Who Heard What at Sinai?

Who did God give the Torah to at Mount Sinai? Most people reply, "God gave the Torah to Moses."
And what were the Jewish people doing while Moses was receiving the Torah? "Worshipping the Golden Calf."
Correct answers – but NOT according to the Bible.
The above answers come from Cecil B. DeMille's classic film, "The Ten Commandments." Amazing the impact one movie can have on the Jewish education of generations of Jews. It's a great film, but DeMille should have read the original.
The version found in the Torah is quite different. The Torah's claim is that the entire people heard God speak at Mount Sinai, experiencing national revelation. God did not just appear to Moses in a private rendezvous; God appeared to everyone, some 3 million people. This claim is mentioned many times in the Torah...
e.g., Deut. 5:1-4: Moses called all of Israel and said to them: '...The Lord your God sealed a covenant with us at Horev [Mount Sinai]. Not with our forefathers did God seal this covenant, but with us ― we who are here, all of us alive today. Face to face did God speak with you on the mountain from amid the fire.'
The Torah claims that the entire Jewish nation heard God speak at Sinai, an assertion that has been accepted as part of their nation's history for over 3,000 years.

II. Moses as Mediator

In Exodus, who does God speak to? Moses? The people? Both?
What does Moses tell the people in Exodus 19:25?

Exodus 19:25-20:2

Option 1:

And Moses went down to the people and spoke to them. Then God spoke all these words, saying, "I the LORD am your God."

Option 2:

And Moses went down to the people and said to them, "God spoke all these words, saying, 'I the LORD am your God...'"

What are the implications of Moses hearing the commandments and relaying them, as opposed to the people directly hearing them?
III. God Spoke to Both the People and Moses

דרש רבי שמלאי שש מאות ושלש עשרה מצות נאמרו לו למשה שלש מאות וששים וחמש לאוין כמנין ימות החמה ומאתים וארבעים ושמונה עשה כנגד איבריו של אדם אמר רב המנונא מאי קרא (דברים לג, ד) תורה צוה לנו משה מורשה תורה בגימטריא שית מאה וחד סרי הוי אנכי ולא יהיה לך מפי הגבורה שמענום.

Rebbi Simlai expounded, Six hundred and thirteen commandments were told to Moses. Three hundred and sixty five prohibitions in accordance with the days of the sun. And two hundred and forty eight positive commandments in accordance with the limbs of a person.

Rav Hamnunya said what is the meaning of the verse (Deuteronomy 33,4) "Moses commanded us a law ("Torah"), an inheritance"? "Torah" has a numerical value of six hundred and eleven. "I am..." and "There should not be to you.." were heard directly from The Mighty.

Rabbi Yosef Qara (quoted by Yosef Bekhor Shor) on Exodus 20
R' Yosef Qara z''l explained that Scripture itself proves this, because the first two are spoken as if God in God's self was speaking to them [i.e. "I am the LORD"] But from the third and on, it's as if God speaks through a messenger ...[because God is referred to in the third person: "You shall not swear by the LORD's name in vain]
Why do you think the rabbis claim that the first two commandments are given directly by God? Why these commandments in particular?

I heard from the mouth of the great rebbe of Rumanov...who commented on the verse, "God said one thing, and I understood two" (Psalms 64:12) that it is possible that we heard directly from God's mouth only the aleph of the word anochi;

Why only the alef of the word anochi? [keep in mind what sound alef makes]

...Thus Judaism is based upon a minimum of revelation and a maximum of interpretation, upon the will of God and upon the understanding of Israel...There is a partnership of God and Israel in regard to both the world and the Torah: He created the earth and we till the soil; He gave us the text and we refine and complete it.
