Ashrei - אשרי

Rabbi Eliezer said in the name of Rav Avina: Anyone who says "Tehilla L'david" (Psalms 145) 3 times every day is promised that he is a member of the world to come. Why? If you say it is because it uses the Aleph Bet, let us say "Ashrei T'mimei Derech" (Psalms 119) that does it eight times! Rather [we say "Tehilla L'david"] because it has "You open Your hand" (Psalms 145:17). Then let us say Hallel HaGadol in which it is written "He gives bread to all flesh" (Psalms 136:25)! Rather because it ["Tehilla L'david"] has both.

Ima Shalom, wife of R. Eliezer, was R. Gamliel’s sister; from then she did not allow R. Eliezer to fall on his face in prayer. One day the New Moon became miscalculated for her between a twenty-nine or thirty day month. Some say: a poor man came and stood at the gate, she brought out bread to him. She found R. Eliezer fallen in prayer and said, “Get up, you have killed my brother.” Meanwhile a ram’s horn blast went out from R. Gamliel’s house [to announce] that he died. [R. Eliezer] asked, “How did you know?” She said, “So I have received a tradition from the house of my father’s father: “All gates are closed but the gates of oppression.”
