Stranger and Citizen, Privilege and Vulnerability
(9) You shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the feelings of the stranger, having yourselves been strangers in the land of Egypt.
(33) When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not wrong him. (34) The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I the LORD am your God.
(49) There shall be one law for the citizen and for the stranger who dwells among you.
You shall have one standard for stranger and citizen alike: for I the LORD am your God.
(14) And when, throughout the ages, a stranger who has taken up residence with you, or one who lives among you, would present an offering by fire of pleasing odor to the LORD—as you do, so shall it be done by (15) the rest of the congregation. There shall be one law for you and for the resident stranger; it shall be a law for all time throughout the ages. You and the stranger shall be alike before the LORD; (16) the same ritual and the same rule shall apply to you and to the stranger who resides among you.
(17) For the LORD your God is God supreme and Lord supreme, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who shows no favor and takes no bribe, (18) but upholds the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and befriends the stranger, providing him with food and clothing.— (19) You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
(23) But the land must not be sold beyond reclaim, for the land is Mine; you are but strangers resident with Me.
Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg's Epic Thread on Anti-Semitism
(title from article on JewSchool)
I want to say a thing or two about the unique nature of anti-Semitism, privilege, ambivalence, and this moment. 1/
I am almost certain to be interrupted mid-thread by a kid or 3 waking up, so bear with me. 2/
First, some history. In the Middle Ages in many parts of Christian Europe, Jews weren't allowed to own land. 3/
And they were relegated to marginal trades--ones associated with depravity & sin. 4/
Christians didn't/couldn't lend $ to other Christians. Jews could, though, and so that's how they became the moneylenders in many places. 5/
Also, we had a shared language (Hebrew) that made it possible to conduct int'l business--Jews in Germany could talk to Jews in Egypt. 6/
(Jews living in Islamic countries had it much better generally, btw. Protected status as one of the People of the Book.) 7/
So that's how Jews became moneylenders, in a nutshell. Farming was preferable in a lot of ways, but that wasn't an option in many places. 8/
So Jews became successful at handling money bc that was was was on the menu for us. But then... we were resented for it. 9/
A lot of the anti-Semitism from then on was based on us being rich, cunning, exploitative. Globalists, if you will, w/secret control. 10/
Quick google search just now:
(She shares a link to a Google image search for Jews and money. Results are basically a lot of disturbing images, propaganda, etc.) 11/
This "rich evil Jew" narrative fueled expulsions, pogroms, the Holocaust. 12/
(Why is there no Wikipedia of all the countries Jews have been kicked out of? England, 1290. Spain, 1492. Portugal 1496. Italy 1533 etc. 13/
All this to say that Jewish success and anti-Semitism are inextricably linked historically. So too today. 14/
The money and "globalist" imagery in Trump's dogwhistling. Paid Soros protestors. Etc. 15/
There are a lot of reasons why Jews have been successful in the US (overall--lots of poor Jews too), that's a whole other thread. 16/
But here's my ambivalence. Jews still have a lot more social & cultural capital than lots of other groups in the US. Let's be real. 17/
At this moment, EVEN with our cemeteries being DESECRATED, I don't worry for us the way I worry for Muslims, undocumented ppl, + 18/
Some Jews are POC, some Jews are trans; but POC and trans folks as a category are in much more danger than Jews as a category now. 19/
Some people may dispute this. Bomb threats to the places we send our children is not nothing. No need to play oppression olympics. BUT. 20/
I'm still pretty sure Jews are going to be shielded from the State violence that a lot of other groups are experiencing. 21/
But/and the flip-flopping I've done these last couple tweets is the point here. (22 tweets in and I'm getting there!) 22/
Historically, for Jews, and in this moment too, anti-Semitism and privilege are often (not always) deeply intertwined. 23/
Is my awareness of my own privilege (& in the US I also have a white privilege that my ancestors didn't have in Europe) impacting... 24/
how I'm reading the situation now? I don't know. I know the parts of the J community that scream that they're the victim no matter what 25/
make me insane and I think when we don't own the power that we do have, we are complicit at best (& much worse at worst) in great harm. 26/
So much of what I can say about anti-Semitism now is that it's complicated. The privilege piece is DEEPLY complicated here. 27/
