(יד) ויהי כאשר באו פקידי המלך עיר מודעית להעביר את העם מתורת יקוק לעבודת האלילים ולזבוח להם.
(טו) וילוו אליהם רבים מבני ישראל, ומתתיהו ובניו התחזקו.
(טז) ויאמרו שרי המלך אל מתתיהו לאמור.
(יז) הן איש נגיד ונכבד אתה בקרב עמך, ומספר בניך רבים וגם רבה משפחתך, לכן קרב נא אתה ראשונה לעשות את מצות המלך כאשר עשו בכל מדינות מלכותו, וגם כל אנשי יהודה וירושלים.
(יח) ואתה ובניך תמצאו חן בעיני המלך, וייתן לכם זהב וכסף ומתנות יקרות.
14 At that time, the king's officers were forcing the people to give up Jewish life.
15 They came to the town of Modein to make its people offer sacrifice to Greek gods.
16 Many people came from Israel, including Mattityahu and his sons.
17 Then the king's officers spoke to Mattityahu: "You're a leader, honored and important in this town, and supported by your family.
Be the first person to come and do what the king commanded, as have all the people of Jerusalem. Then you and your sons will be treated like the king's closest political advisors.
18 You and your sons will be honored with silver, gold, and many gifts."
(יט) וישא מתתיהו את קולו ויאמר.
(כ) אם אמנם יסורו כל עבדי המלך גוי גוי מאלוהיו וישמעון לקולו להמיר את חוקות אבותיהם.
(כא) לא כן אנכי ומשפחתי, כי לא נסור ימין ושמאל מאחרי חוקות אבותינו.
19 But Mattiyahu answered loudly,
20 "Even if all the nations that live under the king's rule obey him and have chosen to follow his orders, forgetting their traditions , My sons and brothers and I will continue to live according to our ancestors brit.
21 We will never forget the Law and its commands!
We won't obey the king's orders by turning away from our religion to either the right or the left."
(כד) ויהי ככלותו לדבר, ויגש איש מבני ישראל לעיני כל הניצבים אל הבמה אשר במודעית לזבוח זבח כאשר ציוה המלך.
(כה) וירא מתתיהו, ויחם לבבו ותבער קנאתו על תורת אלוהיו.
(כו) וירוץ בחמתו אל האיש, וימיתהו אצל הבמה, וגם את הפקיד המית, ויתוץ את הבמה.
(כח) וירץ אחרי כן בתוך העיר ויקרא בקול גדול ויאמר: מי האיש החרד לתורת אלוהיו ומחזיק בבריתו - יבא אחרי.
(כט) ויברח הוא ובניו אל הרי המדבר, ויעזבו כל אשר להם בתוך העיר.
24 When he finished speaking, a Jew came forward to offer a sacrifice to the Greek gods, following the king's command.
25 When Mattityahu saw this, he got very angry and his spirit was stirred up. He let his anger control him , and he ran over and killed the man on the altar.
26 He also killed the king's officer who was overseeing the sacrifice at that time, and he tore down the altar.
28 Then Mattityahu shouted loudly in the town, "Everyone who is believes in the Torah and supports the Brit should come with me!"
29 So he and his sons ran away to the hills and left behind all that they had in the town.
(יח) וְשָׁמְעוּ לְקֹלֶךָ וּבָאתָ אַתָּה וְזִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם וַאֲמַרְתֶּם אֵלָיו יקוק אֱלֹהֵי הָעִבְרִיִּים נִקְרָה עָלֵינוּ וְעַתָּה נֵלֲכָה נָּא דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים בַּמִּדְבָּר וְנִזְבְּחָה לַיקוק אֱלֹהֵינוּ.
(יט) וַאֲנִי יָדַעְתִּי כִּי לֹא יִתֵּן אֶתְכֶם מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם לַהֲלֹךְ וְלֹא בְּיָד חֲזָקָה.
(כ) וְשָׁלַחְתִּי אֶת יָדִי וְהִכֵּיתִי אֶת מִצְרַיִם בְּכֹל נִפְלְאֹתַי אֲשֶׁר אֶעֱשֶׂה בְּקִרְבּוֹ וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן יְשַׁלַּח אֶתְכֶם.
(כא) וְנָתַתִּי אֶת חֵן הָעָם הַזֶּה בְּעֵינֵי מִצְרָיִם וְהָיָה כִּי תֵלֵכוּן לֹא תֵלְכוּ רֵיקָם.
(כב) וְשָׁאֲלָה אִשָּׁה מִשְּׁכֶנְתָּהּ וּמִגָּרַת בֵּיתָהּ כְּלֵי כֶסֶף וּכְלֵי זָהָב וּשְׂמָלֹת וְשַׂמְתֶּם עַל בְּנֵיכֶם וְעַל בְּנֹתֵיכֶם וְנִצַּלְתֶּם אֶת מִצְרָיִם.
(18) And they shall listen to your voice. And you will come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt, and you shall say to him: The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. And now let us go, we pray, for a three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.
(19) And I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go, except by a mighty hand.
(20) And I will put forth My hand, and smite Egypt with all My wonders which I will do. And after that he will let you go.
(21) And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. And it will come to pass, that, when you go, you will not go empty-handed;
(22) but every woman shall ask from her neighbor, and from whoever lives in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment; and you shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and you shall take from the Egyptians.’
(כז) וַיֹּאמֶר יקוק אֶל אַהֲרֹן לֵךְ לִקְרַאת מֹשֶׁה הַמִּדְבָּרָה וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיִּפְגְּשֵׁהוּ בְּהַר הָאֱלֹהִים וַיִּשַּׁק לוֹ.
(כח) וַיַּגֵּד מֹשֶׁה לְאַהֲרֹן אֵת כָּל דִּבְרֵי יקוק אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחוֹ וְאֵת כָּל הָאֹתֹת אֲשֶׁר צִוָּהוּ.
(כט) וַיֵּלֶךְ מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן וַיַּאַסְפוּ אֶת כָּל זִקְנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
(ל) וַיְדַבֵּר אַהֲרֹן אֵת כָּל הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יקוק אֶל מֹשֶׁה וַיַּעַשׂ הָאֹתֹת לְעֵינֵי הָעָם.
(לא) וַיַּאֲמֵן הָעָם וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ כִּי פָקַד יקוק אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְכִי רָאָה אֶת עָנְיָם וַיִּקְּדוּ וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲוּוּ.
(27) And the LORD said to Aaron: ‘Go into the wilderness to meet Moses.’ And he went, and met him in the mountain of God, and kissed him.
(28) And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD wherewith He had sent him, and all the signs wherewith He had charged him.
(29) And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.
(30) And Aaron spoke all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.
(31) And the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had remembered the children of Israel, and that He had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
(יא) וַיְהִי בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם וַיִּגְדַּל מֹשֶׁה וַיֵּצֵא אֶל אֶחָיו וַיַּרְא בְּסִבְלֹתָם וַיַּרְא אִישׁ מִצְרִי מַכֶּה אִישׁ עִבְרִי מֵאֶחָיו.
(יב) וַיִּפֶן כֹּה וָכֹה וַיַּרְא כִּי אֵין אִישׁ וַיַּךְ אֶת הַמִּצְרִי וַיִּטְמְנֵהוּ בַּחוֹל.
(יג) וַיֵּצֵא בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי וְהִנֵּה שְׁנֵי אֲנָשִׁים עִבְרִים נִצִּים וַיֹּאמֶר לָרָשָׁע לָמָּה תַכֶּה רֵעֶךָ.
(יד) וַיֹּאמֶר מִי שָׂמְךָ לְאִישׁ שַׂר וְשֹׁפֵט עָלֵינוּ הַלְהָרְגֵנִי אַתָּה אֹמֵר כַּאֲשֶׁר הָרַגְתָּ אֶת הַמִּצְרִי וַיִּירָא מֹשֶׁה וַיֹּאמַר אָכֵן נוֹדַע הַדָּבָר.
(טו) וַיִּשְׁמַע פַּרְעֹה אֶת הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וַיְבַקֵּשׁ לַהֲרֹג אֶת מֹשֶׁה וַיִּבְרַח מֹשֶׁה מִפְּנֵי פַרְעֹה וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאֶרֶץ מִדְיָן וַיֵּשֶׁב עַל הַבְּאֵר.
(11) And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown up, that he went out unto his brothers, and looked at their suffering; and he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.
(12) And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he striked the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
(13) And he went out the second day, and, behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting; and he said to the wrongdoer: ‘Why are you hitting your neighbor?’
(14) And he said: ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? Are you going to kill me, just like you killed the Egyptian?’ And Moses feared, and said: ‘Surely what I did is known.’
(15) Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses ran away from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.
