Introduction: In Parshas Bo, we witness the moment we have all been waiting for. After 9 "Makkot" and the death of the firstborn, the Jewish People are finally allowed to leave the land of Egypt in order to serve Hashem in the wilderness. This is a story we are very familiar, since we go over it at least twice a year, when we lein the Parshayot, as well as on Pesach. We tend to assume Pharaoh remains at the same level of stubborness throughout the time Moshe arrives and asks if the People can leave. This, however, may not be as accurate as we may assume. At this week's Mishmash we will take a look at how Pharaoh's feeling change over the course of time. Let's take a look....

(21) Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go and sacrifice to your God within the land.” (22) But Moses replied, “It would not be right to do this, for what we sacrifice to the LORD our God is untouchable to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice that which is untouchable to the Egyptians before their very eyes, will they not stone us! (23) So we must go a distance of three days into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He may command us.” (24) Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; but do not go very far. (24) Pharaoh then summoned Moses and said, “Go, worship the LORD! Only your flocks and your herds shall be left behind; even your children may go with you.” .......... (27) But the LORD stiffened Pharaoh’s heart and he would not agree to let them go. (28) Pharaoh said to him, “Be gone from me! Take care not to see me again, for the moment you look upon my face you shall die.”

Conclusion: We see from the sources above that Pharaoh slowly but surely inches towards letting the People go. After the Makkah of wild beasts, Pharaoh is ready to discuss the terms of the People's trip to the wilderness. Before the Makkah of Locust, Pharaoh wants to the let the men go serve, but not the children. After the darkness, Pharaoh lets them all go, but request that the animals remain behind. It is only after the Makkot Bechorot that Pharaoh is willing to them go without any conditions, well, at least for a little bit; but that's a story for next week.... ;-)
