(23) God sent the human forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the soil from which humans were taken.
(28) When Lamech had lived 182 years, he begot a son. (29) And he named him Noah, saying, “This one will provide us relief from our work and from the toil of our hands, out of the very soil which the Divine placed under a curse.”
(8) The advantage of land is supreme; even the king is subject to the soil.
כיון שנולד נח מהול מיד ידע למך ואמר ודאי זה ינחמנו וגו'. ומהו ממעשינו ומעצבון ידינו קודם שנולד נח לא כשהיו זורעין היו קוצרין אלא היו זורעין חטים וקוצרים קוצים ודרדרים כיון שנולד נח חזר העולם לישובו. קצרו מה שזרעו זורעין חיטין וקוצרין חטים, שעורים וקוצרין שעורים, ולא עוד אלא עד שלא נולד נח עושין מלאכה בידיהם לכך כתיב ומעצבון ידינו. נולד נח התקין להם מחרשות ומגלות וקרדומות וכל כלי מלאכה:
Before Noah’s birth, when people sowed, they reaped something other than what they had sown. If they sowed wheat, thorns and thistles grew. But after Noah was born, the earth returned to its normal ways. People reaped what they sowed. If they sowed wheat, they reaped wheat. ... Also, until Noah was born, people worked the earth with their hands. ...At the birth of Noah, they received plows, scythes, hoes, and other tools for working the earth.
ובמה הוא חשוב יותר מהתולעת, שהתולעת עובד להבורא יתברך בכל שכלו וכחו. והאדם ג״כ רמה ותולעה, כמ״ש ואנכי תולעת ולא איש, ואם לא נתן לו השי״ת שכל לא היה יכול לעבדו רק כמו תולעת, וא״כ אפילו מתולעת אינו חשוב במעלה כ״ש מבני אדם. ויחשוב שהוא לתולעת ושארי בריות קטנות הם חשובים כמו חבירים בעולם, שכולם נבראים ואין להם יכולת רק מה שנתן להם הבורא יתברך, ודבר זה יהיה תמיד במחשבתו:

What makes you superior to a worm? The worm serves the Creator with all its mind and strength! Human, too, is a worm and maggot, as it is written “I am a worm and no man.” (Psalms 22:7) If God had not given you intelligence you would not be able to worship God but like a worm. Thus you are no better than a worm, and certainly [no better] than [other] people. Bear in mind that you, the worm and all other small creatures are considered as friends in the world. For all were created and have but the ability given to them by the blessed Creator. Always keep this matter in mind.
