When King Yannai slew our rabbis, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Perahia and Jesus fled to Alexandria in Egypt. When peace was restored, Shimon ben Shetah sent this message to him: "From me, Jerusalem, the holy city - to you, Alexandria in Egypt. O my sister, my husband is dwelling in your midst and I am desolate." [Rabbi Yehoshua] arose and came back and lodged in a certain inn where they paid him great respect. He said: "How beautiful is this inn keeper. He [Jesus] said to him, "My master, their eyes are narrow!" "Wretched," he rebuked him, "Are those the thoughts that occupy you?!" He sent forth four hundred horns and excommunicated him. Later, the disciple [Jesus] came to him repeatedly, pleading, "Receive me," but he paid no heed. One day while Rabbi Yehoshua was reciting the Shema, he [Jesus] came before him. He intended to receive him and motioned to him with his hand, but the disciple [Jesus] thought he was rebuffing him again. So he went and set up a brick and worshiped it. Rabbi Yehoshua said to him, "Repent. But he answered him, "I have received this tradition from you" That he who sins and causes others to sin is deined the opportunity to repent."
תנו רבנן לעולם תהא שמאל דוחה וימין מקרבת...ולא כרבי יהושע בן פרחיה שדחפו ליש"ו בשתי ידים
The Sages taught: Always have the left hand drive sinners away and the right draw them near, so that the sinner will not totally despair of atonement. This is ...unlike Yehoshua ben Peraḥya, who pushed away Jesus the Nazarene with his two hands.

(ז) נִתַּאי הָאַרְבֵּלִי אוֹמֵר, הַרְחֵק מִשָּׁכֵן רָע, וְאַל תִּתְחַבֵּר לָרָשָׁע, וְאַל תִּתְיָאֵשׁ מִן הַפֻּרְעָנוּת:
(6) Yehoshua ben Perachiah and Nitai of Arbel received from them. Yehoshua ben Perachia says, "Make for yourself a mentor, acquire for yourself a friend and judge every person as meritorious."
(7) Nitai of Arbel says: "Distance [yourself] from a bad neighbor, do not befriend an evildoer and do not despair of punishment."
