(14) From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardships that have befallen us; (15) that our ancestors went down to Egypt, that we dwelt in Egypt a long time, and that the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our ancestors. (16) We cried to ה' who heard our plea, sending a messenger who freed us from Egypt.

Now we are in Kadesh, the town on the border of your territory. (17) Allow us, then, to cross your country. We will not pass through fields or vineyards, and we will not drink water from wells. We will follow the king’s highway, turning off neither to the right nor to the left until we have crossed your territory.”

(18) But Edom answered him, “You shall not pass through us, else we will go out against you with the sword.”

(19) “We will keep to the beaten track,” the Israelites said to them, “and if we or our cattle drink your water, we will pay for it. We ask only for passage on foot—it is but a small matter.”

(20) But they replied, “You shall not pass through!” And Edom went out against them in heavy force, strongly armed. (21) So Edom would not let Israel cross their territory, and Israel turned away from them.

(1) we marched back into the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds, as ה' had spoken to me, and skirted the hill country of Seir a long time. (2) Then ה' said to me: (3) You have been skirting this hill country long enough; now turn north.

(4) And charge the people as follows: You will be passing through the territory of your kin, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they will be afraid of you, be very careful (5) not to provoke them. For I will not give you of their land so much as a foot can tread on; I have given the hill country of Seir as a possession to Esau.

(6) What food you eat you shall obtain from them for money; even the water you drink you shall procure from them for money. (7) Indeed, your God ה' has blessed you in all your undertakings. [God] has watched over your wanderings through this great wilderness; your God ה' has been with you these past forty years: you have lacked nothing.

(8) We then moved on, away from our kin, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the road of the Arabah, away from Elath and Ezion-geber; and we marched on in the direction of the wilderness of Moab.

(9) This, then, is the line of Esau, the ancestor of the Edomites, in the hill country of Seir.

(4) Jacob sent messengers ahead to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom, (5) and instructed them as follows, “Thus shall you say, ‘To my lord Esau, thus says your servant Jacob: I stayed with Laban and remained until now; (6) I have acquired cattle, asses, sheep, and male and female slaves; and I send this message to my lord in the hope of gaining your favor.’” (7) The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau; he himself is coming to meet you, and his retinue numbers four hundred.”

THY BROTHER ISRAEL — What reason had he to mention here their brotherhood? But in effect he said to him: We are brothers, sons of Abraham to whom it was said, (Genesis 15:13) “know for a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger [in a land not theirs]”, and upon both of us, being of Abraham’s seed, was the duty of paying that debt (Midrash Tanchuma, Chukat 12).

(א) אתה ידעת את כל התלאה. היו ישראל מפתים אותם בדברים כאדם שמספר לפני אהבו וקרובו תלאותיו ומספר לו מאורעיו לפי שישים אל לבו וירחם עליו:

12th Century, France

1) They were hoping for a little compassion from Edom, their brother.

“Then Moses sent messengers... ‘Thus says your brother Israel…. You know all the hardships that have befallen us.’” They said to him, “You know when the Holy One, blessed be G-d, said to Abraham [Gen. 15:13], ‘know full well that your seed shall be strangers [in a land not theirs where they shall serve them and be oppressed by them],’ it was we who were enslaved, while you are free.”

“How our forefathers went down to Egypt....” This whole subject is comparable to two brothers against whose grandfather a promissory note appeared. One of them arose and paid it. One day he started to ask a favor from his brother, and he said to him, “You know that debt was incumbent on both of us, but it was I who paid it. Do not refuse any of my favor that I am asking” (Num. 20:15).

(1) וביד חזקה AND WITH A STRONG HAND — relying upon our ancestors’ assurance: (Genesis 27:22) “and the hands are the hands of Esau” (cf. Midrash Tanchuma, Beshalach 9 on בשלח)

(21) Israel now sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, (22) “Let me pass through your country. We will not turn off into fields or vineyards, and we will not drink water from wells. We will follow the king’s highway until we have crossed your territory.” (23) But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Sihon gathered all his troops and went out against Israel in the wilderness. He came to Jahaz and engaged Israel in battle. (24) But Israel put them to the sword, and took possession of their land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as [Az] of the Ammonites, for Az marked the boundary of the Ammonites. (25) Israel took all those towns. And Israel settled in all the towns of the Amorites, in Heshbon and all its dependencies. (26) Now Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against a former king of Moab and taken all his land from him as far as the Arnon.

(26) Then I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace, as follows, (27) “Let me pass through your country. I will keep strictly to the highway, turning off neither to the right nor to the left. (28) What food I eat you will supply for money, and what water I drink you will furnish for money; just let me pass through — (29) as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir did for me, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar—that I may cross the Jordan into the land that our God ה' is giving us.” (30) But King Sihon of Heshbon refused to let us pass through, because ה' had stiffened his will and hardened his heart in order to deliver him into your power—as is now the case. (31) And ה' said to me: See, I begin by placing Sihon and his land at your disposal. Begin the occupation; take possession of his land. (32) Sihon with all his troops took the field against us at Jahaz, (33) and our God ה' delivered him to us and we defeated him and his sons and all his troops. (34) At that time we captured all his towns, and we doomed every town—men, women, and children —leaving no survivor. (35) We retained as booty only the cattle and the spoil of the cities that we captured.
