Another take: "To he that sets right the way, I will show the salvation of God" (Psalms 50:23) applies to people who light lamps in order to provide light for the public/majority. For R. Simeon ben Lakish said: Saul merited kingship only because his grandfather had lit lamps for the public. It is said there are dark alleys between his own house and the house of study, and he used to light lamps in them to give light to the public.
