ובחדשים ובשנים ושבעה כבשי העולה ושבעה הזאות גם אמר השם לאיוב קחו לכם שבעה פרים ושבעה אילים ובתת שלם לשלם אז תתחדש רוח בינה והמשכיל יבין:
SEVEN ALTARS. There are deep secrets which only a few can fathom. The number seven occurs with regard to days, months, years; the seven lambs offered for a burnt offering; the seven sprinklings. God also told Job, take unto you seven bullocks and seven rams (Job 42:8). When the complete is added to the complete, then a spirit of understanding is newly created. The intelligent will understand what I speak of.
