שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר אַבָּא בְּשֵׁם רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן אָמַר אַרְבָּעָה דְּבָרִים הֶרְאָה לוֹ, גֵּיהִנֹּם, וּמַלְכֻיּוֹת, וּמַתַּן תּוֹרָה, וּבֵית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ, אָמַר לוֹ, כָּל זְמַן שֶׁבָּנֶיךָ עֲסוּקִים בִּשְׁתַּיִם, הֵם נִצּוֹלִים מִשְׁתַּיִם... אָמַר לוֹ בַּמֶּה אַתָּה רוֹצֶה שֶׁיֵּרָדוּ בָנֶיךָ, בַּגֵּיהִנֹּם אוֹ בַּמַּלְכֻיּוֹת?
רַבִּי חֲנִינָא בַּר פָּפָּא אָמַר אַבְרָהָם בֵּרַר לוֹ אֶת הַמַּלְכֻיּוֹת.
רַבִּי יוּדָן וְרַבִּי אִידֵי וְרַבִּי חָמָא בַּר חֲנִינָא אָמְרוּ אַבְרָהָם בֵּרַר גֵּיהִנֹּם וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא בֵּרַר לוֹ אֶת הַמַּלְכֻיּוֹת.
“It happened when the sun had set, that there was extreme darkness, and, behold, there was a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between those pieces”.
Rabbi Yoḥanan said: He showed him four things: Gehennom; the Kingdoms; the giving of the Torah; and the Bet Hamikdash. He said to him: ‘As long as your descendants are engaged in two, they will be saved from the other two. He said to him: ‘Through which do you wish your descendants to be punished, through Gehennom or through the Kingdoms?’
Rabbi Ḥanina b. Pappa said: Abraham chose the Kingdoms.
Rabbi Yudan... said: Abraham chose Gehennom, but the Holy One blessed be He chose the Kingdoms on his behalf.
(פז) וכאשר תבוא צרה לאדם וינצל ממנה בישועת השי"ת אין זה שינוי חלילה ברצונו יתברך רק היה גלוי להשי"ת שהאדם צריך לבוא להצרה ולהנצל ממנה ובפרט יציאת מצרים אשר הכנסתן למצרים היה בגזירה מוחלטת וע"ז נכרת ברית בין הבתרים עם אברהם אבינו אשר היה צריך ליתן אותם בכור הברזל לצרף אותן...
When a person is faced with struggle and Hashem saves them from it, this isn't because G-d "changed his mind". Rather, it shows that G-d realized that this person needed this challenge and the salvation from it.
Yetziyat Mitzrayim was exactly this. Coming there was simply G-d's decree. This was the entire basis of the Brit Bain Habetarim with Avraham, since it was known that Hakadosh Baruch needed to put Avraham's descendents through the kiln in order to purify them.
