(1) Comfort, oh comfort My people,
Says your God.
דַּבְּר֞וּ עַל־לֵ֤ב יְרוּשָׁלַ֙͏ִם֙ וְקִרְא֣וּ אֵלֶ֔יהָ כִּ֤י מָֽלְאָה֙ צְבָאָ֔הּ כִּ֥י נִרְצָ֖ה עֲוֺנָ֑הּ כִּ֤י לָֽקְחָה֙ מִיַּ֣ד יהוה כִּפְלַ֖יִם בְּכׇל־חַטֹּאתֶֽיהָ׃ {ס}
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,And declare to herThat her term of service is over,That her iniquity is expiated;For she has received at the hand of GOD’s hand
Double for all her sins.
A voice rings out:“Clear in the desertA road for GOD !
Level in the wildernessA highway for our God!
Let every valley be raised,Every hill and mount made low.Let the rugged ground become levelAnd the ridges become a plain.
וְנִגְלָ֖ה כְּב֣וֹד יהוה וְרָא֤וּ כׇל־בָּשָׂר֙ יַחְדָּ֔ו כִּ֛י פִּ֥י יהוה דִּבֵּֽר׃ {פ}
The Presence of GOD shall appear,
And all flesh, as one, shall behold—For GOD has spoken.”
A voice rings out: “Proclaim!”Another asks, “What shall I proclaim?”
“All flesh is grass,All its goodness like flowers of the field:
Grass withers, flowers fadeWhen the breath of GOD’s breath blows on them.
Indeed, people are but grass:
יָבֵ֥שׁ חָצִ֖יר נָ֣בֵֽל צִ֑יץ וּדְבַר־אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יָק֥וּם לְעוֹלָֽם׃ {ס}
Grass withers, flowers fade—But the word of our God is always fulfilled!”

Ascend a lofty mountain,O herald of joy to Zion;Raise your voice with power,O herald of joy to Jerusalem—Raise it, have no fear;Announce to the cities of Judah:Behold your God!
Behold, my Sovereign GOD comes in might—
Whose arm wins triumph;See, [God] has brought along the reward,The recompense is in view.
כְּרֹעֶה֙ עֶדְר֣וֹ יִרְעֶ֔ה בִּזְרֹעוֹ֙ יְקַבֵּ֣ץ טְלָאִ֔ים וּבְחֵיק֖וֹ יִשָּׂ֑א עָל֖וֹת יְנַהֵֽל׃ {ס}
Like a shepherd who pastures the flock,[God] gathers up the lambsAnd carries them in the divine bosom,While gently driving the mother sheep.

Who measured the waters with a hand’s hollow,And gauged the skies with a span,And meted earth’s dust with a measure,And weighed the mountains with a scaleAnd the hills with a balance?
Who has plumbed the mind of GOD ?
Can anyone disclose God’s plan?

Whom did [God] consult, and who bestowed understanding,Providing guidance in the way of right?Who guided [God] in knowledgeAnd made known the path of wisdom?

The nations are but a drop in a bucket,Reckoned as dust on a balance;The very coastlands are lifted like motes.
וּלְבָנ֕וֹן אֵ֥ין דֵּ֖י בָּעֵ֑ר וְחַ֨יָּת֔וֹ אֵ֥ין דֵּ֖י עוֹלָֽה׃ {פ}
Lebanon is not fuel enough,Nor its beasts enough for sacrifice.
All nations are as naught in God’s sight,Who accounts them as less than nothing.

The idol? A woodworker shaped it,And a smith overlaid it with gold,Forging links of silver.

As a gift, someone chooses the mulberry —
A wood that does not rot—Then seeks a skillful woodworkerTo make a firm idol,That will not topple.

It is [God] who is enthroned above the vault of the earth,So that its inhabitants seem as grasshoppers;Who spread out the skies like gauze,Stretched them out like a tent to dwell in—

Hardly are they planted,Hardly are they sown,Hardly has their stemTaken root in earth,When [God] blows upon them and they dry up,And the storm bears them off like straw.

And as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,So will your God rejoice over you.
Upon your walls, O Jerusalem,I have set sentries,Who shall never be silentBy day or by night.O you, the ETERNAL One’s remembrancers,
Take no rest
And give no rest to [God],Until Jerusalem is establishedAnd she is made renowned on earth.
GOD has sworn with the divine right hand,
With a mighty arm:Nevermore will I give your new grainTo your enemies for food,Nor shall foreigners drink the new wineFor which you have labored.
כִּ֤י מְאַסְפָיו֙ יֹאכְלֻ֔הוּ וְהִֽלְל֖וּ אֶת־יהוה וּמְקַבְּצָ֥יו יִשְׁתֻּ֖הוּ בְּחַצְר֥וֹת קׇדְשִֽׁי׃ {ס}
But those who harvest it shall eat itAnd give praise to GOD;
And those who gather it shall drink itIn My sacred courts.
Pass through, pass through the gates!Clear the road for the people;Build up, build up the highway,Remove the rocks!Raise an ensign over the peoples!
See, GOD has proclaimed
To the end of the earth:Announce to Fair Zion,Your Deliverer is coming!See, [God] has brought along the reward,The recompense is in view.
וְקָרְא֥וּ לָהֶ֛ם עַם־הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ גְּאוּלֵ֣י יהוה וְלָךְ֙ יִקָּרֵ֣א דְרוּשָׁ֔ה עִ֖יר לֹ֥א נֶעֱזָֽבָה׃ {ס}
And they shall be called, “The Holy People,GOD’s Redeemed,”And you shall be called, “Sought Out,A City Not Forsaken.”
Who is this coming from Edom,In crimsoned garments from Bozrah—Who is this, majestic in attire,Pressing forward with great might?
“It is I, who contend victoriously,Powerful to give triumph.”
Why is your clothing so red,Your garments like those of someone who treads grapes?
“I trod out a vintage alone;Of the peoples nobody was with Me.
I trod them down in My anger,Trampled them in My rage;Their life-blood bespattered My garments,
And all My clothing was stained.
For I had planned a day of vengeance,And My year of redemption arrived.
Then I looked, but there was none to help;I stared, but there was none to aid—So My own arm wrought the triumph,And My own rage was My aid.
וְאָב֤וּס עַמִּים֙ בְּאַפִּ֔י וַאֲשַׁכְּרֵ֖ם בַּחֲמָתִ֑י וְאוֹרִ֥יד לָאָ֖רֶץ נִצְחָֽם׃ {ס}
I trampled peoples in My anger,I made them drunk with My rage,
And I hurled their glory to the ground.”
I will recount GOD’s kind acts, GOD’s—
For all that GOD has wrought for us,
The vast bounty to the House of IsraelThat was bestowed upon themAccording to God’s mercy and great kindness.
[God] thought: Surely they are My people,Children who will not play false.So [God] was their Deliverer.
In all their troubles [God] was troubled,And the angel of the divine Presence delivered them.In love and pityIt was [God] who redeemed them,Raised them, and exalted themAll the days of old.
