Dive Deep Into the True Qualities of Izevel
Izevel has a complex personality throughout the parts of Tanach she appears in. The source sheet is built in a way where one can learn about the different qualities Izevel had. Izevel had both positive and negative attributes that are discussed within this hseet. Dive deep into her character!
(31) Not content to follow the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, he took as wife Jezebel daughter of King Ethbaal of the Phoenicians, and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.

The first time Izevel is mentioned in all of Tanach is in this pasuk. The pasuk describes how Izevel is being taken as wife by Achav. After it says that Achav took Izevel as a wife it says he went and worshipped the Baal. Does Izevel influence or encourage Achav to engage with avodah zara?

(1) Izevel, the daughter of Etba"al king of the Tzidonim and the wife of Achav, at the first time that she was brought before Achav taught him the ways of idol worshippers and because of her he was brought to become an idolater.

This midrash gives us a deep understanding into the character of Izevel: from here we learn that Izevel was an extremely influential person. Within the first year of Izevel being in Achav's house, Achav began to worship idols. He learned about idolatry from Izevel, she was the one to teach him. This commentary from Tanya Debbie Eliyahu Rabbah 9 seems to suggest that Achav only did avodah zara because he was under Izevel’s influence. She was the drive behind Achav straying from the ways of Hashem.

Izevel must have also been influenced to do avodah zara . Who caused Izevel to be such an idol worshipper that she influenced others?

Izevel was the daughter of an idol serving priest and she had 70 sons. Izevel learned her beliefs from her father's house and that is what led her to pass her beliefs on.

Since Izevel did not believe in Hashem and His prophets, she took those strong beliefs and killed the prophets of Hashem.

(4) When Jezebel was killing off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and provided them with food and drink.)

We see from this pasuk that Izevel was strong in her beliefs and only believed in avodah zara. As a way to show her strong beliefs, and eliminate anyone who preached Judaism and helped the Jews, she killed those who were against avodah zara and those who worshipped Hashem. This shows the evil and wicked person that she was. She was intolerant to the Jews, whose religion she did not believe in, and in her evil ways decided to kill all of the prophets of Hashem, the Jewish G-d.

(1) When Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done and how he had put all the prophets to the sword, (2) Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “Thus and more may the gods do-b if by this time tomorrow I have not made you like one of them.”

The Midrash Shmuel points out a positive action of Izevel’s. When Izevel wanted to kill Eliyahu, she sent him a warning first, which gave him a chance to flee.

There is still something positive to learn from Izevel’s actions even though they were mostly evil, as seen by her death threat to Eliyahu. There is a silver lining that can be seen from Izevel’s death threat. She gave Eliyahu the opportunity to flee and run away from her so that she would not have to kill him. She was generous in this way, and although she did give him a death threat, she allowed him to get away, and thus essentially saved him from being murdered.

Why did Izevel not kill Eliyahu right away? She saw that at this point Achav thought that Eliyahu was a Tzadik and that Achav beilieved him. Izevel waited till the night to turn Achav to his evil ways.

Izevel continues to have a huge influence on Achav. Izevel knew that she could turn him back to his evil ways. This proves that Izevel was the reason for Achav being evil. She was so wicked and persuasive that she continued to influence Achav to do bad. When she knew that Achav was believing in Hashem, she instantly knew that she could influence him to return back to his evil ways. Through the fact that it is she who is returning him to his evil ways, it must be that she is evil and was the original one who turned him to evil in the first place.

(5) His wife Jezebel came to him and asked him, “Why are you so dispirited that you won’t eat?”

From this passuk we see that Izevel cares deeply about her husband. She notices that he won't eat because he is upset about something. Izevel learns that the reason Achav was upset was because Navot would not give him his vineyard. Izevel made it her mission to get this vineyard for Achav. This situation shows a positive trait of Izelvel. She truly did care for Achav and she was willing to do what it took to make him happy.

(7) His wife Jezebel said to him, “Now is the time to show yourself king over Israel. Rise and eat something, and be cheerful; I will get the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite for you.”

She said when they were establishing a royal house in a country where they still didn't have a king, the royal court and its laws are established between them (between the nation and the king), they specify what the king can and cannot do. Not so in the old kingdom is it like this—rather, the kind does whatever he may wish to do. He has the power.

From this one can determine that Izevel cares not only about her husband Achav, but also about the kingship in general. She is telling Achav that he must take charge and take action now, because Navot has went against him and he must show Navot that he is in power. Izevel cares about power, as seen from this Pasuk.

(8) So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who lived in the same town with Naboth.

We see from here that Izevel was a planner and she made sure that her desires were achieved. She wrote all the letters in Achav's name and she signed the letter with the ring of the King. This also shows that she was the one controlling Achav—she sent the letters in his name, and it was she who devised a plan to kill Navot.

(9) In the letters she wrote as follows: “Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the front of the assembly.

Izevel called for a fast because she knew that would lead to a gathering and that is exactly what she wanted. This shows that Izevel was conniving and smart. She knew that when everyone would gather she would have witnesses to prove that Navot was guilty, and therefore he could be killed, and Achav would be able to receive the vineyard. Izevel devised a well thought out plan in order to get the vineyard from Navot. She was smart and knew how to plan well, but she used these attributes to do evil.

(ל) וַיָּב֥וֹא יֵה֖וּא יִזְרְעֶ֑אלָה וְאִיזֶ֣בֶל שָֽׁמְעָ֗ה וַתָּ֨שֶׂם בַּפּ֤וּךְ עֵינֶ֙יהָ֙ וַתֵּ֣יטֶב אֶת־רֹאשָׁ֔הּ וַתַּשְׁקֵ֖ף בְּעַ֥ד הַחַלּֽוֹן׃ (לא) וְיֵה֖וּא בָּ֣א בַשָּׁ֑עַר וַתֹּ֣אמֶר הֲשָׁל֔וֹם זִמְרִ֖י הֹרֵ֥ג אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ (לב) וַיִּשָּׂ֤א פָנָיו֙ אֶל־הַ֣חַלּ֔וֹן וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מִ֥י אִתִּ֖י מִ֑י וַיַּשְׁקִ֣יפוּ אֵלָ֔יו שְׁנַ֥יִם שְׁלֹשָׁ֖ה סָרִיסִֽים׃ (לג) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (שמטהו) [שִׁמְט֖וּהָ] וַֽיִּשְׁמְט֑וּהָ וַיִּ֨ז מִדָּמָ֧הּ אֶל־הַקִּ֛יר וְאֶל־הַסּוּסִ֖ים וַֽיִּרְמְסֶֽנָּה׃ (לד) וַיָּבֹ֖א וַיֹּ֣אכַל וַיֵּ֑שְׁתְּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר פִּקְדוּ־נָ֞א אֶת־הָאֲרוּרָ֤ה הַזֹּאת֙ וְקִבְר֔וּהָ כִּ֥י בַת־מֶ֖לֶךְ הִֽיא׃ (לה) וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ לְקׇבְרָ֑הּ וְלֹא־מָ֣צְאוּ בָ֗הּ כִּ֧י אִם־הַגֻּלְגֹּ֛לֶת וְהָרַגְלַ֖יִם וְכַפּ֥וֹת הַיָּדָֽיִם׃ (לו) וַיָּשֻׁבוּ֮ וַיַּגִּ֣ידוּ לוֹ֒ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֣ה ה֔וּא אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֗ר בְּיַד־עַבְדּ֛וֹ אֵלִיָּ֥הוּ הַתִּשְׁבִּ֖י לֵאמֹ֑ר בְּחֵ֣לֶק יִזְרְעֶ֔אל יֹאכְל֥וּ הַכְּלָבִ֖ים אֶת־בְּשַׂ֥ר אִיזָֽבֶל׃ (לז) (והית) [וְֽהָיְתָ֞ה] נִבְלַ֣ת אִיזֶ֗בֶל כְּדֹ֛מֶן עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה בְּחֵ֣לֶק יִזְרְעֶ֑אל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יֹאמְר֖וּ זֹ֥את אִיזָֽבֶל׃ {ס}
(30) Jehu went on to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard of it, she painted her eyes with kohl and dressed her hair, and she looked out of the window. (31) As Jehu entered the gate, she called out, “Is all well, Zimri, murderer of your master?” (32) He looked up toward the window and said, “Who is on my side, who?” And two or three eunuchs leaned out toward him. (33) “Throw her down,” he said. They threw her down; and her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled her. (34) Then he went inside and ate and drank. And he said, “Attend to that cursed woman and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.” (35) So they went to bury her; but all they found of her were the skull, the feet, and the hands. (36) They came back and reported to him; and he said, “It is just as the LORD spoke through His servant Elijah the Tishbite: The dogs shall devour the flesh of Jezebel in the field of Jezreel; (37) and the carcass of Jezebel shall be like dung on the ground, in the field of Jezreel, so that none will be able to say: ‘This was Jezebel.’”

(5) Whence do we learn (the duty of) showing loving-kindness to mourners? From Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal. The palace of Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal, was near the market-place. When any corpse was carried through the market-place, she would go forth from her palace, and she clapped with the palms of her hands and praised with her mouth, and she followed the corpse ten steps. Concerning her, Elijah, be he remembered for good, prophesied (and said): "In the portion of Jezreel shall the dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel" (2 Kings 9:36). But over the limbs which were (employed in) showing loving-kindness, the dogs had no power, as it is said, "And they went || to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands" (2 Kings 9:35).

Although throughout numerous perakim and pesukim the readers are shown the devious traits of Izevel we see that Izevel did have kind traits as well. Her actions of clapping for a bride and groom and walking behind the body of a dead person. These positive traits of Izevel are the traits that led Hashem to spare her. The parts of her body that did kindness were not destroyed by the dogs.

Key Takeawyas:

1. Izevel was manipulative, calculated, and evil person. She caused Achav to be an idol worshipper and she caused many people from Bnei Yisroel to lose a connection with Hashem.

2. Izevel cared tremendously for Achav. She also brought happiness to newlyweds and respected those who passed away by walking behind them. These were all positive traits of Izevel and it shows that she was not entirely bad.

We learn from this that every character in Tanach is complex. There were bad people who did good things, but there were also those who were good and sinned as well. We see from Izevel that Hashem rewards and punishes those according to their actions. Izevel was killed because of her evilness, but parts of her body were spared because of her kindness.
