(כט) ויבך על צואריו עוד ... אֲבָל יַעֲקֹב לֹא נָפַל עַל צַוְּארֵי יוֹסֵף וְלֹא נְשָׁקוֹ, וְאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ, שֶׁהָיָה קוֹרֵא אֶת שְׁמַע:
(29) ויבך על צואריו עוד AND WEPT ON HIS NECK A GOOD WHILE — ... Jacob, however, did not fall upon Joseph’s neck nor did he kiss him. Our Rabbis say: the reason was that he was reciting the Shema.
(כט) ד מקשים העולם דילמא היה עומד ומתפלל, ונראה לי דהא אמרו רבותינו זכרונם לברכה (ברכות כ"ז.) אסור לעבור לפני המתפלל כדי שלא יבטל כוונתו, וכל שכן יוסף איך נפל על צווארו שמא יבטל כוונת יעקב וכו', אבל קריאת שמע עיקר הכוונה הוא בפסוק ראשון דהוא עיקר קבלת עול מלכות שמים, והוא נפל עליו לאחר שקרא פסוק ראשון, ואם תאמר יוסף למה לא קרא גם כן את שמע, ויש לומר דיוסף היה עוסק במצות כבוד אביו ועוסק במצוה פטור מן המצוה, (סוכה כ"ה.) ועיין לעיל דיוסף היה פוטר עצמו בפסוק ראשון מפני שהיה טרוד.
Everyone asks, maybe he was praying [shmona esray and not reciting shema]? It appears to me, that our Sages of blessed memory said (Brachos 27A), that it is forbidden to pass before one who is praying so as not to disturb his concentration, and certainly Yosef would not have fallen on his neck lest it disturb his concentration, but regarding the shema, the main concentration is in the first verse, which has the accepting of the yoke of heaven, and Yosef fell on his neck after he had read the first verse. And if you will ask, why wasn't Yosef reciting shema? One can answer that Yosef was busy with the mitzvah of honoring one's parents and was exempt from the mitzvah (Sukka 25A). And see above [where we said] that Yosef exempted himself with the first verse because he was busy.
