When God began to create heaven and earth—
Bi-rey-sheet ba-rah e-lo-hei-nu et ha-sha-ma-yim v'et ha-aretz
the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water—
v'ha-aretz ha-yi-tah to-hu va-vo-hu v'cho-shek al p'ney ta-hom v'ruach e-lo-hei-nu mi-ra-che-fet al p'ney ha-ma-yim
God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
vay-omer e-lo-him yi-hee or vay-hi or
God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.
vay-rah e-lo-him et ha-or ki tov va-yav-del e-lo-him bein ha-or oo-bein ha-ho-sheq
וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ לָאוֹר֙ י֔וֹם וְלַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ קָ֣רָא לָ֑יְלָה וַֽיְהִי־עֶ֥רֶב וַֽיְהִי־בֹ֖קֶר י֥וֹם אֶחָֽד׃ {פ}
God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, a first day.
va-yiq-rah e-lo-him la-or yom v'la-cho-sheq qa-rah lay-lah vay-hi e-rev vay-hi bo-quer yom e-chad
