Parshas Ki Sisa: Chur and the Golden Calf

(ז)... אוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה עָמַד עֲלֵיהֶם חוּר וְאָמַר לָהֶם קְצִיעֵי צַוָּארַיָא, אֵין אַתֶּם נִזְכָּרִים מַה נִּסִּים עָשָׂה לָכֶם הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, מִיָּד עָמְדוּ עָלָיו וַהֲרָגוּהוּ. נִכַּנְסוּ עַל אַהֲרֹן, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיִּקָּהֵל הָעָם עַל אַהֲרֹן, וְאָמְרוּ לוֹ כְּשֵׁם שֶׁעָשִׂינוּ לָזֶה כָּךְ אָנוּ עוֹשִׂים לְךָ, כֵּיוָן שֶׁרָאָה אַהֲרֹן כָּךְ נִתְיָרֵא, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שמות לב, ה): וַיַּרְא אַהֲרֹן וַיִּבֶן מִזְבֵּחַ לְפָנָיו, מַהוּ מִזְבֵּחַ, מִן הַזָּבוּחַ שֶׁלְּפָנָיו.

Shemot Rabbah 41:7

When the Jews wanted to build the golden calf, they first asked Chur. When he declined, they killed him. Then they asked Aharon, who feared being killed as well, and agreed to build the golden calf.

(יב) וִידֵ֤י מֹשֶׁה֙ כְּבֵדִ֔ים וַיִּקְחוּ־אֶ֛בֶן וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ תַחְתָּ֖יו וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב עָלֶ֑יהָ וְאַהֲרֹ֨ן וְח֜וּר תָּֽמְכ֣וּ בְיָדָ֗יו מִזֶּ֤ה אֶחָד֙ וּמִזֶּ֣ה אֶחָ֔ד וַיְהִ֥י יָדָ֛יו אֱמוּנָ֖ה עַד־בֹּ֥א הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

Exodus 17:12

(12) But Moses’ hands grew heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur, one on each side, supported his hands; thus his hands remained steady until the sun set.

(יב) ומזה אחד. יבאר הכתוב כי משה כשהיה על ראש הגבעה פורש כפיו למעלה היה אהרן מימינו וחור משמאלו

Rabbeinu Bahya, Shemot 17:12:1

[When the Jews fought Amalek], Moshe stood at the top of the hill with his hands spread out, and Aharon was on his right and Chur was on his left.

Exodus 24:14

(14) To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us until we return to you. You have Aaron and Hur with you; let anyone who has a legal matter approach them.”

(ל) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רְא֛וּ קָרָ֥א ה' בְּשֵׁ֑ם בְּצַלְאֵ֛ל בֶּן־אוּרִ֥י בֶן־ח֖וּר לְמַטֵּ֥ה יְהוּדָֽה׃

Exodus 35:30

(30) And Moses said to the Israelites: See, the LORD has singled out by name Bezalel, son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.

(ג) דָּבָר אַחֵר, רְאוּ קָרָא ה' בְּשֵׁם בְּצַלְאֵל בֶּן אוּרִי בֶּן חוּר, מָה רָאָה לְהַזְכִּיר כָּאן חוּר, אֶלָּא בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁבִּקְּשׁוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲבֹד עֲבוֹדַת כּוֹכָבִים נָתַן נַפְשׁוֹ עַל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא וְלֹא הִנִּיחָן, עָמְדוּ וַהֲרָגוּהוּ, אָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא חַיֶּיךָ שֶׁאֲנִי פּוֹרֵעַ לְךָ.

Shemot Rabbah 48:3

Why does the Torah mention Betzalel's grandfather Chur? Because Betzalel was given the task of constructing the Mishkan as a reward for his gradfather Chur sacrificing his life to oppose the golden calf.

יחזקאל א׳:י׳

(י) וּדְמ֣וּת פְּנֵיהֶם֮ פְּנֵ֣י אָדָם֒ וּפְנֵ֨י אַרְיֵ֤ה אֶל־הַיָּמִין֙ לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֔ם וּפְנֵי־שׁ֥וֹר מֵֽהַשְּׂמֹ֖אול לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֑ן וּפְנֵי־נֶ֖שֶׁר לְאַרְבַּעְתָּֽן׃

Ezekiel 1:10

(10) Each of them had a human face [at the front]; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right; each of the four had the face of an ox on the left; and each of the four had the face of an eagle [at the back].

משנה אבות א׳:י״ב

(יב) הִלֵּל וְשַׁמַּאי קִבְּלוּ מֵהֶם. הִלֵּל אוֹמֵר, הֱוֵי מִתַּלְמִידָיו שֶׁל אַהֲרֹן, אוֹהֵב שָׁלוֹם וְרוֹדֵף שָׁלוֹם, אוֹהֵב אֶת הַבְּרִיּוֹת וּמְקָרְבָן לַתּוֹרָה:

Pirkei Avot 1:12

(12) Hillel and Shammai received from them. Hillel says, "Be of the disciples of Aharon, loving peace and pursuing peace, loving the creatures and bringing them closer to Torah."
