all the kings of the earth, Your glory. (17) For the LORD has built Zion;

(1) God of retribution, LORD,
God of retribution, appear! (2) Rise up, judge of the earth,
give the arrogant their deserts! (3) How long shall the wicked, O LORD,
how long shall the wicked exult, (4) shall they utter insolent speech,
shall all evildoers vaunt themselves? (5) They crush Your people, O LORD,
they afflict Your very own; (6) they kill the widow and the stranger;
they murder the fatherless, (7) thinking, “The LORD does not see it,
the God of Jacob does not pay heed.”
(8) Take heed, you most brutish people;
fools, when will you get wisdom? (9) Shall He who implants the ear not hear,
He who forms the eye not see? (10) Shall He who disciplines nations not punish,
He who instructs men in knowledge? (11) The LORD knows the designs of men to be futile.
(12) Happy is the man whom You discipline, O LORD,

God of retribution, appear! (2) Rise up, judge of the earth,
give the arrogant their deserts! (3) How long shall the wicked, O LORD,
how long shall the wicked exult, (4) shall they utter insolent speech,
shall all evildoers vaunt themselves? (5) They crush Your people, O LORD,
they afflict Your very own; (6) they kill the widow and the stranger;

And accept what is good;
Instead of bulls we will pay

“What more have I to do with idols?
When I respond and look to [God],

השתפכות הנפש
מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לִזְכּוֹת לִתְשׁוּבָה יִהְיֶה רָגִיל בַּאֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים. כִּי אֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים מְסֻגָּל לִתְשׁוּבָה.
כִּי יֵשׁ נוּ"ן [חֲמִשִּׁים] שַׁעֲרֵי תְּשׁוּבָה; אַרְבָּעִים וְתִשְׁעָה שְׁעָרִים יָכוֹל כָּל אָדָם לִכְנֹס בָּהֶם וּלְהַשִּׂיגָם, אַךְ שַׁעַר הַחֲמִשִּׁים הוּא בְּחִינַת הַתְּשׁוּבָה שֶׁל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּעַצְמוֹ כִּבְיָכוֹל. כִּי גַּם אֶצְלוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ מָצִינוּ בְּחִינַת תְּשׁוּבָה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב (מַלְאֲכִי ג'): "שׁוּבוּ אֵלַי וְאָשׁוּבָה אֲלֵיכֶם".
וְאֵלּוּ הָאַרְבָּעִים וְתִשְׁעָה שַׁעֲרֵי תְּשׁוּבָה הֵם בְּחִינַת אַרְבָּעִים וְתֵשַׁע אוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בִּשְׁמוֹת שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר שִׁבְטֵי יָהּ. כִּי כָּל שַׁעַר וָשַׁעַר יֵשׁ לוֹ אוֹת מֵאַרְבָּעִים וְתֵשַׁע אוֹתִיּוֹת הַשְּׁבָטִים. וְהִנֵּה הַכֹּל חֲפֵצִים לְיִרְאָה אֶת שְׁמֶךָ, וְאַף־עַל־פִּי־כֵן לָאו כָּל אָדָם זוֹכֶה לַעֲשׂוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה. כִּי יֵשׁ אֶחָד שֶׁאֵין לוֹ הִתְעוֹרְרוּת כְּלָל לִתְשׁוּבָה, וַאֲפִלּוּ מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ הִתְעוֹרְרוּת לִתְשׁוּבָה, אֵינוֹ זוֹכֶה לְהַגִּיעַ אֶל הָאוֹת וְהַשַּׁעַר שֶׁל תְּשׁוּבָה הַשַּׁיָּךְ לוֹ. וַאֲפִלּוּ אִם מַגִּיעַ לְשָׁם יוּכַל לִהְיוֹת שֶׁהַשַּׁעַר שֶׁל תְּשׁוּבָה סָגוּר. וּמַחֲמַת כָּל זֶה אֵין הָאָדָם זוֹכֶה לִתְשׁוּבָה. וְעַל־יְדֵי אֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים אֲפִלּוּ מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ שׁוּם הִתְעוֹרְרוּת לִתְשׁוּבָה הוּא מִתְעוֹרֵר לַעֲשׂוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה. וְגַם זוֹכֶה עַל־יְדֵי תְּהִלִּים לְהַגִּיעַ אֶל הַשַּׁעַר וְהָאוֹת הַשַּׁיָּךְ לוֹ. וְלִפְתֹּחַ הַשַּׁעַר הַנִּמְצָא שֶׁזּוֹכֶה עַל־יְדֵי תְּהִלִּים לַעֲשׂוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה. וְזֶה בְּחִינַת (שְׁמוּאֵל־ב כ"ג) "נְאֻם הַגֶּבֶר הֻקַם עָל" וְדָרְשׁוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (מוֹעֵד קָטָן ט"ז) שֶׁהֵקִים עֻלָּהּ שֶׁל תְּשׁוּבָה וּנְעִים זְמִירוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל. כִּי עַל־יְדֵי בְּחִינַת נְעִים זְמִירוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל, דְּהַיְנוּ סֵפֶר תְּהִלִּים שֶׁיָּסַד עַל־יְדֵי־זֶה הוּקַם עֻלָּהּ שֶׁל תְּשׁוּבָה, כִּי עַל־יְדֵי תְּהִלִּים זוֹכֶה לִתְשׁוּבָה כַּנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל. וְזֶה שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (עֲבוֹדָה־זָרָה ד:) לֹא הָיָה דָּוִד רָאוּי לְאוֹתוֹ מַעֲשֶׂה אֶלָּא כְּדֵי לְהוֹרוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה לְיָחִיד וְכוּ'. נִמְצָא שֶׁעִקַּר הוֹרָאַת הַתְּשׁוּבָה עַל־יְדֵי דָּוִד הַמֶּלֶךְ הוּא סֵפֶר תְּהִלִּים, שֶׁאֲמָרוֹ בְּהִתְעוֹרְרוּת גָּדוֹל מְאֹד וּבְרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ, עַד שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד כְּפִי מַה שֶּׁהוּא יָכוֹל לִמְצֹא אֶת עַצְמוֹ בְּתוֹךְ סֵפֶר תְּהִלִּים וְלִזְכּוֹת לִתְשׁוּבָה עַל־יְדֵי אֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים כַּנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל.
טז: עַל עַצְמוֹ.
מְעִנְיַן אֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים דִּבֵּר עִם אֶחָד וְאָמַר לוֹ, שֶׁעִקַּר אֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים לוֹמַר כָּל מִזְמוֹרֵי תְּהִלִּים עַל עַצְמוֹ. וּפֵרֵשׁ לוֹ רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה, קְצָת כִּי כָּל הַמִּלְחָמוֹת שֶׁבִּקֵּשׁ דָּוִד הַמֶּלֶךְ, עָלָיו הַשָּׁלוֹם, שֶׁיַּצִּילֵהוּ הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ מֵהֶם הַכֹּל צְרִיכִין לְפָרֵשׁ עַל עַצְמוֹ עַל מִלְחֲמוֹת הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע.

מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לִזְכּוֹת לִתְשׁוּבָה יִהְיֶה רָגִיל בַּאֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים. כִּי אֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים מְסֻגָּל לִתְשׁוּבָה.
כִּי יֵשׁ נוּ"ן [חֲמִשִּׁים] שַׁעֲרֵי תְּשׁוּבָה; אַרְבָּעִים וְתִשְׁעָה שְׁעָרִים יָכוֹל כָּל אָדָם לִכְנֹס בָּהֶם וּלְהַשִּׂיגָם, אַךְ שַׁעַר הַחֲמִשִּׁים הוּא בְּחִינַת הַתְּשׁוּבָה שֶׁל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּעַצְמוֹ כִּבְיָכוֹל. כִּי גַּם אֶצְלוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ מָצִינוּ בְּחִינַת תְּשׁוּבָה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב (מַלְאֲכִי ג'): "שׁוּבוּ אֵלַי וְאָשׁוּבָה אֲלֵיכֶם".

טז: עַל עַצְמוֹ.

הָיָה מְחַזֵּק אֶת אֲנָשָׁיו שֶׁקָּבְלוּ לְפָנָיו בְּקֻבְלָנָא גְּדוֹלָה עַל שֶׁהֵם רְחוֹקִים מִתְּפִלָּה מְאֹד וְקָשֶׁה עֲלֵיהֶם מְאֹד לְהִתְפַּלֵּל. וְהָיָה מְחַזֵּק וּמְנַחֵם אוֹתָם בְּכַמָּה לְשׁוֹנוֹת. שֶׁלֹּא יִפְּלוּ בְּדֵעוֹתֵיהֶם בִּשְׁבִיל זֶה. אָמַר: הֲלֹא אֵצֶל הַגֵּר שֶׁנִּתְגַּיֵּר, כַּמָּה זְכִיָּה הוּא אֶצְלוֹ לֵידַע אֲמִירַת הַתֵּבוֹת לְבַד עַד בָּרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר עַל כֵּן רָאוּי לְאָדָם לְנַחֵם אֶת עַצְמוֹ וּלְשַׂמֵּחַ אֶת עַצְמוֹ אֲשֶׁר עַל כָּל פָּנִים הוּא זוֹכֶה לוֹמַר הַתֵּבוֹת שֶׁל הַתְּפִלָּה:
וְשָׁמַעְתִּי שֶׁהָיָה מְדַבֵּר עִם אִישׁ פָּשׁוּט אֶחָד מֵעִנְיַן תְּפִלָּה שֶׁקָּשֶׁה לוֹ מְאֹד לְהִתְפַּלֵּל. וְנָתַן לוֹ עֵצָה: וְאָמַר לוֹ: שֶׁיַּחֲשֹׁב בְּלִבּוֹ שֶׁאֵינוֹ צָרִיךְ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל כִּי אִם עַד "בָּרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר". כִּי אוּלַי הוּא צָרִיךְ בְּגִלְגּוּל זֶה לְתַקֵּן רַק חֵלֶק זֶה מֵהַתְּפִלָּה. כִּי אוּלַי בַּגִּלְגּוּל הָרִאשׁוֹן כְּבָר הִתְפַּלֵּל בְּכַוָּנָה שְׁאָר חֶלְקֵי הַתְּפִלָּה. רַק חֵלֶק זֶה, עַד "בָּרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר" הוּא צָרִיךְ עַכְשָׁו בְּגִלְגּוּל זֶה לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בְּכַוָּנָה. וְעַל כֵּן יַכְנִיס כָּל כֹּחוֹ בְּזֶה הַמְּעַט לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בְּכַוָּנָה עַד "בָּרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר".
וְאַחַר־כָּךְ כְּשֶׁיַּגִּיעַ לְבָרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר יַחֲשֹׁב אוּלַי צָרִיךְ לְתַקֵּן חֵלֶק זֶה, כְּגוֹן מִבָּרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר עַד "וַיְבָרֶךְ דָּוִד". וְיִתְפַּלֵּל עַד אוֹתוֹ הַחֵלֶק בְּכַוָּנָה וְכֵן לְהַלָּן.
וְהַכְּלָל שֶׁלֹּא יְבַלְבֵּל דַּעְתּוֹ בַּתְּחִלָּה בְּכָל הַתְּפִלָּה כִּי יִהְיֶה קָשֶׁה וְכָבֵד עָלָיו. רַק יִתְאַמֵּץ בְּכָל פַּעַם לוֹמַר מְעַט מְעַט בְּכַוָּנָה. כִּי מְעַט יְכוֹלִים לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בְּכַוָּנָה. וְאַחַר־כָּךְ עוֹד מְעַט וְכוּ' כַּנַּ"ל (שָׁם, סִימָן קי"א). וְגַם כְּבָר מְבֹאָר בְּ"שִׂיחוֹת הָרַ"ן" סִימָן ע"ה שֶׁבֶּאֱמֶת עַל פִּי רֹב אֵין יְכוֹלִים לְהִתְפַּלֵּל כָּל הַתְּפִלָּה בְּכַוָּנָה. רַק מְעַט. כִּי כָּל אֶחָד מִתְפַּלֵּל אֵיזֶה חֵלֶק מֵהַתְּפִלָּה לְפִי בְּחִינָתוֹ....
שֶׁלִּפְעָמִים אֵין לְהָאָדָם שׁוּם הִתְלַהֲבוּת בִּתְפִלָּה, וּצְרִיכִין לַעֲשׂוֹת לְעַצְמוֹ הִתְלַהֲבוּת וַחֲמִימוּת וְלֵב בּוֹעֵר לִתְפִלָּה. כְּמוֹ לְמָשָׁל שֶׁנִּמְצָא לִפְעָמִים שֶׁהָאָדָם עוֹשֶׂה לְעַצְמוֹ רֹגֶז עַד שֶׁבָּא בְּכַעַס וְנִתְרַגֵּזכְּמוֹ שֶׁאוֹמְרִים הָעוֹלָם בִּלְשׁוֹן אַשְׁכְּנַז עֶר שְׁנִיצְט זִיךְ אַ רֹגֶז. כְּמוֹ כֵן מַמָּשׁ בִּקְדֻשָּׁה בְּעִנְיַן הַתְּפִלָּה צְרִיכִין לִפְעָמִים לַעֲשׂוֹת לְעַצְמוֹ רֹגֶז וְיַעֲשֶׂה לוֹ חֲמִימוּת וְתַבְעֵרַת הַלֵּב בְּדִבּוּרֵי הַתְּפִלָּה אַזוֹי וִויא אֵיינֶער שְׁנִיצְט זִיךְ אַ רֹגֶז. וְעַל־יְדֵי־זֶה יָבוֹא אַחַר־כָּךְ בֶּאֱמֶת לְהִתְלַהֲבוּת גָּדוֹל בִּתְפִלָּה בֶּאֱמֶת.

שֶׁלִּפְעָמִים אֵין לְהָאָדָם שׁוּם הִתְלַהֲבוּת בִּתְפִלָּה, וּצְרִיכִין לַעֲשׂוֹת לְעַצְמוֹ הִתְלַהֲבוּת וַחֲמִימוּת וְלֵב בּוֹעֵר לִתְפִלָּה. כְּמוֹ לְמָשָׁל שֶׁנִּמְצָא לִפְעָמִים שֶׁהָאָדָם עוֹשֶׂה לְעַצְמוֹ רֹגֶז עַד שֶׁבָּא בְּכַעַס וְנִתְרַגֵּזכְּמוֹ שֶׁאוֹמְרִים הָעוֹלָם בִּלְשׁוֹן אַשְׁכְּנַז עֶר שְׁנִיצְט זִיךְ אַ רֹגֶז. כְּמוֹ כֵן מַמָּשׁ בִּקְדֻשָּׁה בְּעִנְיַן הַתְּפִלָּה צְרִיכִין לִפְעָמִים לַעֲשׂוֹת לְעַצְמוֹ רֹגֶז וְיַעֲשֶׂה לוֹ חֲמִימוּת וְתַבְעֵרַת הַלֵּב בְּדִבּוּרֵי הַתְּפִלָּה אַזוֹי וִויא אֵיינֶער שְׁנִיצְט זִיךְ אַ רֹגֶז. וְעַל־יְדֵי־זֶה יָבוֹא אַחַר־כָּךְ בֶּאֱמֶת לְהִתְלַהֲבוּת גָּדוֹל בִּתְפִלָּה בֶּאֱמֶת.
