The verse states: “And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel came to Shechem, to make him king” (I Kings 12:1).
It was taught in the name of Rabbi Yose:
Shechem is a place ordained for calamity.
- In Shechem, they tormented and raped Dinah,
- in the outskirts of Shechem the brothers sold Joseph,
- in Shechem the kingdom of the house of David was divided.
Shmuel asked Levi bar Sissi. He said to him:
What does the verse mean (Ber. 34:25): And they came upon the city with certainty, he said to him: they were certain about the power of that elder (Yaakov). And Yaakov our forefather did not want his sons to perform that act; however, since they did perform that act, he said: How can I allow my sons to fall into the hands of the nations of the world? What did he do? He took his sword and his bow and he stood at the entrance to Shechem, and he said: if the nations of the world come to marry them, I will fight them. This is what he said to Yosef (Bereishit 48:22): And I gave you an extra portion (Shechem) over your brothers etc. And where in the Torah do we find that Yaakov took up his sword and his bow in Shechem? It is written (Bereishit 48:22): "Which I took from the hand of the Emorites with my sword and my bow."
- Avimelech, of mixed descent, kills his 70 brothers and rules over the people of Shechem. See Shoftim chapter 9.
- Eser-hadon, king of Assyria, brings a mixed multitude to Shechem following the exile of the northern kingdom
(13) And his brothers went to pasture sheep (Gen. 37:12) - there are dots on the [direct object marker] ET. This teaches you that they did not go to pasture sheep, rather, it is to pasture themselves; in other words, to take care of their own interests.
