Parashat Behar Summary
- Outlines laws of shmita, the last year in the 7-year cycle when the land is left untilled.
- Also outlines laws of yovel, the last year in a 50-year cycle when the land reverts to original owners. The original owners are the families who were allotted land the after the conquest of Canaan.
- Dwellings in walled cities are an exception. They can only be redeemed within a year of purchase and otherwise stay with the purchaser in perpetuity.
- Levi-controlled areas are another exception, can only be redeemed by Levites.
Parashat Bechukotai Summary
- G-d promises peace, healthy crop yields, and all sorts of good things to the Israelites as long as they obey G-d's laws.
- G-d also promises a terrifying reversal of fortune if the Israelites disobey the laws. These become more extreme the more Israelites disobey (e.g. Leviticus 26:29 - "You shall eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters").
- The laws of yovel are very much part of this, and G-d even says that the land will "rest and make up for its sabbath years" (Leviticus 26:34) when Israelites are scattered by their enemies.

(2) Speak to the Israelite people and say to them: When you enter the land that I assign to you, the land shall observe a sabbath of יהוה.(3) Six years you may sow your field and six years you may prune your vineyard and gather in the yield.(4) But in the seventh year the land shall have a sabbath of complete rest, a sabbath of יהוה: you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.(5) You shall not reap the aftergrowth of your harvest or gather the grapes of your untrimmed vines; it shall be a year of complete rest for the land.(6) But you may eat whatever the land during its sabbath will produce—you, your male and female slaves, the hired and bound laborers who live with you,(7) and your cattle and the beasts in your land may eat all its yield.
לך ולעבדך ולאמתך. לְפִי שֶׁנֶאֱמַר וְאָכְלוּ אֶבְיֹנֵי עַמֶּךָ (שמות כ"ג), יָכוֹל יִהְיוּ אֲסוּרִים בַּאֲכִילָה לָעֲשִׁירִים, תַּ"לֹ לְךָ וּלְעַבְדְּךָ וְלַאֲמָתֶךָ, הֲרֵי בְעָלִים וַעֲבָדִים וּשְׁפָחוֹת אֲמוּרִים כָּאן (ספרא):
לך ולעבדך ולאמתך [AND THE SABBATH OF THE LAND SHALL BE FOOD FOR YOU]; FOR THEE, FOR THY SERVANT, AND FOR THY MAID SERVANT — Because it states (Exodus 23:11) “[but in the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still]; that the needy of thy people may eat”, one might think that they (the fruits of the Sabbatical year) are forbidden as food for the rich (and thus also for the owner of the field and his household), Scripture therefore states here: “[it shall be for food for thee,] for thy servant, and for thy maid servant” — thus you have the mention of the owners (the rich) here as well as of the servants and the maid servants — the poor (Sifra, Behar, Chapter 1 6).

(11) That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you: you shall not sow, neither shall you reap the aftergrowth or harvest the untrimmed vines,(12) for it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you: you may only eat the growth direct from the field.(13) In this year of jubilee, each of you shall return to your holding.(14) When you sell property to your neighbor, or buy any from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one another.(15) In buying from your neighbor, you shall deduct only for the number of years since the jubilee; and in selling to you, that person shall charge you only for the remaining crop years:(16) the more such years, the higher the price you pay; the fewer such years, the lower the price; for what is being sold to you is a number of harvests.(17) Do not wrong one another, but fear your God; for I יהוה am your God.
In Lev. 25:12, we read, "For it is a yovel, it shall be a holy thing to you," Ki yovel hi, kodesh tihiye lachem. This can also be translated, "She is a yovel to you, she shall be a holy entity to you." G-d is our Yovel, the ultimate sabbath on which we rest, the place where we do not need to produce anything, but are accepted as we are.

(25) If one of your kin is in straits and has to sell part of a holding, the nearest redeemer shall come and redeem what that relative has sold.(26) If any party has no one to be redeemer but prospers and acquires enough to redeem with,(27) the years since its sale shall be computed and the difference shall be refunded to the party to whom it was sold, so that the person returns to that holding.(28) If that person lacks sufficient means to recover it, what was sold shall remain with the purchaser until the jubilee; in the jubilee year it shall be released, so that the person returns to that holding.

(29) If any party sells a dwelling house in a walled city, it may be redeemed until a year has elapsed since its sale; the redemption period shall be a year.(30) If it is not redeemed before a full year has elapsed, the house in the walled city shall pass to the purchaser beyond reclaim throughout the ages; it shall not be released in the jubilee.(31) But houses in villages that have no encircling walls shall be classed as open country: they may be redeemed, and they shall be released through the jubilee.

(35) If your kin, being in straits, come under your authority, and are held by you as though resident aliens, let them live by your side:(36) do not exact advance or accrued interest, but fear your God. Let your kin live by your side as such.(37) Do not lend your money at advance interest, nor give your food at accrued interest.
(לט) וְכִֽי־יָמ֥וּךְ אָחִ֛יךָ עִמָּ֖ךְ וְנִמְכַּר־לָ֑ךְ לֹא־תַעֲבֹ֥ד בּ֖וֹ עֲבֹ֥דַת עָֽבֶד׃(מ) כְּשָׂכִ֥יר כְּתוֹשָׁ֖ב יִהְיֶ֣ה עִמָּ֑ךְ עַד־שְׁנַ֥ת הַיֹּבֵ֖ל יַעֲבֹ֥ד עִמָּֽךְ׃(מא) וְיָצָא֙ מֵֽעִמָּ֔ךְ ה֖וּא וּבָנָ֣יו עִמּ֑וֹ וְשָׁב֙ אֶל־מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֔וֹ וְאֶל־אֲחֻזַּ֥ת אֲבֹתָ֖יו יָשֽׁוּב׃(מב) כִּֽי־עֲבָדַ֣י הֵ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־הוֹצֵ֥אתִי אֹתָ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם לֹ֥א יִמָּכְר֖וּ מִמְכֶּ֥רֶת עָֽבֶד׃(מג) לֹא־תִרְדֶּ֥ה ב֖וֹ בְּפָ֑רֶךְ וְיָרֵ֖אתָ מֵאֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃
(39) If your kin under you continue in straits and must be given over to you, do not subject them to the treatment of a slave.(40) Remaining with you as a hired or bound laborer, they shall serve with you only until the jubilee year.(41) Then they, along with any children, shall be free of your authority; they shall go back to their family and return to the ancestral holding.—(42) For they are My servants, whom I freed from the land of Egypt; they may not give themselves over into servitude.—(43) You shall not rule over them ruthlessly; you shall fear your God.
Acknowledging the existence of economic oppression, of foreclosures and slavery [Parashat Behar] assails the existence of these de facto realities on the most radical of bases: the land belongs to G-d, so it is not yours to sell, no matter how dire your economic straits. And since the Israelites are G-d's servants, they cannot sell themselves into permanent slavery. This text itself serves to queer the economic and social status quo in ancient Israel.
[...] Alas, our text can only be stretched so far, because it rests on another norm--the ancient division of the land of Israel into tribal holdings that it regards as permanent and divinely ordained. It presumes that all Israelites descend from those who settled the land after the conquest of Canaan, when the land of each of the tribes was neatly divided among members of the tribe. [...] The Jubilee offers nothing to those who do not fit into an accepted, ancient category [...] Like all utopian visions, it rests on its own assumptions of what is ideal.

(44) Such male and female slaves as you may have—it is from the nations round about you that you may acquire male and female slaves.(45) You may also buy them from among the children of aliens resident among you, or from their families that are among you, whom they begot in your land. These shall become your property:(46) you may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property for all time. Such you may treat as slaves. But as for your Israelite kin, no one shall rule ruthlessly over another.
Ruth, the stranger who must glean from the fields, is the quintessential model of a woman who does not lose her dignity or her destiny because she is poor and a stranger. Ruth refers to herself as an amah, a maidservant, when speaking to Boaz (Ruth 3:9), the same word that we find in Parashat Behar, and she epitomizes both the vulnerability and the strength of such a woman. Ruth's poverty is brought on by the loss of her husband and father-in-law, a situation that demonstrates why poverty has always been a women's issue, especially in societies that demand that women be economically dependent upon men. Yet, [...] although she is a widow and a foreigner, she becomes the ancestress of a king--her societal position is literally reversed. Ruth, as viewed through the eyes of Parashat Behar, is the yovel model of a woman[.]

(41) When I, in turn, have been hostile to them and have removed them into the land of their enemies, then at last shall their obdurate heart humble itself, and they shall atone for their iniquity.(42) Then will I remember My covenant with Jacob; I will remember also My covenant with Isaac, and also My covenant with Abraham; and I will remember the land.(43) For the land shall be forsaken of them, making up for its sabbath years by being desolate of them, while they atone for their iniquity; for the abundant reason that they rejected My rules and spurned My laws.
