And now,
cursed be you from the ground,
which opened up its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
- Debate over where Cain is cursed by the ground or more cursed than the ground
- First curse uttered against a human being
- Alter: physical bodily imagery - "a gaping mouth taking in blood from the murderer's hand."
- Ibn Ezra's connection with Job
וְ֭אִיּוֹב הֶ֣בֶל יִפְצֶה־פִּ֑יהוּ בִּבְלִי־דַ֝֗עַת מִלִּ֥ין יַכְבִּֽר׃ {פ}
Hence Job mouths empty words,
And piles up words without knowledge.
(9) יהוה said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Ibn Ezra commentary: parallel in "mouth", Abel's name mean's empty
(12) If you till the soil, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. You shall become a ceaseless wanderer on earth.”
(13) יהוה, incensed at Israel, made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the whole generation that had provoked יהוה’s displeasure was gone.
(5) You shall then recite as follows before your God יהוה: “My father was a fugitive Aramean. He went down to Egypt with meager numbers and sojourned there; but there he became a great and very populous nation.
Double meaning - fugitive and tried to kill?
(13) So when God made me wander from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘Let this be the kindness that you shall do me: whatever place we come to, say there of me: He is my brother.’”
