Save "The Man, Moses

Let's look at Moses again, in more detail. He's an interesting character.

(7) And God said, “I have seen the suffering of My people who are in Egypt and their outcry because of its taskmasters. I have heard and I know the pain. (8) And I have come down to rescue them from Egypt and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. (9) And look, the cry of the Israelites has come to Me and I have also seen the ways the Egyptians oppress them. (10) And now, go, that I may send you to Pharaoh and bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt.” (11) And Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the Israelites from Egypt?” (12) And God said, “For I will be with you; And this is your sign that I Myself have sent you. When you bring the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain.”(13) And Moses said to God, “Look, when I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?,’ what shall I say to them?” (14) And God said to Moses, “Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh, I Will Be Who I Will Be." And God said, “Thus shall you say to the Israelites, ‘Ehyeh sent me to you.’”

(10) And Moses said to the LORD, “Please, my Lord, I am not a man of words, not in any time in the past nor now since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am heavy in the mouth and heavy in the tongue.” (11) And God said to him, “Who gave a man a mouth, or who makes him mute or deaf or sighted or blind? Is it not I, God? (12) And now go, and I will be with your mouth and will instruct you what to say.” (13) And he said, “Please, my Lord, send the hand of someone else.”

(24) And Pharaoh called for Moses and said, “Go, worship God! Only your sheep and your cattle will stay here. Your little ones may go with you, also.” (25) And Moses said, “You yourself will provide us with sacrifices and burnt offerings so that we may offer them to our God. (26) And our livestock, too, shall go with us, not a hoof will stay here. For from it we shall worship our God and we won't know what to worship God with until we get there.” (27) And God hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he did not want to let them go. (28) And Pharaoh said to him, “Go away from me! Watch yourself. Do not again see my face, for on the day you seen my face again, you shall die.” (29) And Moses said, “You are correct-- I will not see your face again!”

(1) And God said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague upon Pharaoh and upon Egypt. After that he will send you out from here. when he lets you all go, he will surely drive you out from here. (2) Tell all of the people that every man borrow from his fellow man and every woman from her fellow woman, objects of silver and objects of gold. (3) And God will treat the Israelites well in the eyes of Egyptians." The man Moses, too, was very respected in the land of Egypt in the eyes of Pharaoh's servants and in the eyes of the Egyptians.

(7) And God said to Moses, “Quick, go down, for your people that you brought out of the land of Egypt have acted destructively. (8) They have quickly turned away from the laws that I charged them. They have made themselves a molten calf and bowed low to it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’” (9) And God said to Moses, “I see this people and look, this is a stiff-necked people. (10) And now, leave Me be, that My anger may flare against them and I will put an end to them and I will make you a great nation.” (11) And Moses implored God and said, “Why, O God, should your anger flare up against Your people that You brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and a strong hand? (12) Why should the Egyptians say, 'For evil He brought them out, to kill them in the mountains, to put an end to them on the face of the earth? Turn back from Your flaring anger and cease the evil against Your people. (13) Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom You swore by Yourself and said to them 'I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I said, I will give to your offspring, and they will live in it forever.” (14) And God stopped the evil He had spoken to do to His people.

(15) And Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Covenant in his hand written on both of their sides, on the one side and the other they had writing. (16) And the tablets, they were God’s doing, and the writing was God’s writing, inscribed upon the tablets. (17) And Joshua heard the sound of the people as they shouted, and he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war in the camp.” (18) And Moses said,

“Not the sound of crying out in triumph,
and not the sound of crying out in defeat;
It is the sound of crying out in song that I hear!”

(19) And it happened when Moses came near the camp that he saw the calf and the dancing, and Moses became angry; and he flung the tablets from his hands and smashed them at the foot of the mountain. (20) And he took the calf that they had made and burned it in fire and ground it to powder and scattered it over the water and made the Israelites drink it.

(1) And Miriam, and Aaron with her, spoke against Moses about of the Cushite wife he had married, for he had a Cushite wife. (2) And they said, “Is it only through Moses that God has spoken? Has God not spoken through us too?” And God heard it. (3) Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any person on the face of the earth. (4) And the LORD said suddenly to Moses and to Aaron and to Miriam, “Go, the three of you, to the Tent of Meeting.” And the three of them went out. (5) And God came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the Tent, and called, “Aaron and Miriam!” And the two of them came forward. (6) And God said,

“Listen to My words

If there is a prophet of God

They would know me in a vision,

I speak with them in a dream.

(7) Not so with My servant Moses,

he is trusted in all My house.

(8) With him I speak mouth to mouth,

and vision and not in riddles,

and he sees the likeness of God.

And why do you not fear

to speak against My servant Moses?”

(9) And God's anger flared against them, and God went off. (10) And the cloud moved off from over the Tent, and look, her skin was white as snowflakes. And when Aaron turned to Miriam, and look, she was stricken with white flakes. (11) And Aaron said to Moses, “Please, my lord, do not put upon us the crime which we did foolishly and offended with. (12) Please, let her not be like one dead with half their flesh eaten away.” (13) And Moses cried out to God, saying, “God, please heal her, please!” (14) And God said to Moses, “Had her father spat in her face, would she not be shamed for seven days, be shut up seven days outside the camp, and afterward she would be brought back in?” (15) And Miriam was shut outside of camp seven days, and the people did not journey onward until Miriam was brought back in. (16) And afterwards the people journeyed on from Hazeroth and they encamped in the wilderness of Paran.

(1) And the Israelites, the whole community, came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed at Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there.

(2) And the community had no water, and they assembled against Moses and Aaron. (3) And the people argued with Moses, and they said, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before God! (4) And why did you bring God's assembly to this wilderness for us and our beasts to die here? (5) And why did you take us out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place, a place with no grain or figs or vines or pomegranates and no water to drink!” (6) And Moses, and Aaron with him, came away from the assembly to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and bowed their faces to the ground, and God's glory appeared to them. (7) And God spoke to Moses, saying, (8) “Take the staff and assemble the community, you and Aaron, and you shall speak to the rock before their eyes and it will give water from it, and you shall bring forth water for them from the rock and give water to the people and its beasts.” (9) And Moses took the staff from before God as God had commanded. (10) And Moses and Aaron assembled the community in front of the rock, and he said to them, “Listen, please, rebels, shall we bring forth water for you from this rock?” (11) And Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod and a great amount of water came out, and the community and its beasts drank. (12) And the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron, “Because you did not trust Me to sanctify Me before the eyes of the Israelites, you shall not bring this assembly to the land that I have given to them” (13) These are the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites argued with God and God was sanctified through them.

(1) And the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gileah son of Machir son of Manasseh of the clans of Manasseh, son of Joseph, came forward and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah and Noa and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah. (2) And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the chieftains and all of the community at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and said, (3) “Our father died in the wilderness and he was not part of the community that banded together against God with Korach, but died for his own offense and he had no sons. (4) Why should our father's name be withdrawn from the midst of the community because he had no son? Give us a holding among our father’s brothers!” (5) And Moses brought their case before God. (6) And God said to Moses, (7) “The daughters of Zelophehad speak rightly. You shall surely give them a secure holding among their father’s brothers and you shall pass on their father’s estate to them."

(1) And Moses went up from the steppes of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which faces Jericho. And God let him see the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan (2) and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and the whole land of Judah as far as the Hinder Sea, (3) and the Negeb, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, town of palm trees, as far as Zoar. (4) And God said to him, “This is the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying ‘I will assign it to your family.’ I have let you see with your own eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” (5) And Moses, God's servant, died there in the land of Moab by the word of God. (6) And he was buried in the glen in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; and no one has known his burial place to this day. (7) And Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eye had not grown weary and his strength had not weakened. (8) And the Israelites mourned Moses in the steppes of Moab for thirty days and the days of wailing in mourning for Moses came to an end. (9) And Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands upon him, and the Israelites heeded him and did as God had commanded Moses. (10) But no prophet arose again in Israel like Moses, whom God knew face to face, (11) with all the signs and the visions which God sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, (12) and with all the strong hand and with all the great fear that Moses did before the eyes of all of Israel.
