(ה) וְעַתָּ֗ה אִם־שָׁמ֤וֹעַ תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ בְּקֹלִ֔י וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֑י וִהְיִ֨יתֶם לִ֤י סְגֻלָּה֙ מִכָּל־הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים כִּי־לִ֖י כָּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Exodus 19:5

(5) Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine,

(ה) ועתה. אִם עַתָּה תְקַבְּלוּ עֲלֵיכֶם, יֶעֱרַב לָכֶם מִכַּאן וְאֵילַךְ, שֶׁכָּל הַתְחָלוֹת קָשׁוֹת (מכילתא):

Rashi on Exodus 19:5:1

(5) ועתה AND NOW — if you will now take upon yourselves the observance of My commandments, it will be pleasant (easy) to you from now and henceforth, for every beginning is difficult (Mekhilta).

משנה ברכות ד׳:ב׳

(ב) רבי נחוניה בן הקנה היה מתפלל בכניסתו לבית המדרש וביציאתו תפלה קצרה. אמרו לו מה מקום לתפלה זו. אמר להם בכניסתי אני מתפלל שלא תארע תקלה על ידי וביציאתי אני נותן הודיה על חלקי.

Mishnah Berakhot 4:2

(2) Rabbi Nechunya ben HaKanah would offer a brief prayer when he entered the study hall and when he left. They said to him: What is the nature of this prayer? He told them: Upon my entrance, I pray that no mishaps should occur because of me; and upon my departure, I offer thanksgiving for my portion.

ברכות כ״ח ב:ל״א-ל״ו

גמ׳ ת"ר בכניסתו מהו אומר יהי רצון מלפניך ה' אלהי שלא יארע דבר תקלה על ידי ולא אכשל בדבר הלכה וישמחו בי חברי ולא אומר על טמא טהור ולא על טהור טמא ולא יכשלו חברי בדבר הלכה ואשמח בהם ביציאתו מהו אומר מודה אני לפניך ה' אלהי ששמת חלקי מיושבי בית המדרש ולא שמת חלקי מיושבי קרנות שאני משכים והם משכימים אני משכים לדברי תורה והם משכימים לדברים בטלים אני עמל והם עמלים אני עמל ומקבל שכר והם עמלים ואינם מקבלים שכר אני רץ והם רצים אני רץ לחיי העולם הבא והם רצים לבאר שחת:

Berakhot 28b:4-5

GEMARA Our Rabbis have taught : What used he to say on entering ? "May it be Thy will, O Lord my God, that no offence occur through me ; that I stumble not in the matter of Halakah ; that my colleagues have occasion to rejoice in me ; that I pronounce not anything clean that is unclean, or unclean that is clean; that my colleagues stumble not through me in the matter of Halakah ; and that I may have occasion to rejoice in them." What used he to say on leaving? "I give thanks before Thee, O Lord my God, that Thou hast set my portion with those who sit in the House of Study and not with those who sit at street-corners; for I and they rise early — I to words of Torah, but they to vain matters ; I and they labour, but I labour and receive a reward whereas they labour and receive no reward ; I and they hasten — I to the life of the world to come, but they to the pit of destruction."

ברכות נ״ד א:כ״ד-כ״ו

הנכנס לכרך מתפלל שתים אחת בכניסתו ואחת ביציאתו בן עזאי אומר ארבע שתים בכניסתו ושתים ביציאתו נותן הודאה על שעבר וצועק על העתיד

Berakhot 54a:5

He who enters a town should offer prayer twice, once on entering and once on leaving. Ben 'Azzai says : Four times, twice on entering and twice on leaving. He gives thanks for what is past and supplicates for what is yet to be.

ברכות י״ז א:כ׳-כ״א

מרגלא בפומיה דר"מ גמור בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך לדעת את דרכי ולשקוד על דלתי תורתי נצור תורתי בלבך ונגד עיניך תהיה יראתי שמור פיך מכל חטא וטהר וקדש עצמך מכל אשמה ועון ואני אהיה עמך בכל מקום.

Berakhot 17a:7

It was a favourite saying of R. Meir : Learn with all thy heart and with all thy soul to know My ways and watch at the doors of My Torah. Guard My Torah in thy heart and let the fear of Me be before thine eyes. Keep thy mouth from all sin, and purify and sanctify thyself from all guilt and iniquity. Then shall I be with thee everywhere.
