Translation: "The Contemporary Torah"

(1) Some time afterward, God put Abraham to the test, saying to him, “Abraham.” He answered, “Here I am.” (2) “Take your son, your favored one, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you.” (3) So early next morning, Abraham saddled his ass and took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and he set out for the place of which God had told him. (4) On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place from afar. (5) Then Abraham said to his servants, “You stay here with the ass. The boy and I will go up there; we will worship and we will return to you.” (6) Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac. He himself took the firestone and the knife; and the two walked off together. (7) Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” And he answered, “Yes, my son.” And he said, “Here are the firestone and the wood; but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” (8) And Abraham said, “It is God who will see to the sheep for this burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them walked on together. (9) They arrived at the place of which God had told him. Abraham built an altar there; he laid out the wood; he bound his son Isaac; he laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. (10) And Abraham picked up the knife to slay his son. (11) Then a messenger of יהוה called to him from heaven: “Abraham! Abraham!” And he answered, “Here I am.” (12) “Do not raise your hand against the boy, or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your favored one, from Me.” (13) When Abraham looked up, his eye fell upon a ram, caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering in place of his son. (14) And Abraham named that site Adonai-yireh, whence the present saying, “On the mount of יהוה there is vision.” (15) The messenger of יהוה called to Abraham a second time from heaven, (16) and said, “By Myself I swear, יהוה declares: Because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your favored one, (17) I will bestow My blessing upon you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the sands on the seashore; and your descendants shall seize the gates of their foes. (18) All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, because you have obeyed My command.” (19) Abraham then returned to his servants, and they departed together for Beer-sheba; and Abraham stayed in Beer-sheba. (20) Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah too has borne sons to your brother Nahor: (21) Uz the first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram; (22) and Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel”— (23) Bethuel being the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. (24) And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore [sons]—Tebah, Gaham, and Tahash—and [a daughter,] Maacah.

1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

القرآن: سورة الصّافّات

37:102-111

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعْىَ قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ فِى ٱلْمَنَامِ أَنِّىٓ أَذْبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ ١٠٢ فَلَمَّآ أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلْجَبِينِ ١٠٣ وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ أَن يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ ١٠٤ قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ ١٠٥ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْبَلَـٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلْمُبِينُ ١٠٦ وَفَدَيْنَـٰهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍۢ ١٠٧ وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ١٠٨ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ١٠٩ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ ١١٠ إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ١١١

Quran: Surah As-Saffat 37:102-111

(37:102) Then when the boy reached the age to work with him, Abraham said, “O my dear son! I have seen in a dream that I ˹must˺ sacrifice you. So tell me what you think.” He replied, “O my dear father! Do as you are commanded. Allah willing, you will find me steadfast.” (103) Then when they submitted ˹to Allah’s Will˺, and Abraham laid him on the side of his forehead ˹for sacrifice˺, (104) We called out to him, “O Abraham! (105) You have already fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers. (106) That was truly a revealing test. (107) And We ransomed his son with a great sacrifice,1 (108) and blessed Abraham ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations: (109) “Peace be upon Abraham.” (110) This is how We reward the good-doers. (111) He was truly one of Our faithful servants.

Sits on the bench, deep in thought.

Her joy flutters like a young swallow over the roof.

She smiles. Already a month has passed since Hagar went away,

Little Isaac, the apple of her eye, plays in the yellow sand.

And from the nearby mountains, a blue night descends.

She gazes on little Isaac with delight: Is it a dream or real?

He is his father’s spitting image, his nose and his hair.

But what is going on with Abraham tonight?

He’s sitting alone in the yard, and ever since dinner,

He’s been sharpening his knife on a stone.

His gray beard trembles, and he murmurs strange mutterings,

With “ay-ay-ay and ay-lyu-lyu,“ a child is drifting off to sleep.

And with the knife in his hand, Abraham stands and hears

How the quiet lullaby wraps itself around the whole earth.

Ibrahim (AS) experienced a dream in which he was ordered to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (AS), at first, he was sceptical and believed it was trickery of the cursed devil. After experiencing the dream, the following night, he then understood that it was a message and a command from Allah (SWT). Without hesitation he prepared his son for the sacrifice. Ibrahim (AS) loved his son dearly yet this was no obstruction to honouring his duty that was instructed to him by Allah (SWT) and thus proving his full submission to Allah (SWT).

Ibrahim (AS) took his son to the top of mount Arafat and in his hands, a knife and a rope. Upon Arrival He mention the dream to his son Ismail (AS) and made him aware that Allah (SWT) has decreed for him to be a sacrifice and in obedience his son Ismail (AS) accepted what was commanded of him. Ismail (AS) asked that his hands and legs be tied to avoid struggling during the sacrifice and that his father should blindfold himself to avoid witness the suffering of his son. Ismail was aware of his father’s love towards him and knew that this would be difficult to witness. As Ibrahim (AS) began to carry the sacrifice, Allah (SWT) replaced Ismail with a ram and Ismail (AS) was unharmed. Allah (SWT) tested Ibrahim (AS) to see his dedication in his submission (Islam) to his creator. In his willingness to oblige to Allah (SWT) commands, Ibrahim (AS) successfully passed the test and Qurbani acts as a reminder of our beloved Prophet Ibrahim (AS) dedication and devotion to serving Allah (SWT) obediently, this is the true Islam of oneself that Allah (SWT) expects from us.

If your soul is exceedingly tied tight with him,

To follow you full fain.

Abraham being minded to slay his son Isaac, lifts up his hands, and saith the following:

Abraham: O! My heart will break in three,

To hear thy words I have pitye;

As Thou wilt, Lord, so must it be,

To Thee I will be bayn.

Lay down thy faggot, my own son dear.

Isaac: All ready father, lo, it is here.

But why make you such heavy cheer?

Are you anything adread?

Abraham: Ah! Dear God! That me is woe!

Isaac: Father, if it be your will,

Where is the beast that we shall kill?

Abraham: Thereof, son, is none upon this hill.

Isaac: Father, I am full sore affeared

To see you bear that drawne sword.

Abraham: Isaac, son, peace, I pray thee,

Thou breakest my heart even in three.

Isaac: I pray you, father, layn† nothing from me,

But tell me what you think.

Abraham: Ah! Isaac, Isaac, I must thee kill!

Isaac: Alas! Father, is that your will,

Your owne child for to spill

Upon this hilles brink?

If I have trespassed in any degree

With a yard you may beat me;

Put up your sword, if your will be,

For I am but a child.

Would God my mother were here with me!

She would kneel down upon her knee,

Praying you, father, if it may be,

For to save my life.

Abraham: O Isaac, son, to thee I say

God hath commanded me today

Sacrifice, this is no nay,

To make of thy bodye.

Isaac: Is it God’s will I shall be slain?

Abraham: Yea, son, it is not for to layn.

Here Isaac asketh his father’s blessing on his knees, and saith:

Isaac: Father, seeing you muste needs do so,

Let it pass lightly and over go;

Kneeling on my knees two,

Your blessing on me spread.

Abraham: My blessing, dear son, give I thee

And thy mother’s with heart free.

The blessing of the Trinity,

My dear Son, on thee light.

Here Isaac riseth and cometh to his father, and he taketh him,

and bindeth and layeth him upon the altar to sacrifice him, and saith:

Abraham: Come hither, my child, thou art so sweet,

Thou must be bound both hands and feet.

Isaac: Father, do with me as you will,

I must obey, and that is skill,

Godës commandment to fulfil,

For needs so it must be.

Abraham: Isaac, Isaac, blessed must thou be.

Isaac: Father, greet well my brethren ying,

And pray my mother of her blessing,

I come no more under her wing,

Farewell for ever and aye.

Abraham: Farewell, my sweete son of grace!

Here Abraham doth kiss his son Isaac, and binds a kerchief about his head.

Isaac: I pray you, father, turn down my face,

For I am sore adread.

Abraham: Lord, full loth were I him to kill!

Isaac: Ah, mercy, father, why tarry you so?

Abraham: Jesu! On me have pity,

That I have most in mind.

Isaac: Now, father, I see that I shall die:

Almighty God in majesty!

My soul I offer unto Thee!

Abraham: To do this deed I am sorrye.

Here let Abraham make a sign as tho’ he would cut off his son Isaac’s head with his sword; then …

God speaks: Abraham, my servant dear, Abraham,

Lay not thy sword in no manner

On Isaac, thy dear darling.

For thou dreadest me, well wot I,

That of thy son had no mercy,

To fulfil my bidding.

Abraham: Ah, Lord of heaven and King of bliss,

Thy bidding shall be done, i-wiss!

A horned wether here I see,

Among the briars tied is he,

To Thee offered shall he be

Anon right in this place.

Then let Abraham take the lamb and kill him.

Abraham: Sacrifice here sent me is,

And all, Lord, through Thy grace.

envoi Such obedience grant us, O Lord!

Ever to Thy most holy word.

That in the same we may accord

As this Abraham was bayn;

And then altogether shall we

That worthy King in heaven see,

And dwell with Him in great glorye

For ever and ever. Amen

to Him belongs all Praise

Allahu Akbaru Kabeera

Allah is the Greatest

wal-Hamdulilahi katheera

And all Praise is due to Him

wa Subhan allahi

And Glory to Allah

bukratan wa aseila

eventide and in the morning
