(ב) וַיִּקָּהֲלוּ אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹה כָּל אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּיֶרַח הָאֵתָנִים בֶּחָג הוּא הַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי.
(2) And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the festival, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.
(לד) דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר בַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי הַזֶּה חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת שִׁבְעַת יָמִים לַה'...
(לט) אַךְ בַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי בְּאָסְפְּכֶם אֶת תְּבוּאַת הָאָרֶץ תָּחֹגּוּ אֶת חַג ה' שִׁבְעַת יָמִים בַּיּוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן שַׁבָּתוֹן וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי שַׁבָּתוֹן...
(מא) וְחַגֹּתֶם אֹתוֹ חַג לַה' שִׁבְעַת יָמִים בַּשָּׁנָה חֻקַּת עוֹלָם לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי תָּחֹגּוּ אֹתוֹ.
(34) Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the festival of tabernacles for seven days unto the L-ORD...
(39) Howbeit on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruits of the land, ye shall keep the festival of the L-ORD seven days; on the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest...
(41) And ye shall keep it a festival unto the L-ORD seven days in the year; it is a statute for ever in your generations; ye shall keep it in the seventh month.
(סה) וַיַּעַשׂ שְׁלֹמֹה בָעֵת הַהִיא אֶת הֶחָג וְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל עִמּוֹ קָהָל גָּדוֹל מִלְּבוֹא חֲמָת עַד נַחַל מִצְרַיִם לִפְנֵי ה' אֱלֹהֵינוּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְשִׁבְעַת יָמִים אַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר יוֹם.
(סו) בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי שִׁלַּח אֶת הָעָם וַיְבָרֲכוּ אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיֵּלְכוּ לְאָהֳלֵיהֶם שְׂמֵחִים וְטוֹבֵי לֵב עַל כָּל הַטּוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה ה' לְדָוִד עַבְדּוֹ וּלְיִשְׂרָאֵל עַמּוֹ.
(65) So Solomon held the festival at that time, and all Israel with him, a great congregation, from the entrance Hamath unto the Brook of Egypt, before the L-ORD our G-d, seven days and seven days, even fourteen days.
(66) On the eighth day he sent the people away, and they blessed the king, and went unto their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the L-ORD had shown unto David His servant, and to Israel His people.
(כו) וַתְּהִי שִׂמְחָה גְדוֹלָה בִּירוּשָׁלִָם כִּי מִימֵי שְׁלֹמֹה בֶן דָּוִיד מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא כָזֹאת בִּירוּשָׁלִָם.
(26) So there was great joy in Jerusalem; for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem.
(כו) וַיֹּאמֶר יָרָבְעָם בְּלִבּוֹ עַתָּה תָּשׁוּב הַמַּמְלָכָה לְבֵית דָּוִד. (כז) אִם יַעֲלֶה הָעָם הַזֶּה לַעֲשׂוֹת זְבָחִים בְּבֵית ה' בִּירוּשָׁלִַם וְשָׁב לֵב הָעָם הַזֶּה אֶל אֲדֹנֵיהֶם אֶל רְחַבְעָם מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה וַהֲרָגֻנִי וְשָׁבוּ אֶל רְחַבְעָם מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה.
(26) And Jeroboam said in his heart: ‘Now will the kingdom return to the house of David. (27) If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the L-ORD at Jerusalem, then will the heart of this people turn back unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.’
(לב) וַיַּעַשׂ יָרָבְעָם חָג בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁמִינִי בַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ כֶּחָג אֲשֶׁר בִּיהוּדָה וַיַּעַל עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ כֵּן עָשָׂה בְּבֵית אֵל לְזַבֵּחַ לָעֲגָלִים אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה וְהֶעֱמִיד בְּבֵית אֵל אֶת כֹּהֲנֵי הַבָּמוֹת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה. (לג) וַיַּעַל עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה בְּבֵית אֵל בַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר יוֹם בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁמִינִי בַּחֹדֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר בָּדָא מלבד [מִלִּבּוֹ] וַיַּעַשׂ חָג לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּעַל עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ לְהַקְטִיר.
(32) And Jeroboam ordained a festival in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the festival that is in Judah, and he went up unto the altar; so did he in Beth-el, to sacrifice unto the calves that he had made; and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places that he had made. (33) And he went up unto the altar which he had made in Beth-el on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a festival for the children of Israel, and went up unto the altar, to offer.
(לד) ...מעשה בגוי אחד ששאל את רבי עקיבא, ואמר לו, למה אתם עושים מועדים. לא כך אמר לכם הקדוש ברוך הוא, חדשיכם ומועדיכם שנאה נפשי (ישעי' א יד). אמר לו רבי עקיבא, אילו אמר, חדשי ומועדי, הייתי אומר כך. אלא אמר, חדשיכם ומועדיכם. (אלא) בשביל אותם מועדות שעשה ירבעם, שנאמר, ויעש ירבעם חג בחדש השמיני בחמשה עשר יום לחדש כחג אשר ביהודה ויעל על המזבח כן עשה בבית אל לזבח לעגלים וגו', ויעש חג לבני ישראל (מ"א יב לב-לג). אבל המועדים האלה, אינן בטלים לעולם, ולא החדשים. למה. שהם להקדוש ברוך הוא, שנאמר, אלה מועדי ה' (ויק' כג ד). וכתיב, וידבר משה את מועדי ה' (שם שם מד). ולכך אינם בטלים לעולם...
Once a non-Jew asked Rabbi Akiva: Why do you observe holidays? Doesn't Hashem tell you "Your months and your holidays, I hate" (Isaiah 1:14). Rabbi Akiva said to him: If it had said "My months and My holidays," I would also have said that. The holidays [referred to in Isaiah] are the holidays of Jeroboam, as it says; "And Jeroboam ordained a festival in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he went up unto the altar; so did he in Beth-el, to sacrifice unto the calves that he had made; and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places that he had made....and he ordained a festival for the children of Israel" (I Kings 12:32-33). But these holidays are everlasting, not the months. Why? Holidays are for G-d, as it says "These are the holidays of Hashem" (Leviticus 23:4) and "And Moses told of G-d's holidays" (Leviticus 23:44)- these ones are everlasting.
(יא) בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא אָקִים אֶת סֻכַּת דָּוִיד הַנֹּפֶלֶת וְגָדַרְתִּי אֶת פִּרְצֵיהֶן וַהֲרִסֹתָיו אָקִים וּבְנִיתִיהָ כִּימֵי עוֹלָם.
(טז) וְהָיָה כָּל הַנּוֹתָר מִכָּל הַגּוֹיִם הַבָּאִים עַל יְרוּשָׁלִָם וְעָלוּ מִדֵּי שָׁנָה בְשָׁנָה לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֹת לְמֶלֶךְ ה' צְבָאוֹת וְלָחֹג אֶת חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת.
