Argument for the sake of Heaven

Exemplars - Hillel and Shammai

(יז) כָּל מַחֲלֹקֶת שֶׁהִיא לְשֵׁם שָׁמַיִם, סוֹפָהּ לְהִתְקַיֵּם.
וְשֶׁאֵינָהּ לְשֵׁם שָׁמַיִם, אֵין סוֹפָהּ לְהִתְקַיֵּם.
אֵיזוֹ הִיא מַחֲלֹקֶת שֶׁהִיא לְשֵׁם שָׁמַיִם, זוֹ מַחֲלֹקֶת הִלֵּל וְשַׁמַּאי.
וְשֶׁאֵינָהּ לְשֵׁם שָׁמַיִם, זוֹ מַחֲלֹקֶת קֹרַח וְכָל עֲדָתוֹ:
(17) Every argument that is for [the sake of] heaven, it is destined to endure.
But if it is not for [the sake of] heaven -- it is not destined to endure.
What is [an example of an argument] for [the sake of] heaven? The argument of Hillel and Shammai.
What is [an example of an argument] not for [the sake of] heaven? The argument of Korach and all of his congregation.

Both tough negotiators..... (but we like Hillel best)

א"ר אבא אמר שמואל
שלש שנים נחלקו ב"ש וב"ה הללו אומרים הלכה כמותנו והללו אומרים הלכה כמותנו
יצאה בת קול ואמרהאלו ואלו דברי אלקים חיים הן והלכה כב"ה
וכי מאחר שאלו ואלו דברי אלקים חיים מפני מה זכו ב"ה לקבוע הלכה כמותן
מפני שנוחין ועלובין היו ושונין דבריהן ודברי ב"שולא עוד אלא שמקדימין דברי ב"ש לדבריהן
Rabbi Abba said in the name of Shmuel,
For three years, the House of Hillel and the House of Shammai argued. One said, 'The halacha is like us,' and the other said, 'The halacha is like us.'
A heavenly voice spoke: “These and these are the words of the living God. And the halacha is like the House of Hillel.”
A question was raised: Since the heavenly voice declared: “Both these and those are the words of the Living God” why was the halacha established to follow the opinion of Hillel?
It is because the students of Hillel were kind and gracious. They taught their own ideas as well as the ideas from the students of Shammai.Not only that, but they taught Shammai's opinions first.
לְלַמֶּדְךָ שֶׁכׇּל הַמַּשְׁפִּיל עַצְמוֹ — הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מַגְבִּיהוֹ, וְכׇל הַמַּגְבִּיהַּ עַצְמוֹ — הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מַשְׁפִּילוֹ.
כׇּל הַמְחַזֵּר עַל הַגְּדוּלָּה — גְּדוּלָּה בּוֹרַחַת מִמֶּנּוּ, וְכׇל הַבּוֹרֵחַ מִן הַגְּדוּלָּה — גְּדוּלָּה מְחַזֶּרֶת אַחֲרָיו,
וְכׇל הַדּוֹחֵק אֶת הַשָּׁעָה — שָׁעָה דּוֹחַקְתּוֹ, וְכׇל הַנִּדְחֶה מִפְּנֵי שָׁעָה — שָׁעָה עוֹמֶדֶת לוֹ.
This teaches you that anyone who humbles themself, the Holy Blessed One, exalts them. And anyone who exalts themself, the Holy Blessed One humbles them.
Anyone who seeks greatness, greatness flees from them, and, conversely, anyone who flees from greatness, greatness seeks them.
And anyone who attempts to force the moment the moment pushes back [ie. their plans backfire]. And anyone who yields to the moment, the moment aligns with them.
In Messianic times things will be different......
Mikdash Melech to Zohar Parshas Bereishis 17b
In the time of the Messiah, we will follow the law according to Shammai.
Hillel represents kindness and Shammai severity (hence the rulings of Beit Hillel are almost always more lenient).
When the Messiah comes the advantage of the severity will be revealed and therefore the law will be in accordance with Beit Shammai.
Beit Shammai comes from such a high level this present world is incapable of withstanding and only when Messiah comes will we be able to follow their opinion.

Another intractable argument between Hillel and Shammai....

תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן: שְׁתֵּי שָׁנִים וּמֶחֱצָה נֶחְלְקוּ בֵּית שַׁמַּאי וּבֵית הִלֵּל. הַלָּלוּ אוֹמְרִים: נוֹחַ לוֹ לְאָדָם שֶׁלֹּא נִבְרָא יוֹתֵר מִשֶּׁנִּבְרָא, וְהַלָּלוּ אוֹמְרִים: נוֹחַ לוֹ לְאָדָם שֶׁנִּבְרָא יוֹתֵר מִשֶּׁלֹּא נִבְרָא.
נִמְנוּ וְגָמְרוּ: נוֹחַ לוֹ לְאָדָם שֶׁלֹּא נִבְרָא יוֹתֵר מִשֶּׁנִּבְרָא,
עַכְשָׁיו שֶׁנִּבְרָא — יְפַשְׁפֵּשׁ בְּמַעֲשָׂיו. וְאָמְרִי לַהּ: יְמַשְׁמֵשׁ בְּמַעֲשָׂיו.
The Sages taught: For two and a half years, Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel disagreed.
One argued it would have been better had humans not been created. The other said: It is better that humans were created.
The votes were counted and concluded: It would have been preferable had humans not been created than to have been created.
However, given that humans were in fact created, they should explore their actions (yepashpesh). And some say: they should scrutinize their actions (yemashmesh).

Shammai = tough Hillel = gentle

שׁוּב מַעֲשֶׂה בְּגוֹי אֶחָד שֶׁבָּא לִפְנֵי שַׁמַּאי.
אָמַר לוֹ: גַּיְּירֵנִי עַל מְנָת שֶׁתְּלַמְּדֵנִי כׇּל הַתּוֹרָה כּוּלָּהּ כְּשֶׁאֲנִי עוֹמֵד עַל רֶגֶל אַחַת! דְּחָפוֹ בְּאַמַּת הַבִּנְיָן שֶׁבְּיָדוֹ.
בָּא לִפְנֵי הִלֵּל, גַּיְירֵיהּ. אָמַר לוֹ: דַּעֲלָךְ סְנֵי לְחַבְרָךְ לָא תַּעֲבֵיד — זוֹ הִיא כׇּל הַתּוֹרָה כּוּלָּהּ, וְאִידַּךְ פֵּירוּשַׁהּ הוּא, זִיל גְּמוֹר.
There was another incident involving one gentile who came before Shammai and said to Shammai: Convert me on condition that you teach me the entire Torah while I am standing on one foot. Shammai shoved him away with the builder’s cubit in his hand.
The same gentile came before Hillel. He converted him and said to him: “That which is hateful to you do not do to another. That is the entire Torah, and the rest is its interpretation. Go study.”

They continued to marry one another

ת"ש אע"פ שאלו אוסרים ואלו מתירים לא נמנעו ב"ש מלישא נשים מב"ה ולא ב"ה מב"ש
Although in some cases these permit and these prohibit, Beit Shammai did not refrain from marrying women from Beit Hillel, nor did Beit Hillel refrain from marrying women from Beit Shammai.
אלו ואלו דברי אלקים חיים שאלו רבני צרפת ז״ל היאך אפשר שיהו אלו ואלו דברי אלקים חים וזה איסר וזה מתיר
ותרצו כי כשעלה משה למרום לקבל התורה הראו לן על כל דבר ודבר מ״ט פנים לאיסור ומ״ט פני׳ להיתר
ושאל להקב״ה על זה ואמר שיהא זה מסור לחכמי ישראל שבכל דור ודור ויהיה הכרעה כמותם ונכון הוא לפי הדרש ובדרך האמת יש טעם סוד בדבר.
So who decides?
Ritva (Rabbi Yom Tov ben Avraham Asevilli (Commentary on Eruvin 13b
The Rabbis of France [i.e. the Tosafists] asked: How can it be that both of them spoke the words of the Living G-d, yet one side said [for example, an object is] forbidden and one said it is permissible?
They resolved it by noting that when Moshe went up to the heights to receive the Torah, he was shown 49 reasons why something is permissible, and 49 reasons why it is forbidden.
He asked the Holy One about this, and was told that the decision is left to the sages of Israel in every generation, and the ruling will be as they decide
