Chayei Sara - Shabbat Morning Text Study November 26, 2016

וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵי֙ מ֣וֹת אַבְרָהָ֔ם וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֑וֹ...

And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed Isaac his son....

(ד) ויהי אחרי מות אברהם ויברך אלהים את יצחק בנו - אמר רבי סימון: בכל מקום, שנאמר: "ויהי" "אחרי", חזר העולם לאחוריו. ויהי אחרי מות אברהם, מיד וכל הבארות וגו' ויסתמום פלשתים אחרי מות אברהם. (יהושע א) ויהי אחרי מות משה עבד ה', מיד פסק הבאר וענני כבוד והמן. (שופטים א) ויהי אחרי מות יהושע, מיד נתגרו בהן יתידות הארץ. (שמואל ב ג) ויהי אחרי מות שאול, ופלשתים נלחמים בישראל. מתיבין חברייא לר' סימון: והכתיב (ד"ה ב כד): ואחרי מות יהוידע הכהן באו שרי יהודה וישתחוו למלך?! אמר רבי תנחומא: לא אתא ר' סימון למימר, אלא ויהי אחרי. אמר רבי יודן: אילולי שהעמיד הקדוש ברוך הוא אחרים תחתיהם, כבר חזר העולם לאחוריו, דכתיב: ויהי אחרי מות אברהם, וכתיב: וישב יצחק ויחפור. ויהי אחרי מות משה עבד ה' , ויאמר ה' אל יהושע בן נון משרת משה לאמר. וכתיב (שופטים א) ויהי אחרי מות יהושע, ויאמר ה' יהודה יעלה. כתיב (שמואל ב א) ויהי אחרי מות שאול, ודוד שב מהכות את העמלקי וישב דוד בצקלג ימים וגו'. וכתיב למעלה מן הענין, קודם מיתת שמואל (שם א טז): ודוד בן איש אפרתי:

Bereshit Rabbah 62:3

...R. Simon said: Wherever it says, 'And it came to pass after,' the world relapsed into its former state.... R. Judan said: Had not God set up others in their stead, the world would have relapsed into its former state.

What does "former state" mean? How do we understand this?

"After the death of" (Instead of "and it came to pass")
The Hebrew expression occurs nowhere else in the Torah but is again used in Joshua 1:1, Judges 1:1, and 2 Samuel 1:1 in connection with the passing of Moses, Joshua, and Saul, respectively. In each instance it indicates that a historic turning point has been reached; an era has come to an end, but the continuity of the leadership has been assured. (JPS)

"And it was after the death of Avraham." As long as Avraham was alive he stood foremost in his household, and all his affairs carried his stamp.... But after he died, Yizhaq took his place in all things....

It's natural that Isaac would take on the roll, but why is he blessed? What do we learn from that?

"Each great leader struggled valiantly to elevate the morality and godliness of the times, but as soon as the leader's efforts ceased, the world returned to its troubling ways....Even as the world reverted to its former condition, even then God 'blessed his son Isaac.' assuring a new generation of leadership to maintain and transmit the ways of Abraham and Sarah.... God gives each generation the wisdom and skill needed for the tasks at hand, but it is we who must supply the courage and the resolve."

My final comment:
It is our responsibility to stand up and take a role in leadership. We cannot just wait for it to be given to us or worry about what we may be able to accomplish in light of those who came before us. Instead, we have to take a chance and keep moving forward. We can't hope someone else will take it over -- or even wait for a blessing.
As leaders, it is also our responsibility to pass on the roles to the next generation with the tools that they can use to continue the work -- otherwise we will relapse into a former state.
