(1) God said to Abram, “Go from your land and your father’s home to the land that I will show you. (2) And I will make you a great nation and I will bless you and make your name great and you shall be a blessing. (3) I will bless those who bless you and I will curse those who curse you and all the families of the earth shall be blessed because of you.” (4) And Abram went forth as God has spoken to him, and Lot went forth with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.
(17) And God had thought, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? (18) Abraham will surely be a great and mighty nation and all the nations of the earth are to bless themselves because of him (19) For I have adopted him so that he may teach his children and his family to keep the way of God by doing what is just and right, so that God may give to Abraham what He had promised.” (20) And God said,
“The evil of Sodom and Gomorrah! How great!
Their sin very grave!
(21) Let me go down to see if they are destructive according to the evil that I have found, and if not, I will know.” (22) And the men turned from there and went to Sodom while God was still standing before Abraham. (23) And Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really wipe out the innocent with the guilty? (24) What if there are fifty innocent within the city? Will You really wipe out the place and not spare it for the sake of the innocent fifty who are in it? (25) Far be it from You to do such a thing, to put to death the innocent with the guilty, making innocent and guilty the same. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?” (26) And God said, “If I find fifty innocent within Sodom, I will forgive the whole place for their sake.” (27) And Abraham spoke up and said, “Here I am trying to speak with my Lord when I am nothing but dust and ashes. (28) What if the fifty innocent lacked five? Would You destroy the whole city for the five?” And He answered, “I will not destroy if I find forty-five there.” (29) And he spoke to God still again and said, “Maybe there will be 40 there.” And God said, “I will not do it on account of the forty.” (30) And he said, “Please, do not let my Lord be angry and let me continue: there might be only thirty.” And God answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” (31) And he said, “Here I am going to continue to try to speak to my Lord. There might only be 20. And God answered, “I will not destroy for the sake of the twenty.” (32) And he said, “Let not my Lord be angry and let me speak this last time: Maybe there will be 10.” And God answered, “I will not destroy for the sake of the ten.” (33) And God left when God finished speaking to Abraham and Abraham returned home.
(1) And it happened after these things that God tested Abraham. And God said to him, “Abraham,” and he answered, “Here I am.” (2) And God said, “Take, please, your son, your only one, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him up as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will say to you.” (3) And Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey and took his two servants with him, and his son Isaac, and he split the wood for the offering, and rose, and went to the place that God had said to him. (4) On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from afar. (5) And Abraham said to his servants, “Sit here with the donkey and let me and the boy walk ahead and let us worship and return to you.” (6) And Abraham took the wood for the offering and put it on his son Isaac and he took in his hand the fire and the knife, and the two walked off together. (7) And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Here is the fire and the wood but where is the sheep for the offering?” (8) And Abraham said, “God will see to the sheep for the offering, my son.” And the two of them went together. (9) And they came to the place that God had said to him and Abraham built an altar there and laid out the wood and bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. (10) And Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to offer his son. (11) And an angel of God called out to him from the heavens and said “Abraham! Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” (12) And he said, “Do not reach out your hand against the boy, and do nothing to him, for now I know that you fear God and you have not held back your son, your only one, from Me.” (13) And Abraham raised his eyes and saw and look, a ram was caught in the thicket by its horns, and Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
(1) And Moses was herding the sheep of his father-in-law, Jethro, priest of Midian, and he shepherded the flock into the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. (2) And God's messenger appeared to him in a flaming fire from the middle of a bush and he saw, and look, the bush was burning with fire and the bush was not consumed. (3) And Moses thought, “Let me, please, turn for a moment so I may see this great sight, why the bush does not burn up.” (4) And God saw that he had turned for a moment to look and God called to him from the middle of the bush: “Moses! Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” (5) And God said, “Come no closer. Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place you are standing on is holy ground." (6) And God said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
[And God said] (10) "Now, go, that I may send you to Pharaoh and bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt.” (11) And Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the Israelites from Egypt?” (12) And God said, “For I will be with you; And this is your sign that I Myself have sent you. When you bring the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain.”
(10) And Moses said to the LORD, “Please, my Lord, I am not a man of words, not in any time in the past nor now since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am heavy in the mouth and heavy in the tongue.” (11) And God said to him, “Who gave a man a mouth, or who makes him mute or deaf or sighted or blind? Is it not I, God? (12) And now go, and I will be with your mouth and will instruct you what to say.”
(7) And God said to Moses, “Quick, go down, for your people that you brought out of the land of Egypt have acted destructively. (8) They have quickly turned away from the laws that I charged them. They have made themselves a molten calf and bowed low to it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’” (9) And God said to Moses, “I see this people and look, this is a stiff-necked people. (10) And now, leave Me be, that My anger may flare against them and I will put an end to them and I will make you a great nation.” (11) And Moses implored God and said, “Why, O God, should your anger flare up against Your people that You brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and a strong hand? (12) Why should the Egyptians say, 'For evil He brought them out, to kill them in the mountains, to put an end to them on the face of the earth? Turn back from Your flaring anger and cease the evil against Your people. (13) Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom You swore by Yourself and said to them 'I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I said, I will give to your offspring, and they will live in it forever.” (14) And God stopped the evil He had spoken to do to His people.
