Food for Our Souls: Parashat HaShavua in Our Lives - Vol. 2, Episode 2 Noach, Genesis 6:9 - 11:32

(5) Now YHVH saw that great was humankind's evildoing on earth and every form of their heart's planning was only evil all the day. (6) And YHVH regretted that YHVH had made humankind on earth, and YHVH's heart was pained.(7) YHVH said, “I will blot out from the earth the human whom I have created from the face of the soil—human together with beasts, creeping things, and birds of the sky; for I regret that I made them.”(8) But Noah found favor in the eyes of YHVH.

(14) Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make it an ark with compartments, and cover it inside and out with pitch.(15) This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.(16) Make an opening/window/skylight for daylight/iridescent precious stone in the ark, and terminate it within a cubit of the top.Put the entrance to the ark in its side; make it with bottom, second, and third decks.

(1) God remembered/paid mind to Noah and all living things, all the animals that were with him in the ark, and God caused a wind to blow across the earth, and the waters subsided.(2) The wellsprings of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were stopped up, and the rain from the sky was held back;(3) the waters returned from upon the earth, continually advancing and returning. At the end of one hundred and fifty days the waters diminished,

(6) At the end of forty days, Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made(7) and sent out the raven; it went off, going off and returning, until the waters were dried up from upon the earth.(8) Then he sent out the dove to see whether the waters had decreased from the face of the soil.(9) But the dove could not find a resting place for the sole of her foot, and returned to him to the ark, for there was water upon the face of all the earth. So putting out his hand, he took her and brought her to him into the ark.(10) He waited another seven days, and again sent out the dove from the ark.(11) The dove came back to him toward evening, and here - a freshly plucked olive leaf in her beak! So Noah knew that the waters had subsided from upon the earth.(12) He waited still another seven days and sent the dove forth; and it did not return to him any more.

(1) God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: Bear fruit and be many and fill the earth!(2) The fear and the dread of you shall be upon all the wildlife of the earth and upon all the birds of the sky—everything with which crawls on the soil—and upon all that swims in the sea; they are given into your hand.(3) All things crawling about that live, for you shall they be, for eating, as with the green plants, I give you all these.(4) You must not, however, eat flesh with its life-blood in it.(5) But for your own life-blood I will require a reckoning: I will require it of every beast; of man, too, will I require a satisfaction for human life, of every human for that of their sibling!(6) Whoever now sheds human blood, for that human shall their blood be shed, for in God's image God made humankind.(7) As for you - bear fruit and be many, swarm on earth and become many on it!

(8) And God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying:(9) As for me - hineini/here, I am about to establish my covenant with you and with your seed after you,(10) and with every living thing that is with you—birds, cattle, and every wildlife on the earth as well—all that have come out of the ark, every living thing on earth.(11) I will establish My covenant with you: never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”(12) God further said, “This is the sign that I set for the covenant between Me and you, and every living creature with you, for all ages to come.

(13) I have set My bow in the clouds, and it shall serve as a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.(14) When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds,(15) I will remember My covenant between Me and you and every living creature among all flesh, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.(16) When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures, all flesh that is on earth.(17) God said to Noah: This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between Me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

(1) Now all the earth was of one language and one set of words.(2) And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.(3) They said, each human to their neighbor: Come now! Let us bake bricks and let us burn them well burnt! So for them brick stone was like building stone, and raw bitumen was for them like red mortar. (4) Now they said: Come now! Let us build ourselves a city and a tower, its top in the heavens, and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of all the earth!(5) But YHVH came down to look over the city and the tower that the humans were building.(6) YHVH said: Here, they are one people with one language for them all, and this is merely the first of their doings - now there will be no barrier for them in all that they scheme to do!(7) Come now! Let us go down and there let us baffle their language, so that no man will understand the language of his neighbor. (8) So YHVH scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they had to stop building the city.(9) Therefore its name was called Bavel/Babble, for there YHVH baffled the language of all the earth-folk, and from there, YHVH scattered them over the face of all the earth.
