When Sarah dies while she and Avraham are in Hebron, Avraham immediately coordinates a burial place for her - he asks the owner of Maarat HaMachpelah, Ephron haChiti, to buy the land for her. Ephron feigns disinterest in being paid, but Avraham pays anyway. He

(ט) וְיִתֶּן־לִ֗י אֶת־מְעָרַ֤ת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּקְצֵ֣ה שָׂדֵ֑הוּ בְּכֶ֨סֶף מָלֵ֜א יִתְּנֶ֥נָּה לִּ֛י בְּתוֹכְכֶ֖ם לַאֲחֻזַּת־קָֽבֶר׃

(9) Let him sell me the cave of Machpelah that he owns, which is at the edge of his land. Let him sell it to me, at the full price, for a burial site in your midst.”

((יט) וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן֩ קָבַ֨ר אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ אֶל־מְעָרַ֞ת שְׂדֵ֧ה הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה עַל־פְּנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א הִ֣וא חֶבְר֑וֹן בְּאֶ֖רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃

19)And then Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre—now Hebron—in the land of Canaan.

...Adam said: Whilst I am yet alive I will build for myself a mausoleum to rest therein. Adam said: If in the case of the tablets (of stone), just because in the future they will be written by the finger (of God), the waters of the Jordan are destined to flee before them; how much more so will this be the case with my body which His two hands kneaded, and because He breathed into my nostrils the breath of the spirit of His mouth? After my death they will come and take my bones, and they will make them into an image for idolatry; but verily I will put my coffin deep down beneath the cave and within the cave.

(ה) וַיָּ֨מָת שָׁ֜ם מֹשֶׁ֧ה עֶֽבֶד־יהוה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מוֹאָ֖ב עַל־פִּ֥י יהוה׃ (ו) וַיִּקְבֹּ֨ר אֹת֤וֹ בַגַּיְ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מוֹאָ֔ב מ֖וּל בֵּ֣ית פְּע֑וֹר וְלֹֽא־יָדַ֥ע אִישׁ֙ אֶת־קְבֻ֣רָת֔וֹ עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

(5) So Moses the servant of the LORD died there, in the land of Moab, at the command of the LORD. (6) He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, near Beth-peor; and no one knows his burial place to this day.

עד היום הזה שלא יקבר איש אצלו כענין שנעשה בבית אל ושלא ידרשו בו שואלי מתים.

The principal reason for this is to make it impossible for anyone to be buried next to him. This was in order to prevent necromancers from using this site for their purposes.

שלא יהיה מקום קבורתו נודע לאחד מהאנשים והנה עשה זה השם יתעלה כי אולי אם נודע מקום טעו יעטו הדורות הבאים ויעשו ממנו אלוה

...so that his place of burial should not be known to anyone. And Hashem did this since if his burial place were known, perhaps someone in future generations might err and turn him into a god.

The Ohel is where the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, was laid to rest on the 3rd of Tammuz 5754 (June 12, 1994), next to his father-in-law, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Y. Schneersohn, of righteous memory
Our Sages declare that the Righteous are even greater after their passing than during their lifetime.
The Rebbe, would frequent the gravesite of his father-in-law, the sixth Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, several times a week.
Today, thousands of people from all walks of life and all shades of the spectrum, affiliated and non-affiliated, come to the Ohel to pray at all hours of the day and night to receive inspiration, blessing and guidance.
Stories abound of miraculous reprieve resulting from a visit to the Ohel. This should come as no surprise as we recognize the Rebbe's spirituality and holiness.
Being in the Rebbe's presence has not only a salutary, redemptive effect, but motivates and charges one to continue, indeed to strengthen, one's thought, speech and actions in the realm of goodness and kindness.

Segula for Marriage

Jewish tradition relates that Yonatan Ben Uziel never married because he preferred to dedicate all of his time to his Torah studies. Toward the end of his life he regretted this, so in order to encourage marriages he gave a blessing that all those who are unmarried will find their soulmates within a period of one year if they visit his resting place. His gravesite at Amukah is a compelling pilgrimage site for singles who pray that, through Rabbi Ben Uziel’s intervention in the heavens, they will meet their soulmate.

(א) לֹא תַעֲשׂוּ לָכֶם אֱלִילִם וּפֶסֶל וּמַצֵּבָה לֹא תָקִימוּ לָכֶם וְאֶבֶן מַשְׂכִּית לֹא תִתְּנוּ בְּאַרְצְכֶם לְהִשְׁתַּחֲו‍ֹת עָלֶיהָ כִּי אֲנִי יהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם.

(19) And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath—the same is Beth-lehem. (20) And Jacob set up a pillar upon her grave; the same is the pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day.

(יח) וַיַּשְׁכֵּם יַעֲקֹב בַּבֹּקֶר וַיִּקַּח אֶת הָאֶבֶן אֲשֶׁר שָׂם מְרַאֲשֹׁתָיו וַיָּשֶׂם אֹתָהּ מַצֵּבָה וַיִּצֹק שֶׁמֶן עַל רֹאשָׁהּ. (18) And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. (20) And Jacob vowed a vow, saying: ‘If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, (21) so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then shall the LORD be my God, (22) and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that Thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto Thee.’

In the Torah

(י) לֹֽא־יִמָּצֵ֣א בְךָ֔ מַעֲבִ֥יר בְּנֽוֹ־וּבִתּ֖וֹ בָּאֵ֑שׁ קֹסֵ֣ם קְסָמִ֔ים מְעוֹנֵ֥ן וּמְנַחֵ֖שׁ וּמְכַשֵּֽׁף׃ (יא) וְחֹבֵ֖ר חָ֑בֶר וְשֹׁאֵ֥ל אוֹב֙ וְיִדְּעֹנִ֔י וְדֹרֵ֖שׁ אֶל־הַמֵּתִֽים׃

(10) Let no one be found among you who consigns his son or daughter to the fire, or who is an augur, a soothsayer, a diviner, a sorcerer, (11) one who casts spells, or one who consults ghosts or familiar spirits, or one who inquires of the dead.

רבן שמעון בן גמליאל אומר אין עושין נפשות לצדיקים דבריהם הן הן זכרונן

Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says, "We do not make grave markers for tzadikim [righteous people]. Their words are their memorial."

May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians, for they have taken the graves of their Prophets as places of worship.

וְלֹא יִפְנֶה אָדָם לְבַקֵּר הַקְּבָרוֹת:

There is a long standing tradition in Judaism about visiting and praying at the graves of our relatives. It is often referred to as “Kever Avot” (the graves of our ancestors), and the usual custom is to go on the anniversary of their death (Yahrzeit) and pray to God for a peaceful eternal rest for the deceased. Some also go during the month of Elul before Rosh Hashana, and at other designated times during the year. We also ask that on the basis of their good deeds, that we, their descendants, be merited as well.
In the Talmud (Ta’anit 16a) there is a discussion about going to the graves of various devout individuals. The entire experience is explained one of two ways: we either go and ask the deceased to intercede for us with God and plead mercy for our misdoings, or we go in order to remind us of our own mortality and that since our time on earth is limited, we should improve our behaviors immediately.
The issue of asking the deceased to intercede on our behalf raises many problems, not the least of which is the violation of the Biblical injunction, found in the Ten Commandments, “Thou shall not have any other gods in My presence.” (Exodus 20:3) By praying to the deceased, we have turned them into a god. It is also in violation of the commandment that says not to consult with the dead. (Deut. 18:10-11). Others feel it is ok to ask the deceased to just “deliver the message” and that we are not praying to them as a god.

For a cemetery is the resting place of tzadikim (righteous people), and prayers are better accepted there. But don't aim your intentions towards the dead, but rather request of the Holy One, May He be Blessed, to have mercy on you in the merit of the tzadikim in the earth there.And encircle the cemetery, and give tzedakah (charity) before you make your pleas. And do not go to a grave twice in a single day.

(ג) לא יהלך בבית הקברות או בתוך ד' אמות של מת או של קבר וספר תורה בזרועו ויקרא בו או יתפלל והוא הדין על פה אסור לקרות אלא אם כן לכבוד המת כמו שנתבאר (וע"ל סימן שד"מ סעיף ט"ז):

(3) One may not walk on the cemetery or within four cubits of a corpse or a grave while [holding] a Torah scroll in his arm and read in it, [nor] may one recite the Tefillah [there]. Likewise, is it forbidden to recite [Biblical verses] orally [on the cemetery], unless it is for the honour of the dead as has been explained.

(א)שלא לנהוג קלות ראש בבית הקברות. ובו ג' סעיפים:בית הקברות אין נוהגין בהן קלות ראש (כגון לפנות שם (כל בו) או לאכול ולשתות שם ואין קורין ואין שונין שם

(1) Burial grounds must not be treated irreverently, — e.g., to ease oneself thereinor to eat or drink therein;and one does not read [Bible] nor study [Mishna] therein...
