(14) Those nations that you are about to dispossess are deluded by soothsayers and magic; but as for you, not so. The Eternal your God has not given you over to this. (15) A prophet from your midst, from among your brothers, like me, will he raise up for you, the Eternal your God יי. Him shall you heed. (transl J.E. ben Noah)

Without having revealed His purpose
To His servants the prophets.
(8) A lion has roared,
Who can but fear?
My Lord GOD has spoken,
Who can but prophesy?

(12) Fashion a pure heart for me, O God;
create in me a steadfast spirit.
(13) Do not cast me out of Your presence,
or take Your holy spirit away from me.
(14) Let me again rejoice in Your help;
let a vigorous spirit sustain me.
(15) I will teach transgressors Your ways,
that sinners may return to You.

(18) Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke, for יי had come down upon it in fire; the smoke rose like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled violently. (19) The blare of the horn grew louder and louder. As Moses spoke, God answered him in thunder. (20) יי came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and יי called Moses to the top of the mountain and Moses went up.

(29) So Moses came down from Mount Sinai. And as Moses came down from the mountain bearing the two tablets of the Pact, Moses was not aware that the skin of his face was radiant, since he had spoken with God.

It is a fundamental part of religion to acknowledge that God bestows prophecy upon the sons of men. But prophecy does not descend save upon a wise man, eminent in wisdom, of sterling character, never subdued by worldly passion, but conquering it by an ever-present will-power, broadminded and settled to the highest degree. A man, endowed with all these moral principles, of sound physique, when he enters the Vineyard and is carried away with the current of these great and remote subjects, and possessed of a mind ready to understand and attain, he continuing to gain in saintliness, separated from the general public which follows the dark paths of the times, continuing to take care of himself, training his soul to heed no thought in idle affairs nor in the vanities and phantasies of the time, but his mind be constantly ready and directed Upward, connected to the Throne Beneath, to understand the Holy and Pure Intelligences and to penetrate the scope of Wisdom of the Holy One, blessed is He! from the First Intelligence even unto the summit of the earth to know from them His greatness —immediately the Holy Spirit will rest upon him. And, when the Spirit will rest upon him his soul will be mingling with the Angels of the degree of the Sphere called Men, and will be transformed into another being, and will understand his own intelligence that he is not as he was, but that he was elevated above the degree of other wise sons of man, as it is said of Saul: "And thou shalt prophesy among them and thou shalt be turned into another man" (I Sam. 10.6).

(18) I will raise up for them from among their own people a prophet like yourself, in whose mouth I will put My words and who will speak to them all that I command; (19) and anybody who fails to heed the words [the prophet] speaks in My name, I Myself will call to account. (20) But any prophet who presumes to speak in My name an oracle that I did not command to be uttered, or who speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet shall die.” (21) And should you ask yourselves, “How can we know that the oracle was not spoken by יי ?”— (22) if the prophet speaks in the name of יי and the oracle does not come true, that oracle was not spoken by יי; the prophet has uttered it presumptuously: do not stand in dread of that person.

(6) The spirit of the LORD will grip you, and you will speak in ecstasy along with them; you will become another man. (7) And once these signs have happened to you, act when the occasion arises,-f for God is with you. (8) After that, you are to go down to Gilgal ahead of me, and I will come down to you to present burnt offerings and offer sacrifices of well-being. Wait seven days until I come to you and instruct you what you are to do next.” (9) As [Saul] turned around to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all those signs were fulfilled that same day. (10) And when they came there, to the Hill,-d he saw a band of prophets coming toward him. Thereupon the spirit of God gripped him, and he spoke in ecstasy among them.

(13) Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the LORD gripped David from that day on. Samuel then set out for Ramah. (14) Now the spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD began to terrify him. (15) Saul’s courtiers said to him, “An evil spirit of God is terrifying you. (16) Let our lord give the order [and] the courtiers in attendance on you will look for someone who is skilled at playing the lyre; whenever the evil spirit of God comes over you, he will play it and you will feel better.”

Whenever the [evil] spirit of God came upon Saul, David would take the lyre and play it; Saul would find relief and feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

(1) After that,
I will pour out My spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and daughters shall prophesy;
Your old men shall dream dreams,
And your young men shall see visions.
(2) I will even pour out My spirit
Upon male and female slaves in those days.
(3) Before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes,-a
I will set portents in the sky and on earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke;
(4) The sun shall turn into darkness
And the moon into blood.
(5) But everyone who invokes the name of the LORD shall escape; for there shall be a remnant on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, as the LORD promised. Anyone who invokes the LORD will be among the survivors.-b

(1) The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
(2) For learning wisdom and discipline;
For understanding words of discernment;
(3) For acquiring the discipline for success,
Righteousness, justice, and equity;
(4) For endowing the simple with shrewdness,
The young with knowledge and foresight.
(5) —The wise man, hearing them, will gain more wisdom;
The discerning man will learn to be adroit;
(6) For understanding proverb and epigram,
The words of the wise and their riddles.
(7) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and discipline.

And I have filled him with the spirit of G-d, with wisdom [to learn from others], with understanding [to learn from what he has learned], with knowledge [the holy spirit], and with (skill in) all work.
