(24) When Nahor had lived 29 years, he begot Terah. (25) After the birth of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and begot sons and daughters. (26) When Terah had lived 70 years, he begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. (27) Now this is the line of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot. (28) Haran died in the lifetime of his father Terah, in his native land, Ur of the Chaldeans. (29) Abram and Nahor took to themselves wives, the name of Abram’s wife being Sarai and that of Nahor’s wife Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. (30) Now Sarai was barren, she had no child. (31) Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and they set out together from Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of Canaan; but when they had come as far as Haran, they settled there. (32) The days of Terah came to 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.
COMMENTARY BY RABBI ELIOT MALOMET

What kind of information do we get about Abraham?
NAHOR is 29 years old when he fathers Terah.
Terah is 70 years old when he fathers Abram.
Verse 26. Abram is introduced to us as part of a family of three brothers: Abram, Nahor, Haran.
Verse 27. Haran has a son, Lot.
Verse 28. Haran dies “in the lifetime of his father Terah” lit. “upon the face of Terah his father.” No other information is given about him.
The death was prior to the migration: “in the land of his birthplace, in Ur Kasdim.”
Verse 29. Presumably, Haran also had a wife because Haran’s son, Lot is born to him; his wife is not named.
Abram and Nahor take wives:
Nahor’s wife is Milkah.
Milkah is the daughter of Haran.
Thus: Nahor marries his niece.
Who is Sarai?
Sarai is not identified here. Some will identify her as Yiska. But later in the Torah (Chapter 20:12) she is identified as Abraham’s half-sister:
And besides she is in truth my sister, my father’s daughter though not my mother’s.
So Abraham married Terah’s daughter from another woman.
Verse 30. Sarai is barren.
Verse 31. It is Terah who proceeds to leave Ur Kasdim with his family.
Terah is the 10th in line from Noah.
Just as Noah had three sons, (Shem, Ham, and Yafet) who populated the world – Shem – Mesopotamia/Arabia, Ham-Africa/Canaan, Yafet-Southern Europe/Asia, Terah seems to have ambition of populating the region of what is now Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. See Google map. But they do not go all the way to Canaan; they settle in Haran which is “situated 550 miles NW of Ur, about 10 miles N of present-day Syrian-Turkish border on the left bank of the Balikh River.
