10th Tevet - a contextual journey

(א) חַיָּבִים לְהִתְעַנּוֹת בְּתִשְׁעָה בְּאָב וּבְי''ז בְּתַמּוּז וּבְג' בְּתִשְׁרֵי וּבַעֲשָׂרָה בְּטֵבֵת, מִפְּנֵי דְּבָרִים הָרָעִים שֶׁאֵרְעוּ בָּהֶם.

(1) (1) We are obligated to fast on the ninth of Av (Tisha b'Av) and the seventeenth of Tammuz (Shiva-Asar b'Tammuz), as well as on the third of Tishrei (Tzom Gedalia) and the tenth of Tevet (Asarah b'Tevet) (2) on account of the terrible things that occurred on these days.

(א) וַיְהִי֩ בִשְׁנַ֨ת הַתְּשִׁיעִ֜ית לְמָלְכ֗וֹ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָעֲשִׂירִי֮ בֶּעָשׂ֣וֹר לַחֹדֶשׁ֒ בָּ֠א נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֨ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֜ל ה֧וּא וְכָל־חֵיל֛וֹ עַל־יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וַיִּ֣חַן עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּבְנ֥וּ עָלֶ֖יהָ דָּיֵ֥ק סָבִֽיב׃ (ב) וַתָּבֹ֥א הָעִ֖יר בַּמָּצ֑וֹר עַ֚ד עַשְׁתֵּ֣י עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּֽהוּ׃

(1) And in the ninth year of his reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar moved against Jerusalem with his whole army. He besieged it; and they built towers against it all around. (2) The city continued in a state of siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

Selichot Addition to Shacharit Service on 10th Tevet: Ezkera Matzok by Joseph B Samuel 1050 אֶזְכְּרָה מָצוֹק אֲשֶׁר קְרָאַנִי

‘I remember the distress which befell me; three blows He inflicted on me in this month… on the 8th day… the Greek King compelled me to translate the Law (Torah) into Greek… on the 9th, Ezra the scribe, was forcibly torn away… on the 10th (the day when the Babylonian enemy began to lay siege to Jerusalem prior to the destruction of the First Temple) the son of Buzi (Ezekiel) was commanded to record in the book of prophecy the date of this very day as a memorial for a despised and decaying people

Ezra made 10 enactments (1) Reading the Torah at Min'ha on Shabbat - (2) Reading the Torah on Mondays and Thursdays - (3) Beth Din sits to judge on Mondays and Thursdays

Minor Tractate Sofrim Chapt.1, Mishnah 7“There were once five wise Jews who wrote the Torah in Greek for King Talmai, (the Greco-Egyptian King Ptolemy II, reigned 283 - 246 BCE), that day was as difficult for the people of Israel as the day the Golden Calf was made, the Torah could not be fully translated.”

מעשה בתלמי המלך שכינס שבעים ושנים זקנים והכניסן בשבעים ושנים בתים ולא גילה להם על מה כינסן ונכנס אצל כל אחד ואחד ואמר להם כתבו לי תורת משה רבכם נתן הקב"ה בלב כל אחד ואחד עצה והסכימו כולן לדעת אחת וכתבו לו

It happened that King Ptolemy brought together seventy-two elders and placed them in seventy-two [separate] rooms, without telling them why he had brought them together, and he went in to each one of them and said to him, Translate for me the Torah of Moses your master. God then gave each one of them wisdom and they all conceived the same idea. And they wrote for him,

א"ר יוחנן (בראשית ט, כז) יפת אלהים ליפת וישכן באהלי שם דבריו של יפת יהיו באהלי שם

R. Yohanan further said: Scripture says, “God will enlarge Yapheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem” (Genesis 9:26); [this means] that the words of Yapheth shall be in the tents of Shem.

(ב) וְהָיָ֗ה בַּיּוֹם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּעַבְר֣וּ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ אֶל־הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֣ן לָ֑ךְ וַהֲקֵמֹתָ֤ לְךָ֙ אֲבָנִ֣ים גְּדֹל֔וֹת וְשַׂדְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם בַּשִּֽׂיד׃ (ג) וְכָתַבְתָּ֣ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ן אֶֽת־כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֛י הַתּוֹרָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את (ח) וְכָתַבְתָּ֣ עַל־הָאֲבָנִ֗ים אֶֽת־כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֛י הַתּוֹרָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את בַּאֵ֥ר הֵיטֵֽב׃ (ס)

(2) As soon as you have crossed the Jordan into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones. Coat them with plaster (3) and inscribe upon them all the words of this Teaching. (8) And on those stones you shall inscribe every word of this Teaching most distinctly.

(ח) באר היטב. בשבעים לשון:

(8) באר היטב EXPLAINING THEM WELL — i.e. in seventy languages

(י) כִּ֤י עֶזְרָא֙ הֵכִ֣ין לְבָב֔וֹ לִדְרֹ֛שׁ אֶת־תּוֹרַ֥ת יְהֹוָ֖ה וְלַעֲשֹׂ֑ת וּלְלַמֵּ֥ד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל חֹ֥ק וּמִשְׁפָּֽט׃ {ס}
(10) For Ezra had dedicated himself to study the Teaching of the LORD so as to observe it, and to teach laws and rules to Israel.
(ב) כִּֽי־נָשְׂא֣וּ מִבְּנֹֽתֵיהֶ֗ם לָהֶם֙ וְלִבְנֵיהֶ֔ם וְהִתְעָֽרְבוּ֙ זֶ֣רַע הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ בְּעַמֵּ֖י הָאֲרָצ֑וֹת וְיַ֧ד הַשָּׂרִ֣ים וְהַסְּגָנִ֗ים הָ֥יְתָ֛ה בַּמַּ֥עַל הַזֶּ֖ה רִאשׁוֹנָֽה׃ (ג) וּכְשׇׁמְעִי֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה קָרַ֥עְתִּי אֶת־בִּגְדִ֖י וּמְעִילִ֑י וָאֶמְרְטָ֞ה מִשְּׂעַ֤ר רֹאשִׁי֙ וּזְקָנִ֔י וָאֵשְׁבָ֖ה מְשׁוֹמֵֽם׃ (ד) וְאֵלַ֣י יֵאָסְפ֗וּ כֹּ֤ל חָרֵד֙ בְּדִבְרֵ֣י אֱלֹהֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַ֖ל מַ֣עַל הַגּוֹלָ֑ה וַאֲנִי֙ יֹשֵׁ֣ב מְשׁוֹמֵ֔ם עַ֖ד לְמִנְחַ֥ת הָעָֽרֶב׃

(2) They have taken their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that their offspring has become intermingled with the peoples of the land; and it is the officers and prefects who have taken the lead in this trespass.” (3) When I heard this, I rent my garment and robe, I tore hair out of my head and beard, and I sat desolate. (4) Around me gathered all who were concerned over the words of the God of Israel because of the returning exiles’ trespass, while I sat desolate until the evening offering.

(ו) חמשה דברים אירעו את אבותינו בשבעה עשר בתמוז. וחמשה בתשעה באב. בשבעה עשר בתמוז נשתברו הלוחות. ובטל התמיד. והובקעה העיר. ושרף אפוסטמוס את התורה. והעמיד צלם בהיכל. בתשעה באב נגזר על אבותינו שלא יכנסו לארץ. וחרב הבית בראשונה. ובשניה. ונלכדה ביתר. ונחרשה העיר. משנכנס אב ממעטין בשמחה:

(6) Five events befell out ancestors on the seventeeth of Tamuz and five on the Ninth of Av. On the seventeenth of Tamuz, the Tablets were broken, the Tamid offering was ended, the city walls were breached, Apaustamous burned the Torah, an idol was placed in the temple courtyard. On the Ninth of Av, it was decreed upon our ancestors that they would not be allowed to enter the Land of Israel, the First and Second temples were destroyed, Beitar was captured, The city of Jerusalem was plowed over. From when the month of Av starts, we reduce joy.

(יט) כֹּֽה־אָמַ֞ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת צ֣וֹם הָרְבִיעִ֡י וְצ֣וֹם הַחֲמִישִׁי֩ וְצ֨וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֜י וְצ֣וֹם הָעֲשִׂירִ֗י יִהְיֶ֤ה לְבֵית־יְהוּדָה֙ לְשָׂשׂ֣וֹן וּלְשִׂמְחָ֔ה וּֽלְמֹעֲדִ֖ים טוֹבִ֑ים וְהָאֱמֶ֥ת וְהַשָּׁל֖וֹם אֱהָֽבוּ׃ (פ)

(19) Thus said the LORD of Hosts: The fast of the fourth month, the fast of the fifth month, the fast of the seventh month, and the fast of the tenth month shall become occasions for joy and gladness, happy festivals for the House of Judah; but you must love honesty and integrity.

“The day on which the first churban (destruction) commenced should become a memorial day also for the last churban”

Two years later (1951) the rabbinate decided officially to turn this day into a memorial day for Shoah victims whose date of death is unknown. The 10th Tevet is recognized as the “General Kaddish Day” when all those victims whose actual date of death is unknown are commemorated in synagogues.
