Hol Hamo'ed Shabbat Pesach 5783
וְאָמַר רַב שֵׁשֶׁת מִשּׁוּם רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן עֲזַרְיָה: כׇּל הַמְבַזֶּה אֶת הַמּוֹעֲדוֹת כְּאִילּוּ עוֹבֵד עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״אֱלֹהֵי מַסֵּכָה לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ״, וּכְתִיב בָּתְרֵיהּ: ״אֶת חַג הַמַּצּוֹת תִּשְׁמוֹר״.
After citing a statement of Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya that was transmitted by amora’im, the Gemara quotes additional expositions attributed to him. And Rav Sheshet said, citing Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya: Anyone who disparages the Festivals, it is considered as though he engages in idol worship. This, too, is derived from the juxtaposition of verses, as it is stated: “You shall make yourself no molten gods” (Exodus 34:17), and afterward it is written: “The Festival of matzot you shall keep” (Exodus 34:18), from which it can be inferred that anyone who does not observe the Festivals properly is likened to one who fashions idols.

You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread—eating unleavened bread for seven days, as I have commanded you—at the set time of the month of Abib, for in the month of Abib you went forth from Egypt.

וענין המבזה את המועדות - שעושה מלאכה בחולו של מועד. וביזה אל העונש מפני שאין איסור מלאכת חולו של מועד מפורש בתורה. וזהו על דרך כופר לדבר אחד להכעיס אשר ביארנו כבר כי אין לו חלק לעוה"ב. ואמרו רבותינו זכרונם לברכה הרי שבא להתגייר ואמר, הרי אני מקבל עלי כל התורה חוץ מדבר אחד מדברי סופרים, אין מקבלין אותו. ואמרו זכרונם לברכה (מכות כג,א): מבזה את המועדות - כאילו עובד עבודת כוכבים, שנאמר (שמות ל״ד:י״ז) את חג המצות תשמור וסמוך לו אלהי מסכה לא תעשה לך. ופירשו ז"ל את חג המצות תשמור שלא תעשה מלאכה בכל חג המצות. והזהרנו בזה על מלאכת חולו של מועד. ומה שכתוב ביום הראשון שבתון וביום השביעי שבתון. כי יש מלאכות רבות שהן מותרות בחולו של מועד. כמו שהן מפורשות בדבריהם ז"ל:
And the content of one who spurns the festivals, is that he does work on the intermediate days of the festival and spurns the punishment, because the prohibition of work on the intermediate days of the festival is not explicit in the Torah. And this is in the way of one who is a heretic for one thing, to anger - as we have explained, such that he has no share in the world to come. And our Rabbis, may their memory be blessed, said (Bekhorot 30b) [that] one who comes to convert and says, “Behold, I accept all of the Torah except for one matter from the words of the Sages” - we do not accept him. And they, may their memory be blessed, said (Makkot 23a), “One who spurns the holidays is like one who worships idolatry, as it is stated (Exodus 34:18), ‘You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread’; and adjacent to it is ‘You shall not make molten gods for yourselves’ (Exodus 34:17).” And they, may their memory be blessed, explained (Chagigah 18a), “‘You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread’ - observe it to not do work all of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.” And we were warned with this about work on the intermediate days of the festival. And that which it is written (Leviticus 23:39), “a complete rest (shabbaton) on the first day, and a complete rest on the eighth day” is because there are many types of work that are permitted on the intermediate days of the festival, as is explained in their words, may they be blessed.
