The Camp of Israel During the Giving of the Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:15

All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the blare of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they fell back and stood at a distance.

ויעמדו מרחק. הָיוּ נִרְתָּעִין לַאֲחוֹרֵיהֶם שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר מִיל, כְּאֹרֶךְ מַחֲנֵיהֶם, וּמַלְאֲכֵי הַשָּׁרֵת בָּאִין וּמְסַיְּעִין אוֹתָן לְהַחֲזִירָם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (תהילים ס"ח) מַלְאֲכֵי צְבָאוֹת יִדֹּדוּן יִדֹּדוּן (שבת פ"ח):

Rashi on Exodus 20:15:5

ויעמדו מרחק AND THEY STOOD AFAR OFF — they moved back startled twelve miles, a distance equal to the length of their camp, and ministering angels came and assisted them — to bring them back, as it is said, (Psalms 68:13) “The angels of the God of Hosts made them move on, move on” (Shabbat 88b).

. וְאָמַר רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֶּן לֵוִי: כׇּל דִּיבּוּר וְדִיבּוּר שֶׁיָּצָא מִפִּי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא חָזְרוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַאֲחוֹרֵיהֶן שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר מִיל וְהָיוּ מַלְאֲכֵי הַשָּׁרֵת מְדַדִּין אוֹתָן, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״מַלְאֲכֵי צְבָאוֹת יִדֹּדוּן יִדֹּדוּן״ — אַל תִּיקְרֵי ״יִדֹּדוּן״, אֶלָּא ״יְדַדּוּן״.

Shabbat 88b:6

And Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: With each and every utterance that emerged from the mouth of the Holy One, Blessed be He, the Jewish people retreated in fear twelve mil, and the ministering angels walked them back toward the mountain, as it is stated: “The hosts of angels will scatter [yidodun]” (Psalms 68:13). Do not read the word as yidodun, meaning scattered; rather, read it as yedadun, they walked them.

12 Mil - this is the size of the camp, and those closest who fall backwards from fear to the edge of the camp.

Walk them back - helping them come closer slowly due to their weakness, like a mother helping her child when learning to way.

מכילתא דרבי ישמעאל, מַסֶּכְתָּא דְבַחֹדֶשׁ ט׳:ט׳-י׳

"ויעמדו מרחוק" – חוץ משנים עשר מיל. מגיד שהיו ישראל נרתעים לאחוריהם שנים עשר מיל, וחוזרין לפניהם שנים עשר מיל; הרי עשרים וארבעה מיל – על כל דיבור ודיבור. נמצאו מהלכים באותו היום מאתים וארבעים מיל. באותה שעה אמר הקב"ה למלאכי השרת: רדו וסייעו את אחיכם, שנאמר (תהלים סח יג) "מלכי צבאות ידודון ידודון": ידודון בהליכה וידודון בחזרה. ולא במלאכי השרת בלבד, אלא אף הקב"ה, שנא' (שיר השירים ב ו) "שמאלו תחת לראשי וימינו תחבקני". רבי יהודה ברבי אלעאי אומר: לפי שהיו משולהבין מחמה של מעלן, אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא לענני כבוד: הזילו טל חיים על בני, שנאמר (תהלים סח ט) "ארץ רעשה גם שמים נטפו מפני אלהים וגו'" ואומר (תהלים סח י) "גשם נדבות תניף אלהים". אימתי נעשה כל הכבוד הזה? בשעה שהיתה נאה שבאומות ומכבדת את התורה (תהלים סח יג) "ונות בית תחלק שלל" ואין שלל אלא תורה, שנא' (תהלים קיט קסב) "שש אנכי על אמרתך כמוצא שלל רב":

Mekhilta DeRabbi Yishmael, Tractate Bachodesh 9:9-10

(Ibid.) "And they stood from afar": outside of twelve mil (the distance of the Israelite encampment). We are hereby apprised that Israel receded twelve mil and returned twelve mil for each pronouncement. So that on that day they are found to have walked two hundred and forty mil. At that time the Holy One Blessed be He said to the ministering angels: Go down and help your brothers, as it is written (Psalms 68:13) "The kings of legions will move, will move" — they will move in going and they will move in returning. And not the ministering angels alone, but the Holy One Blessed be He Himself. As it is written (Song of Songs 2:6) "His left hand under my head, and His right hand will embrace me." R. b. R. Ilai says: Because they were scorched by the sun above them, the Holy One Blessed be He said to the clouds of glory: Drip the dew of life upon My children, etc. (Psalms, Ibid. 9) "The earth quaked. The heavens, too, dripped before G d. This is Sinai, etc.", and (Ibid. 11) "A bounteous rain did You drip, O G d." When was all this honor conferred? When Israel was the most comely of the nations and honored the Torah. As it is written (Ibid. 13) "And the beauteous of the house divides the spoil, "spoil" being nothing other than Torah, viz. (Ibid. 119:62) "I rejoice over Your word as one who finds great spoil."

ספרי דברים שי״ג:ט׳

יצרנו כאישון עינו - הולכים י"ב מיל וחוזרים י"ב מיל על כל דבור ודבור, ולא היו נרתעים לא מקול הקולות ולא מקול הלפידים.

Sifrei Devarim 313:9

They went forward twelve mil and recoiled ten mil at each commandment, and they were not deterred, neither by the sound of the (shofar) blasts, nor by the "sound" of the flashes.
