Pekudei Study 5782
אֵלֶּה פְקוּדֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן מִשְׁכַּן הָעֵדֻת
אֲשֶׁר פֻּקַּד עַל־פִּי מֹשֶׁה
עֲבֹדַת הַלְוִיִּם בְּיַד אִיתָמָר בֶּן־אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן:
These are the accountings of the mishkan, the mishkan of testimony, which were drawn up at Moshe’s bidding—the work of the Levites under the direction of Itamar son of Aharon the priest.
רַבִּי יִצְחָק הָיָה דוֹרֵשׁ לְשֶׁבַח...וַחֲבֵרוֹ מְשִׁיבוֹ, רֵיקָה, אָדָם שֶׁנִּתְמַנָּה עַל מְלֶאכֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן עַל כִּכְּרֵי כֶסֶף וְעַל כִּכְּרֵי זָהָב שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם חֵקֶר וְלֹא מִשְׁקָל וְלֹא מִנְיָן, מָה אַתָּה רוֹצֶה, שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיֶה עָשִׁיר?!
כְּשֶׁשָּׁמַע כֵּן, אָמַר: חַיֵּיכֶם, מִשֶּׁנִּגְמְרָה מְלֶאכֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן אֲנִי נוֹתֵן לָהֶם חֶשְׁבּוֹן.
כֵּיוָן שֶׁנִּגְמְרָה, אָמַר לָהֶם: "אֵלֶּה פְקוּדֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן" (שמות לח:כא).
Rabbi Yitzhak explained this as a praise of Moshe: When one person would speak positively about Moshe, another would respond: “Fool, do you imagine that a person in charge of building the mishkan—with amounts of silver and gold that are not examined, nor weighed, nor accounted for—will not become wealthy?!”
When Moshe heard that, he said: “Be assured, when the work of the mishkan is completed, I will give them an accounting.”
When it was completed he said to them: “These are the accountings of the mishkan” (Shemot 38:21).

בְּיוֹם־הַחֹ֥דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ תָּקִ֕ים אֶת־מִשְׁכַּ֖ן אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃

On the first day of the first month you shall set up the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.

וַיְהִ֞י בַּחֹ֧דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֛וֹן בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הוּקַ֖ם הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

In the first month of the second year, on the first of the month, the Tabernacle was set up.

וַיָּ֨קֶם מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן וַיִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־אֲדָנָ֔יו וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶת־קְרָשָׁ֔יו וַיִּתֵּ֖ן אֶת־בְּרִיחָ֑יו וַיָּ֖קֶם אֶת־עַמּוּדָֽיו׃

Moses set up the Tabernacle, placing its sockets, setting up its planks, inserting its bars, and erecting its posts.

אָמַר רַבִּי חִיָּא בַּר יוֹסֵף, כָּל שִׁבְעַת יְמֵי הַמִּלּוּאִים הָיָה מֹשֶׁה מְפָרְקוֹ וּמַעֲמִידוֹ שְׁתֵּי פְעָמִים בְּכָל יוֹם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: תָּקִים, הוּקַם. רַבִּי חֲנִינָא אוֹמֵר, שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: תָּקִים, הוּקַם, וַיָּקֶם.

R. Hiyya the son of Joseph stated: Throughout the seven days of dedication, Moses took apart the Tabernacle and reassembled it twice each day, as is indicated in those verses by the words set up and it was set up. R. Hanina held that he did so three times each day, since it is said: set up, thou shalt set up, and it was set up.

"The mandatory multiple cycles of building and tearing down...powerfully hint at a crucial realization. Any human being will fail. He may fail many times. Each time he fails, without exception, he cannot lose faith or motivation. He must pick himself up and immediately try again. He may build his sanctuary, and then see it not only threatened or breached, but toppled completely. When that happens, he should not fall into depression or melancholy, but once again begin the process of building the next Tabernacle. Moses did this twice a day, morning and evening. ... The serial assemblings and dismantlings of the Tabernacle point as well to another important part of our spiritual work. We must be prepared to inspect the quality of what we have built, constantly reevaluating all details of its construction, looking for small flaws we may have been unaware of in the original construction. There is no end to the upgrading work we can do to make our personal Sanctuary even more effective."
וַיַּ֨רְא מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־כׇּל־הַמְּלָאכָ֗ה וְהִנֵּה֙ עָשׂ֣וּ אֹתָ֔הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה כֵּ֣ן עָשׂ֑וּ וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֹתָ֖ם מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {פ}

And when Moses saw that they had performed all the tasks—as יהוה had commanded, so they had done—Moses blessed them.

וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר (שמות לט, מג): וַיַּרְא משֶׁה אֶת כָּל הַמְּלָאכָה וגו' וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתָם משֶׁה, מַה בְּרָכָה אָמַר (תהלים צ, יז): וִיהִי נֹעַם ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ וגו', אָמַר לָהֶם תִּשְׁרֶה הַשְּׁכִינָה בְּמַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵיכֶם.

And when Moses saw that they had performed all the tasks—as ה' had commanded, so they had done—Moses blessed them. What blessing did he bless them with? May it be His will that the Shechinah should rest in the work of your hands. And may the pleasantness of the Lord our God be upon us... (Psalms 90:17), and he said to them "May God's presence dwell in the work of your hands"
