(32) And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: ‘The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. (33) And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.’
This part of the text comes in the book Numbers. In this part of the book, the Jewish people left Egypt and before they enter Canaan G-D tells Moses to send scouts/spies to the land of Canaan, and, after being 40 days in the land spying/scouting, they come back with a report that while the land was "flowing with milk and honey" which means was rich with amazing stuff, the spies/scouts also explain that the people that occupy the land of Canaan at that time were called Nephilim, giants, and the spies/scouts tell the Jewish people that "we were like grasshoppers in our eyes, and so we were in their eyes." This pshat is very important for the Jewish history, and the Jewish people because this is a part when some Jews lost faith when they should have not, and it turned on them. There is plenty to learn from this pshat.
Etz Hayim:
"We were like grasshoppers in our eyes." 13:33
Conveys the essence of the failure of the scouts. The problem was that the Israelites did not believe in themselves. They had no way of knowing what the inhabitants of the Land thought of them. Because the Israelites saw themselves as "grasshoppers," weak and ineffectual, they assumed that others saw them the same way.

This Midrash is very meaningful because it explains what happened in the past and how in today times it also harms us, it shows that the past problems that happened Torah stories, harms us today too, but in different moments, It adds the deeper meaning of how Torah is very important to study and learn from today.
This Midrash was taken from Etz Hayim, Etz Hayim is a Chumash commentary book used by the conservative Jewish movement and has modern Hebrew English translation of the Torah with a number of commentaries in it too.

The Verse "We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so were in their sight" of the Numbers book really made me think by myself about how I compete in the game of basketball. When I play competitive basketball I sometimes face kids that might be my age but look way older, strong kids that are 6"10 and above, and compared to them I am physically not as big as them, but I will not back down, I might assume that they may be thinking that since they are bigger then I am, they are better, but that is not true, because I do not really know what they think, and I should not care either, because I need to have trust in myself that I am capable to face them and win, and thanks to this verse from Torah, I think more positively that I can win, because if I will assume that I cant beat them, nothing good will come out of that, but if I will tell myself that mentally I am stronger and I can beat whoever I will face, good stuff could happen and I could play better basketball without being frightened of no one.
Another way I can connect this verse into my life is when I am getting tested, because sometimes the goal of me succeeding in a specific test might look extremely hard and even impossible for various reasons, but that does not mean I need to give up, it means the opposite, because this verse made me believe that nothing is too hard for me to handle, and if I have a great challenge in front of me, people may assume that it is almost impossible to achieve it, but I will not let myself give up before I tried like most of the Jewish people did.
