Wherefore Do They Say: "The Blind and the Lame Shall Not Enter This House": A Literary-Midrashic Reading

(ו) וַיֵּלֶךְ הַמֶּלֶךְ וַאֲנָשָׁיו יְרוּשָׁלַ‍ִם אֶל הַיְבֻסִי יוֹשֵׁב הָאָרֶץ וַיֹּאמֶר לְדָוִד לֵאמֹר לֹא תָבוֹא הֵנָּה כִּי אִם הֱסִירְךָ הַעִוְרִים וְהַפִּסְחִים לֵאמֹר לֹא יָבוֹא דָוִד הֵנָּה.

(ז) וַיִּלְכֹּד דָּוִד אֵת מְצֻדַת צִיּוֹן הִיא עִיר דָּוִד.

(ח) וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא כָּל מַכֵּה יְבֻסִי וְיִגַּע בַּצִּנּוֹר וְאֶת הַפִּסְחִים וְאֶת הַעִוְרִים שנאו [שְׂנֻאֵי] נֶפֶשׁ דָּוִד עַל כֵּן יֹאמְרוּ עִוֵּר וּפִסֵּחַ לֹא יָבוֹא אֶל הַבָּיִת.

(6) The king and his men set out for Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the region. David was told, "You will never get in here! Even the blind and the lame will turn you back." (They meant: David will never enter here.)

(7) But David captured the stronghold of Zion; it is now the City of David.

(8) On that occasion David said, "Those who attack the Jebusites shall reach the water channel and [strike down] the lame and the blind, who are hateful to David." That is why they say: "No one who is blind or lame may enter the House."

(ד) וַיֵּלֶךְ דָּוִיד וְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל יְרוּשָׁלַ‍ִם הִיא יְבוּס וְשָׁם הַיְבוּסִי יֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ.

(ה) וַיֹּאמְרוּ יֹשְׁבֵי יְבוּס לְדָוִיד לֹא תָבוֹא הֵנָּה וַיִּלְכֹּד דָּוִיד אֶת מְצֻדַת צִיּוֹן הִיא עִיר דָּוִיד.

(ו) וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד כָּל מַכֵּה יְבוּסִי בָּרִאשׁוֹנָה יִהְיֶה לְרֹאשׁ וּלְשָׂר וַיַּעַל בָּרִאשׁוֹנָה יוֹאָב בֶּן צְרוּיָה וַיְהִי לְרֹאשׁ.

(ז) וַיֵּשֶׁב דָּוִיד בַּמְצָד עַל כֵּן קָרְאוּ לוֹ עִיר דָּוִיד.

(4) David and all Israel set out for Jerusalem, that is Jebus, where the Jebusite inhabitants of the land lived.

(5) David was told by the inhabitants of Jebus, "You will never get in here!" But David captured the stronghold of Zionl it is now the City of David.

(6) David said, "Whoever attacks the Jebusites first will be the chief officer"; Joab son of Zeruiah attacked first, and became the chief.

(7) David occupied the stronghold; therefore it was renamed the City of David.

אל היבוסי - מצודת ציון נקראת יבוס,

ומזרעו של אבימלך היו, והיו להם שני צלמים, אחד עור ואחד פסח שנעשו על שם יצחק ויעקב.

ובפיהם השבועה שנשבע אברהם לאבימלך. ולכך לא הורישום כשלכדו את ירושלים

לא לכדו את המצודה כמו שנאמר, ואת היבוסי יושב ירושלים לא יכלו יושבי יהודה להורישם....

Rashi to II Samuel 5:6

"The stronghold of Zion is called Yevus, and they were of the seed of Avimelekh, and they had two idols, one blind and one lame, who were modeled after Yitzchak and Yaakov, and in their mouths the oath that Avraham took to Avimelekh. And for this reason they did not drive them out; when they captured Jerusalem they did not capture the stronghold, as it is stated: 'And as for the Yevusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Yehuda could not drive them out' (Yehoshua 15:63)...

ר' יהודה אומר שלשה אבות כרתו ברית עם עמי הארץ, ואלו הם אברהם יצחק ויעקב. אברהם כרת ברית עם עמי הארץ...

אמ' לבני יבוס לקנות מהם את מערת המכפלה במכר טוב בזהב ובכתב לאחוזת קבר עולם, וכי יבוסים היו והלא חתיים היו אלא עיר יבוס נקרא יבוסים, ולא קבלו האנשים עליהם, התחיל כורע ומשתחוה אליהם, שנ' וישתחו אברהם לפני עם הארץ.

אמרו אנו יודעים שעתיד הב"ה ליתן לך ולזרעך את כל הארצות האלה כרות עמנו שבועה שאין ישר' יורשים את עיר יבוס כי אם ברצונם, ואחר כך קנה את המכפלה במכר זהב ובכתב עולם לאחוזת עולם...

מה עשו אנשי יבוס עשו צלמי נחשת והעמידו אותם ברחוב העיר וכתבו עליהם שבועת אברהם, וכשבאו ישראל רץ להכנס בעיר היבוסי ולא היה יכול מפני ברית אברהם, שנ' ואת היבוסי יושבי ירושלם לא הורישו בני ישראל, וכשמלך דוד בקש להכנס לעיר היבוסי ולא הניחו אותו, שנ' ויאמר לדוד לא תבא הנה וכו'

והיו ישראל כחול הים אלא בכח השבועה וברית אברהם, ראה דוד וחזר לאחוריו, שנ' וישב דוד במצודה וכו', ואין אתה יכול ליכנס בעיר היבוסי עד שהתיר כל הצלמים הללו שכתוב עליהם שבועת אות ברית אברהם, שנ' כי אם הסירך העורים והפסחים, לא היו נכנסים במקדש חס ושלום, אלא אלו הצלמים שעינים להם ולא יראו רגל להם ולא יהלכו. שנ' שנואי נפש דוד שהיה דוד שונא לשמוע ולראות ע"ז שנ' על כן יאמרו עור ופסח.

Pirkei de-Rebbi Eliezer ch. 35

Rabbi Jehudah said : Three forefathers made covenants with the people of the land. (With reference to) Abraham (the circumstances were as follows)....

He spoke to the sons of Jebus, in order to purchase from them the Cave of Machpelah by a purchase with gold, and by a perpetual deed for a possession of a burying-place. Were they Jebusites? Were they not Hittites? But they were called Jebusites according to the name of the city of Jebus. The men did not accept (this request).- He began to bow down and prostrate himself unto them, as it is said, " And Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land."

They said to him: We know that the Holy One, blessed be He, will give to thee and to thy seed in the future all these lands ; make a covenant with us by an oath that thy seed shall not take possession of the cities of Jebus, and we will sell unto thee the Cave of Machpelah by a purchase with gold and by a perpetual deed and for a perpetual possession...

What did the men of Jebus do? They made images of copper, and set them up in the street of the city, and wrote upon them the covenant of the oath of Abraham, When the Israelites came to the land (of Canaan), they wished to enter the city of the Jebusites," but they were not able (to enter), because of the sign of the covenant of Abraham's oath,'- as it is said, " And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem" (Judg. i. 21). When David reigned he desired to enter the city of the Jebusites, they did not allow him, as it is said, "...Thou shalt not come in hither" (2 Sam. v. 6).

(Although) the Israelites were like the sand of the sea, yet it was owing to the force of the sign of the covenant of Abraham's oath.'' David saw (this) and turned backwards, as it is said, " And David dwelt in the stronghold " {ibid. 9). They said to him : Thou wilt not be able to enter the city of the Jebusites until thou hast removed all those images upon which the sign of the covenant of Abraham's oath is written, as it is said, "Except thou take away the blind and the lame." Lest thou shouldst say. The blind and the lame did not enter the Sanctuary, Heaven forbid (that we should say this), but these " blind and lame " refer to the images which have eyes and see not, feet and they walk not, (as it is said)," "That are hated of David's soul " (ibid.). Because David hated to hear of and to see idolatry, as it is said, " Wherefore they say, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house."

Babylonian Talmud Tr. Sotah 9b-10a

And he shall begin to save Israel. R. Hama b. Hanina said: The oath of Abimelech became void, as it is written: That thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son. ...

R. Johanan also said: Balaam was lame in one leg, as it is said: And he went shefi; Samson was lame in both legs, as it is said: An adder in the path.

Our Rabbis have taught: Five were created after the likeness of Him Who is above, and all of them incurred punishment on account of [the feature which distinguished] them: Samson in his strength, Saul in his neck, Absalom in his hair, Zedekiah in his eyes, and Asa in his feet. ‘Samson [was punished] in his strength’, as it is written: And his strength went from him. ‘Saul [was punished] in his neck’, as it is written: Saul took his sword and fell upon it. ‘Absalom [was punished] in his hair’, as we shall have occasion to explain later. Zedekiah [was punished] in his eyes, as it is written: They put out the eyes of Zedekiah. Asa [was punished] in his feet, as it is written: But in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.

(ד) וְלִיהוֹנָתָן בֶּן שָׁאוּל בֵּן נְכֵה רַגְלָיִם בֶּן חָמֵשׁ שָׁנִים הָיָה בְּבֹא שְׁמֻעַת שָׁאוּל וִיהוֹנָתָן מִיִּזְרְעֶאל וַתִּשָּׂאֵהוּ אֹמַנְתּוֹ וַתָּנֹס וַיְהִי בְּחָפְזָהּ לָנוּס וַיִּפֹּל וַיִּפָּסֵחַ וּשְׁמוֹ מְפִיבֹשֶׁת.

(4) Now Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled; and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

(יא) וַיֹּאמֶר צִיבָא אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר יְצַוֶּה אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת עַבְדּוֹ כֵּן יַעֲשֶׂה עַבְדֶּךָ וּמְפִיבֹשֶׁת אֹכֵל עַל שֻׁלְחָנִי כְּאַחַד מִבְּנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ.

(יב) וְלִמְפִיבֹשֶׁת בֵּן קָטָן וּשְׁמוֹ מִיכָא וְכֹל מוֹשַׁב בֵּית צִיבָא עֲבָדִים לִמְפִיבֹשֶׁת.

(11) Then said Ziba unto the king: ‘According to all that my lord the king commandeth his servant, so shall thy servant do; but Mephibosheth eateth at my table as one of the king’s sons.’

(12) Now Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.

(יט) וּמִן הָעִיר לָקַח סָרִיס אֶחָד אֲ‍שֶׁר הוּא פָקִיד עַל אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה וַחֲמִשָּׁה אֲנָשִׁים מֵרֹאֵי פְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר נִמְצְאוּ בָעִיר וְאֵת הַסֹּפֵר שַׂר הַצָּבָא הַמַּצְבִּא אֶת עַם הָאָרֶץ וְשִׁשִּׁים אִישׁ מֵעַם הָאָרֶץ הַנִּמְצְאִים בָּעִיר.(כ) וַיִּקַּח אֹתָם נְבוּזַרְאֲדָן רַב טַבָּחִים וַיֹּלֶךְ אֹתָם עַל מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל רִבְלָתָה. (כז) וַיְהִי בִשְׁלֹשִׁים וָשֶׁבַע שָׁנָה לְגָלוּת יְהוֹיָכִין מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה בִּשְׁנֵים עָשָׂר חֹדֶשׁ בְּעֶשְׂרִים וְשִׁבְעָה לַחֹדֶשׁ נָשָׂא אֱוִיל מְרֹדַךְ מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל בִּשְׁנַת מָלְכוֹ אֶת רֹאשׁ יְהוֹיָכִין מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה מִבֵּית כֶּלֶא. (כח) וַיְדַבֵּר אִתּוֹ טֹבוֹת וַיִּתֵּן אֶת כִּסְאוֹ מֵעַל כִּסֵּא הַמְּלָכִים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ בְּבָבֶל. (כט) וְשִׁנָּא אֵת בִּגְדֵי כִלְאוֹ וְאָכַל לֶחֶם תָּמִיד לְפָנָיו כָּל יְמֵי חַיָּיו. (ל) וַאֲרֻחָתוֹ אֲרֻחַת תָּמִיד נִתְּנָה לּוֹ מֵאֵת הַמֶּלֶךְ דְּבַר יוֹם בְּיוֹמוֹ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיָּו.

(1) And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and encamped against it; and they built forts against it round about. (2) So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah....

(6) Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment upon him. (7) And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him in fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

(8) Now in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem. (9) And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every great man’s house, burnt he with fire. (10) And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, broke down the walls of Jerusalem round about...

(13) And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases and the brazen sea that were in the house of the LORD, did the Chaldeans break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon. (14) And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the pans, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away. (15) And the fire-pans, and the basins, that which was of gold, in gold, and that which was of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away. (16) The two pillars, the one sea, and the bases, which Solomon had made for the house of the LORD; the brass of all these vessels was without weight.

(18) And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door; (19) and out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war; and five men of them that saw the king’s face, who were found in the city; and the scribe of the captain of the host, who mustered the people of the land; and threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the city. (20) And Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah. (21) And the king of Babylon smote them, and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away captive out of his land...

(27) And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison. (28) And he spoke kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon. (29) And he changed his prison garments, and did eat bread before him continually all the days of his life. (30) And for his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him of the king, every day a portion, all the days of his life.
