Rebellion to Tyrants & Obedience to G-d: Torah and the American Founding
Pt. I: No King Besides You
Benjamin Franklin, "Proposal for the Great Seal of the United States," 1776
Moses standing on the Shore, and extending his Hand over the Sea, thereby causing the same to overwhelm Pharoah who is sitting in an open Chariot, a Crown on his Head and a Sword in his hand. Rays from a Pillar of Fire in the Clouds reaching to Moses, to express that he acts by Command of the Deity. Motto, Rebellion to Tyrants Is Obedience to G[-]d
Benson J. Lossing, Illustration for Harper's New Monthly Magazine in July 1856

(17) The midwives, fearing G-d, did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.

Thomas Paine, Common Sense, 1776
[The] will of the Almighty as declared by Gideon, and the prophet Samuel, expressly disapproves of government by Kings... Near three thousand years passed away, from the Mosaic account of the creation, till the Jews under a national delusion requested a king. Till then their form of government (except in extraordinary cases where the Almighty interposed) was a kind of Republic, administered by a judge and the elders of the tribes. Kings they had none, and it was held sinful to acknowledge any being under that title but the L[-]rd of Hosts. And when a man seriously reflects on the idolatrous homage which is paid to the persons of kings, he need not wonder that the Almighty, ever jealous of his honour, should disapprove a form of government which so impiously invades the prerogative of Heaven.

(22) Then Israel’s side said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son, and your grandson as well; for you have saved us from the Midianites.” (23) But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you myself, nor shall my son rule over you; Hashem alone shall rule over you.”

(7) and Hashem replied to Samuel, “Heed the demand of the people in everything they say to you. For it is not you that they have rejected; it is Me they have rejected as their king.

(12) But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was advancing against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king reigning over us’—though Hashem your G-d is your King.

(19) The people all said to Samuel, “Intercede for your servants with the Hashem your G-d that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins the wickedness of asking for a king.”

(3) Put not your trust in nobles, in mortal man who cannot save[...]
(5) Happy is he who has the G-d of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in Hashem his G-d,

(3) Our Father our King! we have no King except You.

Pt. II: How to be Free

And it says, “And the tablets were the work of G-d, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tablets” (Exodus 32:16). Read not haruth [‘graven’] but heruth [‘freedom’]. For there is no free man but one that occupies himself with the study of the Torah.

(14) And he said, "for there is no free man besides one who occupies himself with Torah": For even a king - who is a free man - is not called a free man, in comparison to one who occupies himself with Torah. And this is as they said (Avot 6:5), "And do not desire their tables [of kings] since your table is greater than their tables and your crown is greater than their crowns." For the king - even though he is a king - is afraid lest the people of his kingdom will rebel. And because of this, he is not a completely free man. As one is not called a free man except when there is no angle of a possibility of subjugation. And that is only found in Torah - that he is a completely free man, as we explained. For the intellect is free - subjugation is not applicable to it.

George Washington (with help from Hamilton and Madison) Farewell Address, 1796
Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.
John Adams to Massachusetts Militia, October 11, 1798
We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition Revenge or Galantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

(2) At the Exodus of Israel from Egypt, Rabbi Elazar HaKappar said that in the merit of four things, Israel went out of Egypt: they did not change their names, they did not change their language, they did not engage in immoral behavior, and they did not reveal secrets.

Part III: G-d Bless America

(7) And seek the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you and pray to Hashem in its behalf; for in its prosperity you shall prosper.

Emma Lazarus, "The New Colossus," 1883
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
The Lubavitcher Rebbe to President George HW Bush, August 13, 1991
By Divine Providence your kind letter was dated on the morrow of the anniversary of the Nation's birthday. It is well to remember that the founders of this Nation considered Independence Day as "a day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to G‑d Al-mighty."
John Adams to Abagail Adams, July 3, 1776
The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to G[-]d Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.
Irving Berlin (Yisroel Beilin), "G[-]d Bless America," 1938
G[-]d Bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her
And guide her
Through the night with a light from above
From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam
G[-] Bless America, my home sweet home
