What happen(ed/s) at Mt. Sinai? Shavuot 2023 @ Kehillah Jewish High School
(8) All those assembled answered as one, saying, “All that God has spoken we will do!”... (16) On the third day, as morning dawned, there was thunder, and lightning, and a dense cloud upon the mountain, and a very loud blast of the horn; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.(17) Moses led the people out of the camp toward God, and they took their places at the "underneath" of the mountain.
and they stood at the lowermost part of the mount” (Exodus 19:17). Rabbi Avdimi bar Ḥama bar Ḥasa said: the Jewish people actually stood beneath the mountain, and the verse teaches that the Holy One, Blessed be He, overturned the mountain above them like a tub, and said to them: If you accept the Torah, good, and if not, there will be your burial.
AT THE NETHER PART OF THE MOUNTAIN — According to its literal meaning this signifies “at the foot of the mountain”. But a Midrashic explanation is, that the mountain was plucked up from its place and was arched over them as a cask, so that they were standing b'tachtit-בתחתית beneath (under) the mountain itself (Mekhilta d'Rabbi Yishmael 19:17:2; Shabbat 88a).
All the people saw the thunders and lightnings, the blare of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they fell back and stood from afar.
[THEY] SAW THE SOUNDS — they saw that which should be heard (Mekhilta d'Rabbi Yishmael 20:15:1) — something which is impossible to see on any other occasion.
(Ibid. 20:15) "And all the people saw the sounds and the lightnings": They saw what was visible and heard what was audible. These are the words of R. Yishmael. R. Akiva says: They saw and heard what was audible. There was nothing that left the mouth of the Omnipotent which was not inscribed on the tablets, as it is written (Psalms 29:7) "The voice of the L rd hews (with) flames of fire."
Overturned the mountain above them like a tub: And even though they had already first said, "We will do," before, "and we will hear" - perhaps they would retract when they would see the great fire [on the mountain]
It was not with our ancestors that יהוה made this covenant, but with us, the living, every one of us who is here today.
NOT WITH OUR FATHERS — i.e. not with them alone, DID THE LORD MAKE [THIS COVENANT], כי אתנו BUT WITH US etc.
