(יב) וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ עֵ֣קֶב תִּשְׁמְע֗וּן אֵ֤ת הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑ם וְשָׁמַר֩ יְהֹוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ לְךָ֗ אֶֽת־הַבְּרִית֙ וְאֶת־הַחֶ֔סֶד אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃

(12) It will be on the heels of your hearkening to these laws and guarding their observance, that your God יהוה will guard for you the covenant and the loving kindness sworn on oath to your ancestors:

את המשפטים, for the earth’s continued existence is linked to performance of justice by its inhabitants. (Proverbs 29,4)

טעם עקב כמו בעבור וכן עקב אשר שמע אברהם בקולי (בראשית כו ה) וכתב רש"י (רש"י על דברים ז׳:י״ב) אם המצות הקלות שאדם דש בעקביו תשמעון ישמור לך השם הבטחתו והזכיר הכתוב המשפטים אולי יזהיר במשפטים הקלים כדיני ממונות שלא יבזו אותם והמפרשים אמרו כי טעם עקב שכר באחרית וכן בשמרם עקב רב (תהלים יט יב) יאמר והיה אחרית תשמעון המשפטים ותשמרו אותם שישמר השם לך את הברית והחסד ואהבך ונכון הוא כי יקראו בלשון הקדש תחלת כל דבר בלשון ראש כענין ראש דברך אמת (שם קיט קס) וכן גדול הדור ראש העם (במדבר כה ד) והמשובח ראש בשמים (שיר השירים ד יד) וכן יקראו אחרית כל דבר עקב כי הלשון יתפוס דמיונו באדם והראש תחלה והעקב בו אחרית וסוף וכן יאמר הכתוב (להלן כח יג מד) לראש ולזנב לדמיון גוף בהמה ואונקלוס (תרגום אונקלוס על דברים ז׳:י״ב) תרגם חלף כמו חלף עבודתכם (במדבר יח לא) עשאו לשון סבוב נגזר מן והיה העקוב למישור (ישעיהו מ ד) הדרך המעוקל ההולך סביב סביב וכן עקובה מדם (הושע ו ח) מסובבת ומוקפת יאמר והיה סבת שמעכם המשפטים ועשותכם אותם שישמור השם לכם בריתו ויפה פירש ודומה לזה בגלל הדבר הזה (דברים ט״ו:י׳) בסבתו מלשון וגללו את האבן (בראשית כט ג) וכן על דעתי כל לשון עקיבה גלגול וסבוב עקוב הלב (ירמיהו יז ט) ויעקבני זה פעמים (בראשית כז לו) ויהוא עשה בעקבה (מלכים ב י יט) ענין גלגולין וסבות ולכן יקראו יעקב ישורון כי היפך העקוב מישור וכן אחורי הרגל שנקרא עקב וידו אוחזת בעקב עשו (בראשית כה כו) יקראנו כן בעבור היותו מעוגל ...

AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS ‘EIKEV’ YE HEARKEN. Eikev means “because.” So also, ‘eikev’ (because) that Abraham hearkened to My voice. And Rashi wrote: “If you will hearken even to the lighter commandments which a person usually treads upon with his ‘heels’ then G-d will keep His promise to you.” Now Scripture mentions the ordinances perhaps because he admonishes them not to be disdainful of the lightly-esteemed ordinances such as the laws pertaining to monetary matters.
And the commentators have said that the meaning of the word eikev is that “in the end” there will be reward. Similarly, in keeping them ‘eikev rav’ . The verse here is thus stating: “and the end of your hearkening to the ordinances and your observing them is that G-d shall keep the covenant and the mercy, and He will love thee. ” This is correct, for in the Sacred Language the beginning of anything is called rosh [literally: “head”], as it is said, ‘rosh’ (the beginning of) Thy word is truth. So also is the leader of the generation called “the head of the people,” and the best of spices is called rosh. Similarly, the conclusion of any matter is called akeiv (heel) as the Sacred Language adopts these figurative expressions from the human body; and thus “the head” is the beginning while “the heel” is the conclusion and end of the body. Scripture also speaks of the head and the tail, figuratively using the body of the animal.
And Onkelos rendered the word eikev as chalaf (“in exchange for”), like ‘cheilef’ (in return for) your service. Onkelos thus made it an expression of “roundabout” derived from the verse, and ‘he’akov (the crooked) shall be made straight — that is, the circuitous road which goes roundabout [will become a straight, level path]. So also ‘akubah’ of blood means “it is surrounded and encircled” . The verse here is thus stating “and it shall come to pass that the effect caused by your hearkening to the ordinances and your performing them will be that G-d will keep His covenant with you.” He has explained it well. A similar expression is ‘biglal’ this thing which means “on account of,” from the word ‘v’gal’lu’ (and they roll) the stone. Similarly it is my opinion that every expression of akeivah is a term denoting “circle” or “circuit.” Thus: akov haleiv’ (the heart is deceitful); ‘vaya’akveini’ these two times; but Jehu did it ‘b’akbah’ (in subtlety) — all these being expressions of “rolling” and “circling.” Therefore they called Jacob “Jeshurun” [from the root yashar (straight and upright)] because the opposite of “the deceitful one” is he who is “upright” [as indicated by the name “Jeshurun”]. Similarly, the end-part of the foot, called akeiv — as it is said, and his hand seizing ‘ba’akeiv (the heel) of Esau — is so called because of its roundness, ....

(טז) וּמַלְתֶּ֕ם אֵ֖ת עׇרְלַ֣ת לְבַבְכֶ֑ם וְעׇ֨רְפְּכֶ֔ם לֹ֥א תַקְשׁ֖וּ עֽוֹד׃

(16) Circumcise the thickening/ foreskin of your hearts and stiffen your necks no more.

ומלתם את ערלת לבבכם שיהיה לבבכם פתוח לדעת האמת לא כאשר עשיתם עד היום שלא נתן ה' לכם לב לדעת ועינים לראות ואזנים לשמוע:

CIRCUMCISE THEREFORE THE FORESKIN OF YOUR HEART — that your heart be open to know the truth, not as you have done to this day, for the Eternal hath not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear [unto this day].

מִנַּיִין לַמִּילָה שֶׁבְּאוֹתוֹ מָקוֹם? נֶאֱמַר כָּאן ״עׇרְלָתוֹ״, וְנֶאֱמַר לְהַלָּן ״עׇרְלָתוֹ״, מַה לְּהַלָּן דָּבָר שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה פְּרִי — אַף כָּאן דָּבָר שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה פְּרִי. אֵימָא לִבּוֹ, דִּכְתִיב: ״וּמַלְתֶּם אֵת עׇרְלַת לְבַבְכֶם״?! אֵימָא אׇזְנוֹ, דִּכְתִיב: ״הִנֵּה עֲרֵלָה אׇזְנָם״?! דָּנִין ״עׇרְלָתוֹ״ תַּמָּה מֵ״עׇרְלָתוֹ״ תַּמָּה, וְאֵין דָּנִין ״עׇרְלָתוֹ״ תַּמָּה מֵ״עׇרְלָתוֹ״ שֶׁאֵינָהּ תַּמָּה.
Karna also asked: From where is derived that circumcision is performed in that place? Rav answered him: It is stated here, with regard to circumcision: “And on the eighth day he shall circumcise the flesh of his foreskin [orlato]” (Leviticus 12:3), and it is stated there, with regard to recently planted trees: “And when you come to the land and plant all types of fruit trees, and you shall count the fruit thereof as forbidden [orlato]; three years shall it be as forbidden unto you, it shall not be eaten.” (Leviticus 19:23). Just as there the Torah is referring to a tree, which is an item that bears fruit, here, too, in the case of circumcision, orla is referring to an item that bears fruit. He asked him: Say that circumcision should be performed on one’s heart, as it is written: “And you shall circumcise the foreskin of [orlat] your heart” (Deuteronomy 10:16)? Say that circumcision should be performed on one’s ear, as it is written: “Behold, their ear is dull [areila] and they cannot listen” (Jeremiah 6:10)? Rav said to him: One derives the meaning of the complete form orlato from another instance of the complete form orlato; and one does not derive the complete form orlato from the incomplete form orlat, which modifies another word, as is also the case with the word areila.

Never has this been more literally true than in modern times, the very existence of the earth is threatened by greed and inequality, pollution and climate change, habitat destruction, war, threaten our own existence as well. We speak of the human carbon "footprint" and the human heel in snuffing out life, both human and more than human on every level.

The heel is the thickest skin, and is made thicker by abrasion. It's said if you didn't wear shoes you wouldn't need them so thick would the sole be. But the heart and soul can also be thickened by constant abrasion - exposure to species extinctions, to school shootings, to suffering of war refugees, and we stop feeling.

Moses was told to remove his shoes in the Presence - to feel that the ground he stood upon was holy.

Rashi interprets the "heel" as stomping upon economic laws!

Rambam explains that the heel is round, and makes the connection to the heart: akov haleiv’ (the heart is deceitful);he heart -as it circles around, rather than being straight forward. That leads us to one of the most powerful mitzvot in Torah. In D'varim 10:16.

In the song "HaKotel" - referring to the western wall, it explains: there are stones with a human heart and humans with a heart of stone"

I placed a prayer in the cracks of the western wall, the kotel, and it happened to be Eikev that week. My prayer was this. Ezekiel's prophecy -G*d will remove our hearts of stone, and replace them with hearts that can feel. That are open to uncomfortable truths that we've built a blockage around. Baby boys are often entered into this covenant to care for one another with a Brit milah - they have no say in the matter. All of us can enter this covenant of caring by removing the callouses around our stony hearts. Today my prayer in the cracks of the stones of the kotel is to be deployed, to help others to feel more deeply too.That we could not bear the suffering of children. There's more room in a broken heart.

(כו) וְנָתַתִּ֤י לָכֶם֙ לֵ֣ב חָדָ֔שׁ וְר֥וּחַ חֲדָשָׁ֖ה אֶתֵּ֣ן בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם וַהֲסִ֨רֹתִ֜י אֶת־לֵ֤ב הָאֶ֙בֶן֙ מִבְּשַׂרְכֶ֔ם וְנָתַתִּ֥י לָכֶ֖ם לֵ֥ב בָּשָֽׂר׃

(26) And I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit into you: I will remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh;
