Unit 2(D): What Did Moses Write? Biblical Perspectives, Part 4 "Is Deuteronomy Different?"

(1) These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel on the far side of the Jordan in the wilderness, on the plain, across from Suf, between Paran and Tofel, Lavan, Hazerot, and Di-zahav....(3) In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the Israelites according to all that Adonai had commanded him for them....

(5) On the far side of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this Teaching, saying, (6) "Adonai our God spoke to us at Horeb [= Sinai], saying: You have stayed long enough at this mountain. (7) Turn and move on, go toward the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in the plain, in the hill country, in the lowland, in the south, and on the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and the Lebanon, as far as the Great River, the river Euphrates. (8) See, I have placed the land before you; go and possess the land that Adonai swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them and their offspring after them."

(9) And I said to you, “I cannot handle you by myself. (10) Adonai your God has multiplied you and now you are today as numerous as the stars of the sky. (11) May Adonai, the God of your ancestors, increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he promised you. (12) How can I handle your trouble, and your burden, and your fighting by myself? (13) Pick men who are wise, understanding, and experienced for your tribes, and I will set them as your leaders." (14) And you answered me and said, "What you intend to do is good."

(2) Then Adonai said to me, (3) "You have stayed around this hill country long enough; turn to the north.

(9) And Adonai said to me, "Do not harass Moab or provoke them to war. For I will not give you any of their land as a possession, since I have given Ar as a possession to the children of Lot."

(17) Adonai spoke to me, saying, (18) "Today you are passing through the territory of Moab, through Ar. (19) You will come close to the children of Ammon; do not harass them or fight with them. For I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon as a possession, since I have given it as a possession to the children of Lot."

(1) We turned and went up toward Bashan, and Og, king of Bashan, came out against us--he and all his people--for war at Edre'i. And Adonai said to me, "Do not fear him...."

(1) Moses called to all Israel and said to them, "Hear, O Israel, the regulations and the laws that I am proclaiming aloud to you this day. Study them and make sure to keep them! (2) Adonai our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. (3) Not with our ancestors did Adonai make this covenant, but with us, we ourselves, those who are here today, all of us living. (4) Face to face Adonai spoke with you at the mountain from out of the fire. (5) I was standing between Adonai and you at that time to declare the word of Adonai to you-- for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain--saying:

(6) I am Adonai your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, the house of slavery....[followed by the rest of the Ten Commandments]."

(19) Adonai spoke these words to your whole assembly at the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud, and the thick mist--a great voice, but he/it did not go on. Then he wrote them down on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
