Prior to the verse After these things scripture states: And Abraham heard that his brother was taken captive (Gen. 14:14). Was Lot actually Abraham’s brother? No, indeed! This statement is simply proof of Abraham’s humility. Though Abraham and Lot had quarreled, as it is written: And there was a strife between the herdsmen of Abraham’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle (ibid. 13:7), he called him brother nevertheless, as it is said: For we are brethren (ibid., v. 8). And he led forth (va-yarek) his trained men (Gen. 14:14). This verse indicates that he covered his men with silver and gold. Then he said to them: “Know that we are about to do battle; do not covet their silver and gold, for all this will be yours.” Va-yarek is employed in Scripture only in reference to gold, as it is said: The wings of a dove are all covered with silver, and her pinions with the shimmer of gold (yerakrak) (Ps. 68:14). Another explanation of the word va-yarek: This indicates that he thinned out (herikan) their numbers by saying to them: What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? (Deut. 20:8). That is, whosoever is fearful because of his sins and weak (ve-rakh) of heart (fainthearted) on account of his evil deeds, let him return home, lest his heart melt away (ibid.). With this statement, he thinned out their ranks one by one until only Eliezer remained. Whence do we know this? We know it from the numeral value of the letters of Eliezer’s name. The alef is one, the lamed, thirty, the yod, ten, the ayin seventy, the zayin, seven, and the resh, two hundred, totaling three hundred and eighteen in all (and Scripture states that He led forth … three hundred and eighteen) (Gen. 14:14). And yet that is followed by the singular form he pursued, rather than the plural “they pursued” (implying only one).
דָּרֵשׁ רָבָא בִּשְׂכַר שֶׁאָמַר אַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ אִם מִחוּט וְעַד שְׂרוֹךְ נַעַל זָכוּ בָּנָיו לִשְׁתֵּי מִצְוֹת חוּט שֶׁל תְּכֵלֶת וּרְצוּעָה שֶׁל תְּפִלִּין.
Rava taught: As reward for that which our Patriarch Abraham said to the king of Sodom: “That I will not take a thread nor a shoe strap nor anything that is yours” (Genesis 14:23), distancing himself from anything not rightfully his, his children merited two mitzvot: The thread of sky-blue wool worn on ritual fringes and the strap of phylacteries.
וירדף עד דן אמר רבי יוחנן כיון שבא אותו צדיק עד דן תשש כחו ראה בני בניו שעתידין לעבוד ע"ז בדן שנאמר (מלכים א יב, כט) וישם את האחד בבית אל ואת האחד נתן בדן ואף אותו רשע לא נתגבר עד שהגיע לדן שנאמר (ירמיהו ח, טז) מדן נשמע נחרת סוסיו
With regard to the previous verse: “And he pursued as far as Dan” (Genesis 14:14), Rabbi Yoḥanan says: Once that righteous person, Abraham, came to Dan, his strength weakened. He saw through the Divine Spirit that his descendants were destined to worship idols in Dan, as it is stated: “And he fashioned two calves of gold…and he set one in Bethel, and the other one he placed in Dan” (I Kings 12:28–29). And even that wicked person, Nebuchadnezzar, did not prevail until he reached Dan, as it is stated: “From Dan the snorting of his horses is heard” (Jeremiah 8:16).
אָמַר רַבִּי אֲבָהוּ אָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר: מִפְּנֵי מָה נֶעֱנַשׁ אַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ וְנִשְׁתַּעְבְּדוּ בָּנָיו לְמִצְרַיִם מָאתַיִם וְעֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים — מִפְּנֵי שֶׁעָשָׂה אַנְגַּרְיָיא בְּתַלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״וַיָּרֶק אֶת חֲנִיכָיו יְלִידֵי בֵיתוֹ״. וּשְׁמוּאֵל אָמַר: מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהִפְרִיז עַל מִדּוֹתָיו שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״בַּמָּה אֵדַע כִּי אִירָשֶׁנָּה״. וְרַבִּי יוֹחָנָן אָמַר: שֶׁהִפְרִישׁ בְּנֵי אָדָם מִלְּהִכָּנֵס תַּחַת כַּנְפֵי הַשְּׁכִינָה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״תֶּן לִי הַנֶּפֶשׁ וְהָרְכֻשׁ קַח לָךְ״. ״וַיָּרֶק אֶת חֲנִיכָיו יְלִידֵי בֵיתוֹ״, רַב אָמַר: שֶׁהוֹרִיקָן בַּתּוֹרָה. וּשְׁמוּאֵל אָמַר: שֶׁהוֹרִיקָן בְּזָהָב.
Rabbi Abbahu said that Rabbi Elazar said: For what reason was Abraham our Patriarch punished and his children enslaved to Egypt for 210 years? Because he made a draft [angarya] of Torah scholars, as it is stated: “He led forth his trained men, born in his house” (Genesis 14:14). These trained men that he took to war were actually his disciples, who were Torah scholars. And Shmuel said: Because he greatly examined [hifriz] the characteristics of the Holy One, Blessed be He, as it is stated: “Whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?” (Genesis 15:8). And Rabbi Yoḥanan said: He was punished because he distanced people from entering under the wings of the Divine Presence, as it is stated that the king of Sodom said to him: “Give me the people and take the goods to yourself” (Genesis 14:21), but Abraham refused to take any goods either. If he had not listened to the king of Sodom and had allowed the people to remain with him, he would have brought the prisoners under the wings of the Divine Presence. The Gemara returns to discuss one of the verses cited previously: “He led forth [vayyarek] his trained men, born in his house” (Genesis 14:14). Rav said: He showered them [horikan] with Torah like someone who pours from one vessel into another, and Shmuel said: He showered them [horikan] with gold and gave them an abundance of money so that they would go to war with him.
