לעתיד לבא באין שרי אומות העולם ומקטרכין על ישראל לפני הקב"ה ואומרים לפניו:
רבונו של עולם, מה נשתנו ישראל משאר אומות -
אלו עובדי ע"ז ואלו עובדי ע"ז,
אלו שופכי דמים ואלו שופכי דמים,
אלו מגלי עריות ואלו מגלי עריות,
הללו יורדין לגהינם והללו אין יורדין?
אמר להם הקב"ה: אם כן תרד
כל אומה ואומה ואלהיה עמה לגהינם ותבדוק את עצמה,
וגם ישראל ילכו ויבדקו את עצמם.
משיבים ישראל ואומרים לפני הקב"ה:
אתה הוא סיכויינו ואתה סברנו,
אין לנו מובטח אלא אתה.
אם רצונך עבור אתה בראשינו.
ואומר להם הקב"ה: אל תיראו...
אני אלך עמכם...
ר' ראובן בשם ר' חנינא אמר:
אלמלא מקרא כתוב אי אפשר לאמרו, כִּ֤י בָאֵשׁ֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה נִשְׁפָּ֔ט
שופט אין כתיב כאן אלא נשפט.
In the future the ruler of all the nations of the world will come and will accuse Israel before God saying,
Master of the universe—how is Israel different from the rest of the nations?
The nations are idol‐worshippers
and so are they.
They are killers and they are killers.
They commit sexual crimes and so do they. [But] they [the nations] will descend to hell and these will not descend!
God shall say to them—if so then every nation shall descend and their gods will descend with them and inspect itself,
so too will Israel go and inspect themselves. Israel will respond and say before God,
You are our Guarantor, if this is your will then pass before us.
God will say to them: Do not fear…I will go with you…
R. Reuben in the name R. Chanina said,
‘If the text had not been written, it could not be said —
‘for in the fire of God it shall be judged’ (Isa 66:16).
‘Judge’ is not written here but rather the ‘judged'.
