וְזָכַרְתָּ֣ אֶת־כׇּל־הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹלִֽיכְךָ֜ יְהֹוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ זֶ֛ה אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר לְמַ֨עַן עַנֹּֽתְךָ֜ לְנַסֹּֽתְךָ֗ לָדַ֜עַת אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֧ר בִּֽלְבָבְךָ֛ הֲתִשְׁמֹ֥ר מִצְוֺתָ֖ו אִם־לֹֽא׃

Deuteronomy 8:2

Remember the long way that the LORD your God has made you travel in the wilderness these past forty years, that He might test you by hardships to learn what was in your hearts: whether you would keep His commandments or not.

What difficulties have you. traversed in the wilderness?

What have your hardships impressed upon your hearts?

דברים י״א:י״ח

(יח) וְשַׂמְתֶּם֙ אֶת־דְּבָרַ֣י אֵ֔לֶּה עַל־לְבַבְכֶ֖ם וְעַֽל־נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם וּקְשַׁרְתֶּ֨ם אֹתָ֤ם לְאוֹת֙ עַל־יֶדְכֶ֔ם וְהָי֥וּ לְטוֹטָפֹ֖ת בֵּ֥ין עֵינֵיכֶֽם׃

Deuteronomy 11:18

(18) Therefore impress these My words upon your very heart (*lit: heart and soul) : bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead (*lit:between your eyes),

ספרי דברים מ״ה:א׳

ושמתם את דברי אלה על לבבכם ועל נפשכם - מגיד הכתוב שנמשלו דברי תורה בסם החיים.

Sifrei Devarim 45:1

(Devarim 11:18) "And you shall place these words upon your hearts and upon your souls": Scripture hereby apprises us that words of Torah are comparable to a drug of life.

ראשית חכמה, שער התשובה ז׳:כ״ג

ומה לעשות, מלמד ללב - ושמתם את דברי אלה על לבבכם (דברים יא, יח). לעינים - פן תשכח את הדברים אשר ראו עיניך (שם יא, יב). לאזנים - שמע ישראל את החוקים (שם ה, א). ללשון - ושננתם לבניך (שם ו, ז). לידים - פתוח תפתח את ידך (שם טו, ח). לערוה - ואתם פרו ורבו (בראשית ט, ז), ואומר (ירמיה כט, ו) קחו נשים והולידו. לרגלים - בכל הדרך אשר צוה ה' אלהיכם אתכם תלכו (דברים ה, ל).

And what are we tasked to do?

Teach to the heart - "and you put these words on your heart" (Deuteronomy 11:18).

Teach to the eyes - "lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen" (ibid. 11:12). Teach to your ears - "Israel heard the laws" (Ibid. 5:1).

Teach to the tongue - "and you memorized it for your children "(Ibid. 6:7).

Teach to the hands - "open, open your hand" (ibid. 15:8).

Teach to the nakedness - "and ye shall be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 9:7), and it says (Jeremiah 29:6) "Take wives and bear children."

Teach to the feet - "in whatever way the Lord your God commands you to go" (Deuteronomy 5:3).

שְׂאוּ֩ לַשָּׁמַ֨יִם עֵֽינֵיכֶ֜ם וְֽהַבִּ֧יטוּ אֶל־הָאָ֣רֶץ מִתַּ֗חַת כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֜יִם כֶּעָשָׁ֤ן נִמְלָ֙חוּ֙ וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ כַּבֶּ֣גֶד תִּבְלֶ֔ה וְיֹשְׁבֶ֖יהָ כְּמוֹ־כֵ֣ן יְמוּת֑וּן וִישֽׁוּעָתִי֙ לְעוֹלָ֣ם תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה וְצִדְקָתִ֖י לֹ֥א תֵחָֽת׃ {פ}

Isaiah 51:6

Raise your eyes to the heavens,
And look upon the earth beneath:
Though the heavens should melt away like smoke,
And the earth wear out like a garment,
And its inhabitants die out as well,^-d
My victory shall stand forever,
My triumph shall remain unbroken.

וָאָשִׂ֤ם דְּבָרַי֙ בְּפִ֔יךָ וּבְצֵ֥ל יָדִ֖י כִּסִּיתִ֑יךָ לִנְטֹ֤עַ שָׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְלִיסֹ֣ד אָ֔רֶץ וְלֵאמֹ֥ר לְצִיּ֖וֹן עַמִּי־אָֽתָּה׃ {ס}

Isaiah 51:16

Have put My words in your mouth
And sheltered you with My hand;^-h
I, who planted the skies and made firm the earth,
Have said to Zion: You are My people!

ספרי:
אף על פי שאני מגלה אתכם מן הארץ לחוץ לארץ, היו מצוינים במצוות, שכשאתם חוזרים לא יהיו לכם חדשים. משל למלך שכעס על אשתו וחזרה לבית אביה, אמר לה: הוי מקושטת בתכשיטיך, כשתחזרי לא יהיו עליך חדשים. כך אמר להם הקב"ה לישראל: בני, הֱיו מצוינים במצוות, שכשאתם חוזרים לא יהיו עליכם חדשים. וירמיהו אמר (ל"א) "הציבי לך ציונים".
