Why do we blow the Shofar during the month of Elul?

Why do we blow the Shofar throughout this month? Why did the Jewish people blow the Shofar throughout that month of Elul?
Because in the month of Elul Moshe Rabeinu was on top of Mount Sinai, learning Torah from the mouth of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. And we wanted to be close to him. We wanted to give him a sign that we were with him.
And so we blew the Shofar to give Moshe a sign: "We are with you Moshe Rabeinu!
We are listening to every word that Hashem says to you!"
And now too, every morning in the month of Elul, we blow the Shofar. Every morning we send Hashem a sign and say "Master of the World! We are listening to every word of Torah!"
And at the same time, at shofar blowing we are telling Hakadosh Baruch Hu 'It hurts so badly'. It hurts me that I didn't do it all from the depths of my heart. It hurts me all of the golden idols that I made throughout the year.
